Another thread inspired me to get the models scanned in from my old 2nd edition rulebooks, as many people don't seem to have them anymore. One of the things I like the most from these old scenes is all the scratch-built scenery, some of which is really good and makes a nice change from the Basillica like new stuff.

Anyway, hope you enjoy, I'll get more up as I scan them.

Haha, Eldar Dreadnought.

Writing internet fiction is kind of like throwing out messages in bottles into a churning sea composed entirely of messages in bottles, the chances of of your message getting noticed and someone being sent out to rescue you is punishingly slim. But every once in a blue moon, someone who owns a big boat made of money finds your message and agrees to let you ride on his big boat made of money as long as you keep making messages for him.

Because Matt Ward didn't write our Codex. Otherwise we would have had Scything Tyrants with Scything Nidfists that can re-roll re-rolls and that can have a bodyguard of 10 Scything Guards and a Scything Prime that could ride in a Scything Pod. Or something to that effect.

Everywhere I'm not supposed to be.

I PDF'd the 2ed rulebook the other day to look through some of the pictures for some inspiration. I just absolutely love the terrain. Feels more "war-like" than the stuff GW produces nowadays. And I always get a chuckle out of how some of the models look...especially the Tyranid warriors lol

If you need me, I'll be busy wiping the layers of dust off my dice.

I have the 'Eavy Metal painting guide from about 1993, and it's loaded with some of these very pictures! I also have Codex Imperialis and the old 2nd ed starter set, and many a night have been spent browsing through the various books, looking at all the cool old stuff. My Crimson Fists army is all themed around RT/2nd ed era stuff, and I hope someday to find somebody else willing to play 2nd ed and try it with me.

That brings back ALOT of childhood memories. The first time I was introduced to 40k, my brother got into it during 2nd, so I remember ALOT of those things. Thanks for sharing all those pics. And I got a good laugh at how Thraka used to look. Kindda weedy from what he is now eh?

One of the best bits is in this pic

The bastion isn't scratchbuilt OR made by GW.

It is an old Ziterdes Bastion (now retired and replaced with a newer model). It was used in a couple of IG codices and a few WD battle reports.

I remember (when I used to game in a GW store) when some of the noobs used to ask the staff where they could get it from (and whether they sold it). The staff were torn between "not plugging another manufacturer's product" and the truth.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

It takes forever to play it, best start with small armies (it's very complicated). You have to have the wargear codex so that you can work out the modifiers, and the vehicle datasheets to work out what battle damage the tank has taken.
If you want even more complication, try finding a copy of the Dark Millenium suppliment.

I do miss the custom terrain era of GW.

It has a certain charm that this era of the newer plastic kits( which while fun to build and equally accessible to all)lack...

We have traded creativity for convenience, which I understand, but I do miss the old era.

it used to be very exciting to get a new WD/Codex and see what awesome custom terrain had been whipped up to use in the latest batrep and to rack one's brain trying to figure out how they made it, or how to replicate it. Now we just buy a kit and snap it together in a few minutes...

In particular these ruin pieces are beautiful examples of classic 40K/GW terrain that are artistic, detailed, evocative of the setting:

I assume/hope GW has some of these classic terrain pieces preserved at WH WORLD, etc.?

I agree, back then the WD was worth something and they actually showed you how to build stuff using things everyone had. Now if you do see a tutorial for somethings its covered in "now use the GW brand saw and cut the GW brand paper, and glue the GW brand paper with GW brand glue. Assemble it all together on the GW brand table"
You get the point. Its annoying to say the least.
