Odd question, I know,
But the way I look at it... The flag (as far as I know) isn't used in any official capacity, unless you count David Cameron's publicity bid It represents a country that technically doesn't exist and isn't recognised by the European Union which in addition doesn't enjoy any of the perks of devolution.
Thus, the only groups that I immediately associate with this flag are those damn undesirable nationalists and, of course, sports fans.
I could go into why I don't like its use as a football flag... but I just wanted to put these points out for discussion:
1. Can we really call a flag which, if you wish to purchase it, leads to a great struggle to actually get your hands on one without a brand (ENGERLAND, BEER, ETC.) scribbled on it really a real flag?
2. Do any of you that don't belong to the stereotypical groups known for using the flag actually relate to it? Do you see the green fields of England, her quaint little maypoles and dancing countryfolk or just a few skinheads out of This is England?
3. What does the flag mean to you? Is England a country that doesn't need legal status? Though, of course, this is from my limited knowledge... if anyone can prove me wrong about England's existence, please do: I just see "United Kingdom" on the atlas is all

I'm not sure of contemporary usage but it does seem to have a pretty storied history. At first glance I certainly saw a connection with the Crusades.

England exists as a nation, because the Union is a coalition of nations.
It is also a historical symbol that mean s more than just football and needs to be reclaimed from the far right.
At any rate those who want to se it banned, not worn etc should be put in their place and people allowed to celebrate their identity. If its ok for the Scottish to have an identity then we can too.
|
n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.
It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. |

But surely the history of England dominating the British Isles and the flag's usage as a crusader 'un is something that far right are naturally going to be far more attached to than any modern and progressive Briton?

If England isn't technically a nation then it needs to be kicked out of the world cup post haste.
Quickly someone find the number for Fifa and let them know before the USA plays them tonight.
Also Australia beat England in the rugby tonight.
When I see St George's flag I think of Englanders who are proud of their country. Something that the other members of the union seem to have in abundance, but not in England.

Heacy that is political incorrectness gone mad.
You are ALLOWED to fly the Cross of St. George
It is ture Henners that it has sadly been (mis)appropriated by nutters so it is up to sane guys to claim it back. Being proud of ones' nationality is not the same as a believe in superiority or repression of others.

I don't know when it became racist or why but some people are complaining about the england so some councils have said that the flag is racist to keep the foreigners happy ( no offense)

It is flown all year round by a local firm.
My father has a tall flag pole which he runs up either the St. George's Cross or a White Ensign.
People are happily driving cars with them flapping merrily in the wind.
There will be one outside the local British Legion.
Our church doesn't have a flagpole.
Ah Found it. Lancashire County Council have banned flags on certain council vehicles. It appears not to be a universal ban and seems appriopriate that certain vehicles maintain a sense of professionalism.
Phil Halsall, the council's executive director for resources at the county council, said: "It's nonsense that we've banned staff from celebrating the World Cup. Many of the management team are keen supporters themselves.
Of course our first responsibility is to provide the best services to our residents. Where it's appropriate, we're very happy for staff to show their support for the England team.
There are some areas of our services though where flying a flag or wearing a shirt is less appropriate, so we've asked managers to exercise their discretion.
Of course our first responsibility is to provide the best services to our residents. Where it's appropriate, we're very happy for staff to show their support for the England team.
The only exception to this is that we've requested that staff not display flags on county council-branded vehicles. We've asked staff to make this compromise in the interest of making sure our residents know we put services to them first."
Usual PR speechifying but sounds fair enough.

@chub: Strange, when I ask the locals around here, they insist that there is no such thing as "Northern" Ireland. I do live in Ireland though. But yes, it's a real flag. To be honest, I wish England would just get rid of Scotland. They don't want us and we certainly don't need them. The North Sea hardly does anything nowadays since we import everything from Russia, so thats no reason to keep Scotland.

What I find strange about that is that, even when the British tried to ignore the existence of the Northern Irish...
