Subject: Magnets too strong???

Death-Dealing Dark Angels Devastator

I am having an issue with my magnets. I am using Magcraft Superstrong Disc Magnets (0.25") for my vehicle's weapons, doors, flying bases etc. For the most part they work fine and I have zero issues. However, certain ones are simply being pulled off their glue spot and connecting with the opposite magnet point. This is obviously frustrating because I am finding that my flying bases (for DE raiders) and Dozer Blades (for Rhinos) are becoming unusable as the magnets detach. After regluing, they still seem to be inefficient. I am using GW super glue as well, so I don't think its a case of "poor materials."
I have only come up with one alternative: glue the magnet in place and then green stuff it to to the vehicle component to 1.) lessen magnetism and 2.) secure it to the model. I fear doing this because I don't want bulbous spots on my models due to poor greenstuffing, but I don't see that I have much choice. Are these magnets just too strong?

You might need to use stronger glue, or an epoxy even. Super glue is nice, and does work well on many things, but it isnt the magical ingredient that fixes everything. The stuff it doesnt work on, it REALLY doesnt work on. Maybe your magnets surface is just to smooth to stick to.
Id suggest gorilla glue, as it seems to fix any bonding problems I run into, but the problem with that is it expands and if you use to much itll expand out around the contact points and then your stuck with foamy hard stuff that is a pain to get off cleanly.
BUT if you do use gorilla glue I can tell ya, it really holds well, specially if you MIX in super glue, thats just an insane hold there

OK - luckily my wife is always prepared and she had a new bottle of Gorilla Glue stored away! I glued the magnet to my raider last night and I will be testing it over the next couple of days. Thanks for the advice and I hope this does it!
Also, you weren't kidding about the "expansion". We put on a miniscule drop and there is some exposed on the exterior of the magnet. It's not too bad and it's on the bottom of the vehicle anyway (which is why I did that one first), but I see what you mean. Thanks again...

use a piece of ferromagnetic metal like the head of a nail on one side where you are having trouble with the bond. The bond will be just as strong magnetically and the nail will be easier to mount. Also you will need half as many magnets, which will save money.

The other 'simple' option is just to use smaller diameter magnets. I've used 2mm x 1mm (0.08"x0.04" in old money) on my drop pod doors - strong enough to keep the doors closed, but weak enough to open easily & without being pulled out of the plastic

as above, use a steel nail as a "pin" to help anchor the magnet if you really need ones /that/ strong.
also when detaching, roll the magnet off don't pull it straight out.

a 1/4" magnet seems like overkill. The largest magnet I typically use is the 1/8" x 1/32" discs.

I use Gorilla Superglue. An entirely different product, but it is strong and a little flexible. I haven't had any problems with magnets popping off.
Failing that, epoxy is your friend!

It's been a few days, so I thought I'd inform you guys that the Gorilla Glue does seem to have paid off. I have been painting that raider for the last few days, so it has been removed from its magnetized base many times. So far, the magnets are holding firm. This experience has encouraged me to invest in smaller magnets, though. I think the ones I have are good for bigger parts, but the smaller ones seem that they would be more versatile.
Thanks again for your help and I hope this short thread will help others!

It seems that you've found a solution to your problem already, but I figure it can't hurt to mention that even something as simple as a small piece of paper or superthin plastic glued between the magnetic contact points will prevent one from becoming detached. I often drill a hole for the magnet mounting, then just glue a small paper square over it, which barely reduces the connectivity at all, but prevents one magnet from pulling off its spot. Unless you're using the kind of magnets that require special licenses to buy, I don't think one of them is going to go flying through a solid object to join its brother.

Sinking them in a snug hole works better - more surface area for the glue. Sometimes I drill plasticard of the same depth as the magnet and attach this first if sinking them is difficult. Also - as alanedomain said - putting something over them works too - gluing half millimetre plasticard over the top will do the trick. If its the strength of the magnets, a millimetre of plasticard (half each side) is not going to be an issue - and will actually make them easier to detach...
