This sort of desert?

or this sort?

or this sort?

Find a real life example or a model with basing that you like and show us a pics.
I'm sure that someone would be able to help with a bit more info.

Sorry about the potential necro but did you happen to find a good scheme?

I find washing it a very light desert yellow over a white basecoat gives good enough results but I find something is missing for rocks and such. When I have time I'll try drybushing desert yellow again and see if it's an improvement.

I do a desert theme for my bases:

etc.

The way I do it is to take some limestone (do a little looking) and crush it with a hammer. Once I'm totally done painting and sealing the model I smear some PVA (wood) glue on the bleached bone colored base and then sprinkle the little rocks on. Sometimes I superglue larger chunks of gravel on first. I always make some room to superglue some little bushes on.

Creates a nice arid, but not super-ludicrous-dry desert.

The way I do my desert bases.

1. Munge a bit of Milliput on it to give some relief.
2. Spray it sand colour.
3. Attach the model.
4. Paint PVA glue around the model.
5. Dip the base in ungraded beach sand containing a mixture of grain sizes and small rocks.
6. Allow to dry.
7. Tap off the excess.
8. Paint over with watered PVA to form a top layer.
9. Stick on a couple of tufts of vegetation (optional).

See these bases here. They don't have any veggie attached.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

This angry fellow was based with the modelling sand that came with a GW starter kit. I'd ask around your local hobby shop and see what they've got, there are a lot of desert modeling themed items usually. Some dry grass might be a nice addition too.

For these nobs I did way back when, I took Gale Force 9 fine basing grit and medium basing grit, then put some Gale Force 9 dead grass on top of it. If I were to do it again now I'd probably paint the grit instead of leaving it in those colors, but it came out pretty okay:

i personally dont like to pay for sand since theres so much of it lying around for free, which generally means i have to paint it to get it to look how i like.

i usually do a basecoat of snakebite leather then drybrush it with commando khaki and then lightly drybrush it with bleached bone.

Cheap and effective

1. Apply PVA glue (Elmer's Glue).
2. Dip in kitty litter. (CLEAN)
3. Spray entire mini with primer.
4. Paint the base Dark Shadow (Reaper Master Series Paint).
5. Dry brush the base Fair Shadow (Reaper Master Series paint)
6. Add sparce grass flocking.

Not sure how well this picture reflects the actual color, but it is similar to the first picture in the second post in this thread in real life.
