So last week I was in the FLGS and I was told that they're soon going to begin an 1850 league. Here I just spent all this effort just to get to 1500, and now I need to go a little further! With all due haste, I immediately set out to figuring out how to add 350 points to my army in just a week or two. As I already have another priest laying around, the most obvious answer to begin with is to spend 130 points on another superblob. Other than hacking some power weapons into the hands of my sergeants, this basically meant that I'd need another commissar.

And so I got to work. The problem that I was faced with right away was that I was down to just one torso, and only two choices of legs (don't ask me how I got the extra legs). This meant that I had to make my second commissar in basically the same posture as the first, or use the other legs. The problem with the other set of legs is that I've already used them on a lot of sergeants and officers, at least a couple of which are also pointing and shouting. As such, I was faced with the problem of how to make the model sufficiently lead-from-the-rear-commissary while also looking different. After some hacking, I came up with this result:

Everything here is from the regular cadian box set, except for the right arm and left hand (cadian heavy weapon team) and the bolt pistol (new chimera sprue). Honestly, I wasn't really all that impressed when I got to this point, but I didn't know what else I could do, so I decided to go with it. At least it has a strong "the front is THAT way, soldier!" look.

After this, I went about the process of GSing. I did the coat slightly differently this time. Instead of just doing the top, and then the two bottom parts, I put down two long strips of GS for the front of the coat, and then built everything back into it. I'm not sure if the result is better, but it definitely made it a little less futzy.

I'm not certain I like this model better, as the vision and the execution are slightly poorer, I think (it took me much longer for me to get close to satisfaction while GSing). The one thing that I have definitely gained is more comfort with this level of GSing. This model took me about four days from the above assembled step all the way through painting, which beats the pants off of my previous week and a half to two weeks for my last commissar.

Anyways, once I got it painted up, it looked sufficiently commissar-y.

One of the things that I think is missing from these pictures is just how tall this guy is. Unbending his legs from the typical crouch position makes his dimensions stretch out quite a bit. Not only does he look much taller, but he IS much taller. Note that the guy on the left was made with the same legs as the commissar, and the commissar looks nearly a head taller.

Given his size and badassery, I'm thinking of calling him "Ajax". In closing, here is a propaganda poster for you:

I'm definitely a fan - the moustache makes him look like Joseph Stalin. I think that alone makes me like him even better than your last commissar, which was also a well done mini.

Your jackets get better and better. I can only suggest some medals or something on them to make them a bit more interesting.

Looking at the greenstuff pictures I was a little uncertain, it looked far too bulky. The painted pictures though look brilliant. No, he doesn't look the lean mean fighter, or the bulky muscular one. He's the large, belligerent officer that never had to work up the ranks. And the moustache is awesome.

That mustache is superb. The rest of the mini is great too, of course! I like the suggestion of medals to adorn the greatcoat.

Great job on the GS work, and the model as a whole looks great. However, I don't think I want a mustache ride...

That's one mean looking Commissar! Great work, looks excellent next to your other one as well. And taller is always better, he needs to be able to see all the scummy guardsmen running away from the Emperor's duty

Well done with the gs, it looks good. The moustache adds bags of character, reminds me of General Sir Anthony Hogmanay Melchett. Baaahh!

Thanks, everyone!

So, I've been doing moustaches for quite some time now. It's basically how I got my start with GS. If you look at my current army, you can see a lot of them. While I like the clean-shaven look of my other commissar, I was concerned that the two would look too similar if I didn't do something to clearly differentiate the two. Facial hair seemed the obvious choice. I was actually also thinking of doing a little beardlet right on the chin to make him look like the Joomanji guy, but I decided to leave it off in favor of a Super Troopers look. I'm thinking of giving a Raj Imperial look to my next one. The beardiness grows with every commissar...

And I'm glad that the tall, loud, belligerant jerk-ness came off. I like the idea that he got to where he is today because he's tall and he shouts at people until he gets his way.

As for the medals, I'm not certain where I'd put them, as his jacket flap would be covering them. That and this is a lowly platoon commissar, so I don't feel as needy to put bling on him. Perhaps if I ever include a lord commissar, one hand will be holding a bolt pistol, and the other hand will be pulling his jacket flap forward and pointing at all his medals.

Okay now's the time I think about going traitor just to get away from commisars like that. Dude's just scarey looking and he makes me wish I practiced more with GS.

Without the moustache, he'd be okay, but not the best dude ever. With that epic moustache, he is no longer mere commisar, HE IS EPICOMMISAR. HE EATS DANGER AND CRAPS VICTORY. In all seriousness, make him a comissar lord or something. He's just THAT awesome. Or maybe a Creed-counts-as.

Just looked at the link to your army, and it is utterly fantastic, and incredibly unique! Your painting skills, and your GS work are just phenomenal. Is there any chance we could get a talk through of your technique for sculpting hair and facial hair? I think it was the variety that made some of the troops really stand out. Brilliant work

As has been stated, this is very good. He seems like he has a very Russian feel to him, which fits with Commissars in general. I like the Stalin-esque, 'I'dont-care-if-your-toes-are-frozen-off' kind of hardass look he has. If I saw this on a table, I would be very impressed. (And if I were a guardsman with THAT guy behind me, I would find myself with sufficient motivation for pretty much anything.)

lol.

I think if I were to do a lord commissar, he would bump up the commissar-ness to the next level (ie. he'd at least have to be shouting through a megaphone).

Thanks!

The different heads are actually really easy (which is why I got started on them). All you do is knife down a regular cadian head so that he is no longer wearing a helmet, and then glue the head down. Then you GS a couple of little ears on, and let that dry. Then it's just putting down a little bit of superglue and a blob of GS and then working it in roughly parellel lines until you get what you want. Facial hair is the same way. I mean, I guess I could do a more formal tutorial if you guys really want.

When there is something scary in front, put something scarier in the rear.

That's sort of why I'm not doing epic charge poses with these guys, as I see their role as sitting back behind everyone else and shooting stragglers.

Nice job on the modeling, I like that mustache. But you should highlight your models, they will look better.

There actually is highlighting on everything except the black - it's just hard to see in the picture.

As for why not the black? In order to highlight black, you either get something that looks shiney, or something that looks dark grey, rather than black. In order to keep the black coats black, I'm letting the lighting do the highlighting. If it were something that had a lot of fine detail-work, I'd reconsider, but the natural lighting that's present wherever you view the model does a good enough job picking out clothing folds for me.

Plus, you do miss some of the detail, but I consider it a fair exchange for not screwing it up with a bad highlight.
