Hello there, world's slowest painter Niilo Timantti here!

I'm now finally starting my project blog, something I meant to do as soon as I joined Dakka but life got in the way, in the form of moving to a smaller apartment and getting engaged with my long time girlfriend. Anyone interested in how I got into the hobby and why I claim to be the world's slowest painter can read about it in here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/281917.page

But enough about all that, let's get started!

I've a few AOBR-boxes worth of orks lying around, unassembled. I don't want to field 60+ models of sluggaboys and had been thinking about converting them into shootaboyz (well, some of 'em anyway) with the contents of a battleforce set I got on sale at Fantasiapelit. I'm not using the boyz torsos from the battleforce set 'cause the torsos in there seem pretty identical to those in the lootas/burnas sprue, so I'm thinking of using those to get 5 burnas out of a lootas/burnas box in addition to the 5 lootas. Why the heck did they put just 5 torsos in there, anyway? Oh yeah, greed

Anyway, today I decided to see if it would look silly if I removed the ccw arm of a AOBR sluggaboy and gave him a shoota instead.

I removed the ccw hand with a wannabe Dremel tool I got at Biltema, then smoothed things a bit with a hobby knife and a file. Then proceeded to Blu Tack this bugger together to see what he looks like:

Looks enough like a standard shootaboy to me, still need to remove the mould lines, drill out the shoota's barrel and GS him a bit but anyway..

What do you guys/gals think?

If you've got the tools handy (which you obviously do) it's a nice easy fix. Looks good so far, I say go for it!

The odd shoulderpad here and there can help hide any problem spots, too.

A nice way to make those AoBR boyz useful. Good luck on the blog!

Thanks for the idea. I need more shootas in my army and I have a few AOBR models lying around, I will try that.

Thanks for the encouraging words!

I just started stripping 9 boyz of their hands, don't want to mix a batch of GS just for one ork.

Oh yeah and thanks Teek, I didn't even think of hiding uneven surfaces under a shoulderpad, I'll have to try that out since I accidentally cut too deep into one of the boys.

Ook!

I'm back! I got stuck in a timewarp earlier this week as a few games that the missus bought off an internet auction dropped through the mail slot... When did Tekken 2 become vintage anyway?

Nevermind that, just ranting and making up excuses as to why there's been no updates

So I finally got around to GS'ing my shootaboyz together today, huzzah! Got a few pics here:

Okay, two pics, and only because I didn't manage to get one shot where some of 'em weren't blurred, but what the hey. And it seems I still have to file these guys a bit, you all know why. The GS work is what it is but that's the best I can do right now with my skills, I haven't used GS that much yet. Well, at least I got some training

So in addition to filing the mould lines tomorrow, I plan on assembling a nob and a boy with a rokkit launcha so I can field these gu... Doggone! I just realized that I'm 1 ork short, was supposed to build 10 of these so I'd have at least a unit of 12 for the next game. Ok, so I got to assemble 1 shootaboy along with the nob and the rl-equipped one, not a big deal.

I'm not going to prime these buggers yet, I've got a bunch of sluggaboyz that I want to paint before anything else gets from the "assemble-me-and-prime-me" -stage into the "really-I've-been-waiting-for-ages-and-ages-for-you-to-pick-the-paintbrush-up-and-start-working-you-slow-yoof" -stage. Also I will maybe add some bitz before I prime 'em.

I'll try posting something tomorrow, hopefully a waiting-to-be-primed squad of shootaboyz!

Until then: You stay classy, San Diego. I'm Ron Burgundy?

Hi all!

Or judging from the number of replies, hi no one

Just a quick update and then I'm off to bed, way past my bedtime for a change...

Managed to assemble 1 shootaboy & the one with the rokkit launcher, got pretty far with the nob before got engulfed by the sofa and Miyazaki's Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.

Here are the boys:

I used the shoulderpad with the shootaboy to hide some nastiness like Teek suggested, thanks again!

And here's the nob, blu tacked (with a little more blu tack than was actually needed):

I chopped a hand off an AOBR nob's choppa arm and replaced it with the power klaw from the basic boys sprue, the nob that comes with the boys sprue is a little too weedy for my taste. I'll probably cut off the hair, I'm not a big fan of those orky samurai hairdos. Oh yeah and he's also getting a boss pole.

Any comments and/or suggestions are welcome!

- Niilo

P.S. Is the 40k basing kit any good? I've read a few reviews but not sure if it's worth the dough (17,50 euros in Finland).

Hi all!

I've been painting a bunch of sluggaboys the past days and I've pretty much worked out all the colors I want to use for straps, guns etc., but there's something I'd like you fellow Dakkaites to help me with:

Some boys have a helmet that has this fur lining going around it and I'm not sure what color I should paint it, I've actually been putting off painting these 'cause I can't make up my mind.

My orks 'clan colours' are red and black, but I'm thinking I don't want to make it red. I've thought about making it grey or brown but those seem kinda obvious. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing. Anyway, what do you guys think?

I've pictured the one with the helmet here with two finished ones so you'll have an idea of what I'm going for.

Comments and suggestions really, really welcome!

On a side note: hope this post made some sense, my hay fever's acting up and my brain's stopped functioning. Now where the did I put the recipe for my allergy medicine....?

This blog is false advertising. If you WERE the slowest painter in the world then I would have expected at least one full year of occassional updates before painting!

The orks are off to a great start though, I'm particularly fond of the black-red checkered look, it's quite appealing (reminds me of a checker board), and the skin tone is a perfect olive green that I think best fits for orks. Keep punching away at those boyz!

The boys are coming along nicely, you're off to a great start!

One bit of advice I'll throw out there: you might find it easier to file off mold lines before you assemble, easier to get at those "hard to reach spots" before they become "really really ridiculously hard to reach spots".

As for the helmet issue, I'd recommend using a single strong contrast color throughout the army for small details. The nob with the bionik eye has his power cable picked out in a light blue-ish shade. Make that a recurring contrast color on some of your small details, and it will really help tie the army together.

For a really good example of what I'm talking about, check out Develain's Thousand Sons thread. First and foremost his army is beautiful, but he also uses red as an unexpected and yet perfect small detail color. The result is a visually striking, yet beautiful and coherent force. The same idea might work well for your orks.

Good work so far, keep it up!

If you want a little bit more realistic contrast...I usually go for a quick Catachan Brown base on the fur with either a Badab Blkack or devlan wash...then a quick highlight of Catachan brown again...Simple.

I ain't dead yet!

Just a quickie, this. I'm currently painting the shootaboys from earlier. I'm having problems with the GW paint Graveyard Earth which I use to paint the straps and belts on the boys, problem being the lousy coverage this paint gives. I find myself having to paint 3-4 layers to get a good coverage. Any suggestions? Tried using Khemri Brown which is quite similar (almost the same, most would say) but it has a slightly red/orange hue and just didn't feel right. Also I'm using Khemri Brown to paint the holsters and bags on the belts and I want them to be a bit different from the belts.

Hi all!

I'm spending my short vacation at my mum's in my little hometown of Kuusankoski, thought I'd assemble a box of Stormboyz while I'm here where there's less distractions

Well, remembered to take the stormboyz, some files and a leatherman tool with me. Forgot to bring glue, craft knife and the bases for the boys

Few days later, I've managed to get a hold of a craft knife and glue, I could only find bags and bags of slottabases at the local stores that sell gw-merch and deciced to just assemble the boys and glue them on their bases when I get back home. I start working and in a few minutes I succeed in cutting my right thumb with the brand new craft knife, then cutting the left thumb while inspecting the damage done to the right one while still holding the craft knife, d'oh!

Ok, that's enough blabbering about me being a total moron at times, I actually had something I meant to ask from the more seasoned warbosses roaming the Dakka-plains:

There isn't an actual looks-like-a-powerklaw on the stormboy-sprue for the nob, right? I'm assuming the slightly larger front of a torso is supposed to be the nob. Would you count the choppa that connects to the rokkit-pack via the hose (shown on the left in that pic) as a PK or would you swap the hands altogether and get something like the PK from the basic boyz sprue?

I'd go with an actual klaw mate as the stormz box does not have one :(
For mine i just used a spare one from the nobz box.

On a related note, you best off buying a box or 2 of nobz, simply for parts.
Being an ork player you will forever be looking for something not included in a kit, and the nobz box includes pretty much everything you will need.

@۞ Jack ۞: Just checked the Nobz sprues in the Dakka Articles, I see what you mean, those are literally packed with bitz! Thanks for pointing this out! I've actually thought of buying a box for sometime but have been putting it off 'cause I don't need a lot of nobz in my current list, if only I'd known..

.

On another note, managed to assemble 2 boyz and the nob with mangled thumbs before going off to movieland with the missus (Godfather trilogy FTW! ). Left the arms off the nob though, will have to rummage through my bitz box for an actual PK when I get back home. The controller-like choppa and slugga from my previous post went to a regular boy. I didn't glue the rokkit packs and heads on just yet, I'll probably paint 'em first to make things a bit easier. Will definately have to get a box of Nobz like ۞ Jack ۞ suggested, whether I find a PK or not..!

Oh, and here's pic
I Blu-Tacked the rokkit packs and heads and stuck these guys on some slottabases that came in a blister I bought yesterday, just to see what they look like:

And now I'm off to bed, should've been sleeping something like 2 hours ago

All i did was buy 2 box's, that way i could use them as nobz in any unit i make later on.
The extra parts also help alot.

Failing that, if you have basic skills with plasticard they are simple enough to make.
Simply build a box that covers the arm up to the elbow.
Add in a middle section to hold the blades.
Add in blades and then you have a rough base to work on.

Simply add in wires and other small details as you go along.

Or snatch up cheap AoBR warbosses like i did for the klawz to start with (usually get them at £2 or so each)

Failing that, bitz sites will help to no end with any convertions you intend to do.

I second the plasticard suggestion; I've made a few myself and it's real easy.

I did a conversion on my stormboy nob to have a power klaw using the nobz box, I can post pics tomorrow if you want.

You've used the right bits so far, got the body and arms correct.

Thanks for your suggestions everyone!

CommanderKhaine, I've seen your DIY-PK's in your Squeaky Waaagh! blog, they're awesome! Sadly my skills with plasticard aren't anywhere near as good as yours, in fact I haven't even tried working with plasticard yet, ever. Will have to try it eventually though, it doesn't seem like the world's hardest medium to work with. Could probably use the leftover choppablades from my shootaboy conversions for the actual klaw-bitz of the klaws with just some minor cutting..?

Leigen_Zero: If you would be willing to post a pic of your stormie nob I'd gladly take a look at it! I'm a little worried about using the PK-arms from the Nobz box, they seem a bit bulky to be used in conjunction with the nob torso that comes in the stormboyz box..? (Which I feel is kind of the same size as the nob torso in the normal boyz box)

.

Now for the compulsory "lookie-what-I-done-did-today!" -part of the blog:

Assembled this guy, I like the way he looks kinda clumsy and goofy with his arms all spread out like he's making a not-so-smooth landing
His head, the rokkit pack and the slugga on his back are just Blu-Tacked on for easier painting like yesterday.

I won't get a chance to work on the boyz till sometime next week, going off to a friend's cabin tomorrow for the last days of this rather short vacation.
At least I did what I set out to do during this week away from home, which was to get a box of stormboys assembled. Okay, so I assembled four stormboys, but that's just because I already assembled one before leaving home, I wasn't just being a slow-poke, see!

Yodle-ee-E-e-E-ee-E-ee-ee-EE! (Or whatever it is that Tarzan screams while swinging into the scene on a vine, also known as a liana )

Got back home on sunday evening, yesterday went while performing work related stuff. Today I had a little time of my own and put it to good use. I glued the bases on my new stormboyz, went to town to pick up a box of nobz (thanks again, Jack ), and did a little rummaging around for the arms of the stormie nob. Ended up using the PK from a regular boyz box and a slugga arm from the nobz box. I put a little GS between the arms and the torso 'cause I felt they were a bit too close to the body and this way he looks a bit bulkier, what do you think?

Okay, not the best photo, grots face is in focus but the nobs isn't, dang.

Looking at the whole mob, I think I got to glue something heavy into the bottom of the bases, all the boyz are kinda top heavy and will probably tip over quite easily, despite the fact that I tried to glue them as close to the back end of the bases as possible...

But that's something I'll do sometime later, now I got to get some sleep, night all!
