I have a competition for saturday at my local games workshop. Here are the rules.
You are limited to the contents of one battleforce and one blister/box for your HQ
Can only use pieces as they are (i.e. no declaring them something they aren't)
No named/special characters allowed.
Doesn't have to be painted but you earn more points if they are.
The army can not exceed 750 points but otherwise you may kit your troops out with whatever options are available to them.
Standard Force Org. Chart (1 HQ, 2 TROOPS)
My issue is, I will be using the Imperial Guard battleforce box that I just bought. I have been staring at the codex and realize now that I can not possibly make a 750 point army with a company command squad, 20 models, 3 hwt, and a sentinel. So am I going to be steamrolled just because my battleforce has less points in it than lets say the Space Marine or Ork battleforce that both have easily 500+ point armies out of the box? Is there something I am missing?
CCS
Powersord and plasma pistol
Lascannon (1 hwt)
medi-pack
vox-caster
Veterans
Autcannon (1 hwt)
Vox-caster
Grenadiers
Another veterans kitted out the same.
Sentinel
Lascannon
Total Points - 405
Basically I can add a bunch of flamers in there, that would be 30 more points. Add camo-netting and smoke launchers on the sentinel. 15 more points. Even if I took every possible upgrade across all 4 of my units I don't think I can reach 750. Not to mention that it is a terrible, TERRIBLE, list to begin with and I see myself getting stomped anyway. I basically need more bodies and would like to run 2 infantry platoons instead of veterans, but the rules don't allow it. Should I just forget about this competition and wait for something more for me? I am a beginner and want to try this but I don't see myself having fun.
I am asking you guys to see if you can make something that is playable out of the battleforce box. Remember i can get something for the HQ but it is basically a CCS, Lord Comissar or a Primaris Psyker. I guess another question I have is can a 500 point army beat a 750 point army or at this low points is it going to be total destruction.

1st: Don't list individual points costs. Just put in the overall cost for the unit. This keeps GW off Dakka's back.
2nd: Imperial Guard get a lot of models, but because of their relatively low points cost, there isn't a really good way to make use of only the Battleforce in a 750 point game. Any upgrades you give to your guys will be unnecessary. You might be better off with a different battleforce.

you could buy a blister of plasma guns and really ruin peoples days with that CCS,
also personally i would rather use an autocannon on the sentinel, just given that with 750 points you probably wont be running into anything really tough to
It might also be worth giving the veterans grenade launchers

I don't have my IG codex on me at the moment, but I would put the HW squads in together and have them as a support squad for the HQ. That way you get 2 more bodies in each of your vet squads for "free". I would keep them as AC's, as with the points/kits you will be playing against, there is nothing heavily armoured, and AC's will take out both light and heavy infantry, and the light vehicles you might expect. Same for the sentinel, put on the AC (you can magnetize it or just push it in place if you want to swap it later/for different battles). As mentioned, buy a set of plasma weapons for your HQ as your blister - they are very powerful weapons that many players probably will not expect. Check the codex to ensure that you can do this stuff though - as I say, I don't have mine with me and I have never played with the new IG codex.

The command squad boxes have some extra weapons that you shoud be able to spread around. Also thats is the old battleforce , I beleive the new one comes with a chimera. Which is even better at low points.

Thanks for the info. I bought the battleforce for my current IG army and don't have the funds to go and buy another battleforce just for a tournament with 50 bucks as the prize.
Link me where there is a battleforce kit with a chimera... the only ones I see on the GW site are the cadian and catachan ones that both have sentinels.
I plan to magnetize the weapons so I can swap them. Plasma weapons would be interesting with the armor save and the feel no pain save.
Thanks for all the responses. I might just go with a 400 point army but the manager offered for me to use the store gray knight army and I might just do that. I really need to get my IG army up to par so I can actually start battling with it.

The OLD one came with a tank(it was a Russ, not a Chimera) instead of a Sentinel and Command squad. How's your modelling?
I'd look at kitbashing what you get in the box to make up 5 HW teams, rather than 3.
That way you can give your vets a HW each and still take a HW squad (I'd recommend ML for your vets, possibly with a GL - its rubbish but you don't have a lot to work with and the higher BS of vets mitigates your problems a bit - then take 3x Autocannon for your HWS)
For your purchase, get a Chimera for your CCS - give multilaser/hull HB/pintle HS for the 9x shots at 36"
The CCS I'd be tempted to give 4x flamers to. I know its a waste of their higher BS but it gives you a great counter-assault unit or possibly even an objective grabbing unit if you run them in your Chimera up to where you need to be. Maybe swap one of the flamers for a PG/ MG in case you run into something tough.
Sorry I can't be more help but its a tough ask from that box 'o' bits

Chimera is a good choice for the CCS. I liked your idea of kit bashing the HWS but the codex doesn't let you take an HWS without it belonging to a platoon. I am going to play around with this a bit longer. Definetely adding a chimera, doesn't break the rules at all.

Well I would assume the battle force to beat is Necrons (believe it or not ) :
750 Pts - Necrons Roster
1 Lord @ 160 pts ((C:N, pg. 16); Unit Type: Infantry; Necrons; Staff of Light; Resurrection Orb; Solar Pulse)
10 Warriors @ 180 pts ((C:N, pg. 18); Unit Type: Infantry; Necrons; Reserves; Gauss Flayer)
10 Warriors @ 180 pts ((C:N, pg. 18); Unit Type: Infantry; Necrons; Reserves; Gauss Flayer)
3 Destroyers @ 150 pts ((C:N, pg. 19); Unit Type: Jetbikes; Necrons; Gauss Cannon)
5 Scarab Swarms @ 80 pts ((C:N, pg. 19); Unit Type: Jetbikes; Deep Strike; Fearless; Small Targets; Swarms; Vulnerable to Blasts/Templates; Disruption Field)
Total Roster Cost: 750
So I would start gearing my choice to deal with them.
