Hey people of Dakka! I'm soon getting a game set and I'm still deciding what game set I should ask for. If there are any game experts out there who wouldn't mind telling me what games and game sets are awesome please post a reply because I'm still a total n00b about game stuff, the close I got to were PC games. Thank you for your time

If was going to throw out a guess I'd say Persona 3 and/or 4 if you've a PS2 or PSP.

Getting a console that someone else in your friends/family network already has is usually a good starting hoice. The reason I say this that you can then purchase games that the other doesn't have an share them with each other. The other reason is if you both like the same game and its a multiplayer game you can play it together on the same system or online depending on what the game supports and you will most likely have an even better time playing that particular game. I'll highlight some of the benefits of each console as you sound like you are completely in the dark here.

Wii:
- Lots of party games, family games, and kid titles.
- Least powerful system, as such games tend to be smaller, less detailed and worse game play than a copy of the same game on another system.
- Current motion controls can wear on the average/noob game player, preventing some from playing their favorite game for extended periods of time.
- Clunky online play compared to the other systems.
- Lots of Nintendo branded exclusives and some backwards compatibility with the game cube system. Allowing you to play some of the older gamecube games which you could pick up for cheap second hand. Check online for confirmation that the game is backwards compatible on the Wii first though. I don't own a wii so I can't help here.

Xbox 360:
- Large collection of games (AAA, Arcade and indie games)
- Currently no motion controls (a system is in the works for the fall however, but I wouldn't expect much from it.)
- You have to pay about $60 a year (depending on country) to play online.
- Some of the biggest exclusives are on this platform.
- Console ahs a 66% fail rate. (Red Ring od Death) But can be replaced for free if you contact microsoft and follow the right steps, it just takes 4-6 weeks.

PS3:
- Was the most expensive of the three major consoles this generation and a latter release, as such it sold the least amount but has since recovered.
- Free online gaming for supported titles.
- Decent amount of games and some nice exclusives.
- Blueray player functionality.

There are other things for each console but thats the major ones that spring to mind. As I said its better to pick up a console that others you know already own. It will allow you to try more things out and have someone to talk to and socilize about your gaming adventures.

Note: D+ can take over 12 hours of driving in Canada. It's no small task here.

GENERATION 5: The first time you see this, copy and paste it into your sig and add 1 to the number after generation. Consider it a social experiment.

I recommend the 360 despite the red ring of death, it has IMO the best controller.

Seconded. The RROD does NOT have a 66% chance of occuring. It's caused by the console overheating, which can be avoided if you've got half a brain. Don't leave it on for more than five hours at a time, have it in a well-ventilated space, and make sure it's not too hot in the room, as it will accumulate heat faster.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

I've had my 360 for several years and it has only ever turned red twice, once when my wife dropped it on the floor (It started working again after I had pleaded with the gods through ), and once when I was keeping it in a really small space and it overheated. I moved it onto the table and it was fine.

Personally, I would go with whatever your friends have - if they all have a PS3, get one of those, if they all have a 360, get a 360. Playing online with your friends is a great thing.

However, I am still a 360 man, and have a lot of people on my friends list who I've never met but I play games with fairly regularly. It has more of the sorts of games I like to play as well, which is another major bonus. Plus I much prefer the controller - the PS controllers have always made my hands hurt.

Mine's never RRoD'd. I've had mine for years. I sits vertically between my TV and my PS2, but there's plenty of room between the back of the console and the nearest wall, so plenty of space to keep from overheating.

Cheese, I don't know where you get this don't keep it on for over 5 hours thing from(must be an older version of the system problem). I leave mine running all night regularly(8-9+ hours) and never have had a problem with it.

If it's any concern, I have the LE Halo 3 green 360.

I'd say Xbox 360.

Best controller.
Best game library (IMO)
Xbox Live is worth those 5 bucks a month.

I've got the same one, and I've never had any trouble either. I've not used a PS3 myself, but I definitely recommend the 360.

I would say it all depends on what games you want:

Wii: Party games, motion control games, and kid friendly games.

Xbox: Shooters, shooters, shooters, and..... Adventure games. Pretty good graphics, and I beleive most of the games that go on a PC are made with 360 versions, too.

PS3: Damn fine graphics, best out there. Has pretty much everything, but (IMHO) the controller is worse than the Xbox for shooters, though Sports games (which, if you ask me, you should play the actual sport instead of a video game on it....) and racing games are better here than the 360.

I own a 360, and I really have no complaints with it, other than I am on my third one....

I think I'd vote for the Xbox aswell.

Pros
-It has the largest selection of games available.
-It's cheap.

Cons
-Red Ring of Death (I've never had it yet in about a year and a half *touch wood* and microsoft have this covered, I believe, so if you do get it, it's not a disaster)
-Controller looks like an infant's toy.

Live costs money and PSN is free, but having both systems I can tell you that you get what you pay for. Live is much more functional than PSN and much prettier.

That could change though as Sony is going to be announcing their Premium PSN account at e3 as well as the PSP2.

We know that it will be shown, but other than that we don't know:

What it looks like
What it's features are
What kind of games will be on it

I own a Wii, DSi and a PS3. My wife and kids play the Wii, as I rarely ever play it. The games are fun and all, but if your more of a hardcore gamer type, meaning you need more then just a flashy thing to play with, the Wii will get boring fast. I think it only has few games that are worth saying they are awesome. But if your into those kind of games youll love it. My wife isnt really a gamer, but she LOVES playing it.

The DSi has its cool points, the DSi points you can buy is pretty neat, and some of the downloadable games are actually really cool. And the game library is pretty damn big and has alot of fun games to play. Specially if your an RPG fan.

The PS3 is more for hardcore types. The games I have played on it, Ive enjoyed immensely. And knowing that I dont HAVE to pay to play online is a huge perk for me.

Ive owned an xbox before when they first came out. Mine RRODed all the time. Ive heard that they have improved on that problem alot, but I know people and have heard from alot of people that they still poop out after a year or so on average.
