Sounds like Heresy! Good job this guy's here! Lord Inquisitor Coteaz, who'll be attached to the Deathwatch force I just completed, along with an Ordo Xenos Inquisitor who is currently in the works. A fantastic sculpt this (though I still hate how 'sharp' Finecast makes things like folds in cloaks and tabards, you loose all the smoothness you'd get with metal), and one of my favourite paintjobs in a while, inspired by his appearance in the Lord Inquisitor animated short. That's all for now, Coteaz does not share posts! But his comrade and a couple of other bits should materialise in the next couple of days. In the mean time, thanks for looking, any thoughts welcome! EDIT: WOOHOO, page 100!

A few days ago when I realised you were on page 99, I wondered what would be at the top of page 100 (and secretly wanted it to be a post from me ).
But you managed to get a suitably awesome looking model up there!
The face looks pink/redish. Is that right or just the picture?

Cheers folks!
@Zambro: His face is deliberately quite ruddy, Initially it was a paler/colder tone but it was getting lost getting lost in the grey fur around his collar, so I added a few washes to saturate it a little more so it stands out.

You've really got the hang of a muted palette, something that I have yet to master. I've saved quite a few miniatures to use as reference, I feel like sometimes my miniatures are too loud and could take a leaf out of this less is more mentality Automatically Appended Next Post: Great work and thank you for always being such a consistent and prolific member of the community!

Cheers guys! @ONI: A big part of the muted look is using a lot of washes and minimal highlights, so for the most part the initial base colour is as light as it gets, then you wash it down to create depth and shadows. Some stuff doesn't get highlighted at all, like Coteatz's red armour where I let the glossy red and metallic basecoat do all the 'highlighting' work for me, and just apply a darker red wash to the shadows to deepen it a bit. The other thing is to limit your colour palette, Coteaz only has 11 actual paints (though plenty of mixes thereof) used on him, which helps keep all the colours nice and tied together, the contrast comes from putting warm against cold colours and hard against soft textures rather than a block of bright red next to a block of stark white.

Is 'Eavy Metal Calling?

Thanks folks.
I have thought about submitting some of my work to White Dwarf, the trouble is they only take stuff on a white background and my style doesn't look so good on white, it ends up very washed out usually. I will experiment though, as it'd be worth doing.
On to today's pics!
First off, an Ordo Xenos Inquisitor to accompany Coteaz and the Deathwatch. With Coteaz being as puritan as you can get, I thought I'd make this guy much more of a Radical, hence his choice of weapon; an Eldar power sword and a gauntlet fashioned from a Genestealer claw and wired into his armour. Like the last kitbash Inquisitor I did, this one is based on the Genestealer Primus model, which makes a great base for the conversion.
And over on the Fantasy side of things, a model from Darklands by Mierce that I was hoping to add to my warband of Otherworld/Godslayer minis, but when she arrived the scale difference was just too noticable, she's makes Infinity minis look heroically scaled. This presented a challenge when painting as well, there simply wasn't enough depth to things like the armour and face for my usual layering method to work. So instead I thought I'd experiment a bit, and basecoated the whole model in Vallejo Ivory and did most of the work with washes. The only actual highlights are the brightest points of the armour and a few blends on the cape, the rest is all glazes and washes.
And that got me thinking... One of my goals for the year I mentioned a while back was to try and expand my repertoire of techniques and styles, so I grabbed a spare Blood Reaver and gave the light basecoat+wash approach another go... I quite like the result actually, the colours are a lot bolder and sharper than I get through layering and the skin in particular looks a lot more natural. I can't see the technique replacing black basecoats as my go-to, but for the odd appropriate mini I think it'll be a nice tool to have when I am after a cleaner, sharper look.
That's all for today, hopefully I'll have some more soon, possibly some more of those Corsair Eldar, and some experiments with white backgrounds to run past you guys. In the mean time, thanks for looking, any thoughts welcome!

How did you do the skin on the Blood Reaver? Was it literally washes over a white undercoat?

Ta chaps.
@Ynneadwraith: Pretty much! Aside from the very lightest areas, the skin was simply a series of red/brown washes. First was an all-over wash just to get the tone, then more focused and darker ones; the darker the wash, the smaller the area it was applied to in the recesses. The trick is that I used Vallejo Ivory as a basecoat, which is more of a creamy colour than pure white, that I think is what gives it the warmer look, I think over white it'd come out paler.

Gotcha thanks man so if I start with something like Bleached Bone (or whatever it's called these days) that might come out a bit warmer, unless I'm going for pale DEldar...
Anything to help me paint skin better I've been wanting to paint up this dude for the monthly painting competition, but I've never done such a large area of skin (or even skin on a non-eldar at all) before.

Yeah, that'd be my suggestion White undercoats just tend to leave stuff a bit cold in my experience, which is why I've typically avoided them. Then you just want to use a few mixes of red, brown and a dash of purple to tint the skin. The other thing to ensure the natural look is you want your basecoat to be really smooth and clean. If it's too thick, it'll create surface texture that the washes won't play nicely with and you risk ending up with a very rough finish

Thanks folks!
But now I must beg forgiveness, for I have sinned.... I said I wasn't going to paint a Space Marine this year between finishing the Deathwatch and the annual SM round of the monthly challenge, but I spectacularly failed my Willpower check, and this afternoon, after a week of false starts trying to get some Eldar done, this guy just sort of happened:
So yeah, sort-of resolution failed, but I'm still rather pleased with this guy. He's the first non-metallic Space Marine I've done in quite some time, as the Deathwatch and before them my Crimson Fists were all done from the metal undercoats, so it's good to see I haven't entirely lost my mojo as far as more traditional methods go. I might revisit a few bits later on but really he was just an attempt to kickstart my painting as I've not picked up a brush (or had any success with one, at least) for a couple of weeks really. I've got some models on order that should hopefully arrive on Monday, so in theory I won't suddenly go quiet again, and in for a penny, in for a pound, so I might well paint up some more Ultramarines if I can find the bits as well...
Final note for today, with the Deathwatch stuff completed and sent off, I've now got commission slots free, so if anyone is interested in having some work done then please do let me know (either via PM on here or the contact for on my site).
Anyway, that's all for now, thanks for looking and of course, any feedback welcome!
