I think this belongs here, not in modelling and painting... but anyway.
What does everyone use on their wargaming tables to make grass/whatever other texture they use? For grass, do you just use grass mats (like this or this), or do you just use tons of pva glue and flock, or...
I'm looking at making a table now, and can't decide how to make it interesting, besides just painting it a certain colour, so any opinions/examples would be great. Thanks.
Flock + PVA glue - lots of it. Water down the PVA glue, paint onto the board a section at a time and then sprinkle the flock over it. Give it a few minutes to try and then knock the excess off.
I always play at my FLGS, and they use grass mates because then you can remove them, roll them up and use the table for something else. That seems to be the best choice in my opinion. Flock, no matter how well done requires constant maintenance.

Not if you spray the entire flocked area with scenic cement (basically extremly watered down PVA). Basically just brush on the PVA, flock then let it dry overnight. The next day spray the whole thing down with the scenic cement, the stuff dries clear but really holds whatever flock you used on.
warpcrafter has made a good point, there is also the fact that when flock wears off it will get all over the place. So if you have a strict overseer (Mrs or mum) it could cause a few headaches.
Allot of the "grass" play mats also have the same issue.
Whatever happened to a sheet spread over some books?

Painted boards.
Terrain itself is modular and gets placed on the table as needed and where it fits.
My current table is 3x sheets of 4'x2' 12mdf.
Painted with a 'modular' city streets layout (mainly grey with black roads) that enter and exit via the same points on any of the three boards and allows some variation in layout.
My club has one 'flocked' board made from an old GW paper-backed grass mat that was glued down in a hurry. As a result, it has bubbles and ridges and is also shedding green fur.
I flock terrain and bases. I don't flock tables anymore.
I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.
That is not dead which can eternal lie ...
... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.
If the table is going to be stationary then I would use static grass and flock. As long as nothing is moved to much then there shouldn't be excessive loss of turf.
If you want a cheap way out and are just using a flat table surface then a roll up gaming mat or a dark green sheet does just as well. I personally have a dark green sheet (grass) and a tan sheet (desert) that I use and they work well enough.
I use carpet tiles.
Not the good quality ones (looped pile), but the cheap nylon ones found in small offices.
Wire brushed to straighten the pile, and sometimes dyed or painted
If you want to use flock, make your own using sawdust and paint

Its hard to be awesome, when your playing with little plastic men. Welcome to Fantasy 40k
If you think your important, in the great scheme of things. Do the water test.
Put your hands in a bucket of warm water,
then pull them out fast. The size of the hole shows how important you are.
I think we should roll some dice, to see if we should roll some dice, To decide if all this dice rolling is good for the game.
Too many ideas, I can't decide now! I'm kind of leaning towards flock, because that video made it seem fairly cheap + easy, and the sealant might make it last longer, but I'll have a look around and see if I can find any cheap carpet tiles or grass mats too, before I decide. And I don't think I have the heart to skin a teddy bear If worst comes to worst, I'l just paint it grey and make it cityscape.
Thanks for the help though guys, if it turns out well I might show it off
Bavis, I used the grass you showed in the first post (second picture) combined with [b]chromedog's[/s] "My current table is 3x sheets of 4'x2' 12mdf."
It works great for me. I can put the boards away when I'm done. I have modular hills that I can use, along with some trees I made from a rail-road model kit.
Game Mat. I have one of the old 6x4 GW ones (and the best IMO) as well as a others from Hotz Mats and Monday Knight Productions. No room for a permanent table, and always nice to be able to your stuff with you to play on the road.
