Nine-month-old twin girls are seriously ill in hospital after apparently being mauled by a fox as they slept in their cots in east London.

Police officers and paramedics were called to a house in Homerton at about 2200 BST on Saturday.

A police source said the fox apparently entered the house through an open ground-floor door before attacking the twins in an upstairs room.

Both girls suffered arm injuries and one is thought to have facial injuries.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "Officers and the London Ambulance Service attended and found two nine-month-old girls with injuries.

"Both babies were taken to an east London hospital where their condition is described as serious but stable."

In other news, popularity with the traditional sport of bearbaiting is predicted to fall, while foxhunting is predicted to rise sharply later this year. Sir Godfrey comments:

"Release the hounds".

Thank you Sir Godfrey.

Seriously though, that's wierd. I mean, dingoes and such here are known to go for this stuff, but foxes are a new one for me.

Actually, I wouldn't mind this, since the chances of a bunch of sherry drinking ruperts in bright red coats surviving long in the East End of London is fairly slim.

All they'd find would be a bloodstain and a horse on bricks...

From the report, I do hope the animal they caught is tested for Rabies. That type of behavior, especially the fearlessness, can be typical of a rabid animal. It is usually a better sign than foaming at the mouth.

Of all the races of the universe the Squats have the longest memories and the shortest tempers. They are uncouth, unpredictably violent, and frequently drunk. Overall, I'm glad they're on our side!

Rabies doesn't really happen in the UK. Not sure how or why, but it's been pretty much wiped out over here. But it's the other problems Foxes can bring, like Mange.

Though Urban foxes tend to be the healthiest of the bunch, what with the easy pickings food wise etc.

We don't have rabies in the UK, except for some journalists.

That does seem a bit weird, all the foxes I have seen (quite a few around here) seem very afraid of humans, even children.

Still, a test should be done as a precaution. There is a dry traversable link between Britain and mainland Europe now that did not exist a short time ago. And London is still a port of call for many ships from areas that are not rabies free.

As recently as 2004, a new symptom of rabies has been observed in foxes. Probably at the beginning of the prodromal stage, foxes, which are extremely cautious by nature, seem to lose this instinct. Foxes will come into settlements, approach people, and generally behave as if tame. How long such "euphoria" lasts is not known. But even in this state such animals are extremely dangerous, as their saliva and excretions still contain the virus and they remain very unpredictable.[/qoute]
