What do the fina dakka dakka people think, bout the usefull ness of stormboys. ive been wanting to make some. and is wondering what the best way to use them is. in mo opinion without Zagstrukk they seem pointless. and i was wondering what the optimal squad size is as they do deepstike andthey run risk of dying due to carious special effect. So im asking what is the bset wya to use them or if they are useful in a competitive list.

Strom(Thurmond)boyz? They're zoggin Dixiecrats!

In general, they're suboptimal. You need as much anti-vehicle capacity in an Ork list as you can get. Deffkoptas and Warbuggies provide this. Stormboyz don't.

NO, not Strom Thurman. Stromboyz are the orks who make Stromboli for the rest of the boyz. Mmm.....

Do they use fungus-pasta and stuff it up with Eatin'Squigs from finely diced remnants of the Stormboyz who die to having to charge out in the open without the protection of a transport or Kustom Forcefield?

i think they are o.k. and if you want a squad of orks that might move 18" before charging or might move 13" and kill an ork. if you want them a squad of 10 or more are needed just incase of the dead ork problem and getting shot. give the nob a PK and then you have a squad that might get that annoying tank in the back shooting your guys. the big word here is MIGHT. you have to take risks with them just to move more than 6" some are ok with this, others not so much. just depends on how much it helps the list or if you like them.

While suboptimal I find them fun.

I use them as a distraction unit.

i find them useful at assaulting units with fleet that try to flank you. last week i jumped a unit of 30 termagant b4 they shoot at stromboys killed like 14, they killed 4. thats to the NO RETREAT rule they lost an extra 10 need i go on.
i know the termagant are only 150pts each but and my stromboyz are 260pts but i only lost 5 boyz and they saved my lootas

all ur base are belong to da

Zagstruk is an upgrade of the squads nob, and cos he's the best upgrade to a squad of stormboyz they're no really worth taking without him.

I reckon the bigger the squad you can field the better, around 12 is a good number. They won't last forever. Space Marine assault troopers rarely do (unless they have chuck norris as a joined on independant character) and stormboyz only have a 6+ armour save!!

But their best bit is that Zag can strike in initiative order with his super cool foot power klaws of doom.

So if you want to peel open a tank he can do that, but if you would prefer to take out a few Space Marine Terminators, or other squads with power fists, then he's your ork!

I like the character of the chance of losing an ork every time you move, and the fact that they rarely survive is a good thing, but a distraction squad like that will put your opponent on the defensive, and that means you're in control of the game!

Just keep them away from rapid firing space marines - ouch.

If there was ever really a unit in 40K that could be called a glass cannonball, it would be the stormboyz. It will do tons of damage to whatever it hits, but it has to hit it's target, and if it gets punched before it can be 'fired' then bye-bye.

Keep them behind things, be cautious, and when you see a target, reach out and pounce on it! They can tear up units like heavy weapons teams and they do decently well against heavy tanks. (AV10 on the rear, and even if they moved 12" to avoid you, that means they aren't shooting you as much.)

I don't really like Zag, he's cool and all, and lets you assault after you deep strike, but there are other units in 40K that can do this, and the general consensus on them is 'they suck.' I mean, Zag has some other benefits, but if you scatter too far and are left without anything to assault, then your opponent will vaporize him. Zag+20 boyz is a very expensive unit, and it's not something that I'd like to see vaporize.

TBH, they arent competative in terms of an ork army since there are better units for the role.

However, they are fun to use and draw alot of 1st turn fire (if you start them on the board)
They move nice and quickly so your assured quick combat.
Zag helps out a fair bit, but shines against walkers (since he has a klaw at I order on the charge)
So theres a nice chance he can pop it before it starts crushing the boyz.

Failing that, they dont really have a use lol, i sometimes run 14 and zag, but its simply for fun.

It's a shame this thread has been posted now and not in about a month and a half's time, as I intend to use zaggy and 15 ladz in a tourney beginning of June.

I can see them being useful in a competitive setting if played with zagstruck.

ALWAYS take more than 10 strong mobz, as due to the casualties suffered on assaults + jetpack usage etc they still need to be large enough to do some damage in cc.

A good tactic would be to krump something in assault, then consolidate into cover to hide till next turn, then rinse and repeat!

If you read the codex review in the articles section, it's pretty much all about the stormies. It makes a good argument for the competitiveness of them.

I played a guy who used a small unit of five or six as an escort to his warboss on a bike. They soaked up wounds, and once the warboss got close he split off to cause havoc. You lose a little movement from the stormboyz, but its a cheaper 5 wound escort that can keep up with bike movement.

This is probably the most creative use I have seen for them.

I have dedicated myself to fielding the full 20 + Zag every time. Now granted I've only played one game withthem, was too conservative with placement, rolled 10 on deviation and ended up useless and dead to Blood Claws but that was pretty much worst case.

slightly sub-optimal can provide strong tactical advantage, especially if an opponent needs to account for an abnormal strategy.

And they look really cool

I like Stormboyz because they're very versatile, IMO.

Tank in the back-field? Stormboyz!

Warriors shooting your boyz? Stormboyz!

Squishy unit just on the other side of cover? Stormboyz!

That's actually a pretty brilliant idea! Short of that, I can't really justify using Stormboyz in a list - this is a mechanized world, and my fast attack choices are full of deffkoptas and warbuggies.
