Good ol' Surrey... And I'll add a quick apology, I see a bit of text is missing from that reply, I meant to say "I believe they committed violence". My knowledge of pre-war Ireland is, in all honestly, fairly lax. It was simply my understanding that the Northern Irish opposed Home Rule violently.

Which is itself a variation of the Flag of St. George.

(The flag of) St. George is both real and valid. It still has much usage in the UK, especially in different areas of HM Government. The Royal Navy is just one such example.

Which suggests the Royal Navy fly the Flag of St. George.

I think you are referring to the Ulster Covenant which was signed in 1912 and did oppose home rule, AFAIK the violence was commited mainly by the republicans culminating 4 years later in the Easter Uprising, but as we all know the violence would go on for another 90 years with attrocities from both sides of the coin However it is interesting to note that at the time Sinn Fein opposed the home rule bill as well.

Because Sinn Fein want an all Ireland government or nothing at all.

To this day they refuse to take up their Westminster Seats and the decision to take their Dublin seats split it in two.

Funnily enough, This is England was about seperating skinhead aesthetics from racism, showing them as a working class group and highlighting their origins in Jamaican rude boy culture. It then shows the introduction of racism into the movement.

It's a pretty good movie, if you don't mind the inconsistancy that's inevitable with amateur actors and semi-improvisation.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Hrm, I liked the film, but clearly it did little to impact my views of the group (they smash a house darn it). That kid was annoying, mind...

Yeah, the movie wasn't a complete success in seperating them, in that it didn't really, and instead spent the body of the movie dealing with racist skinheads.

It's a shame really, because working class culture deserves its own symbols free of racism.

Ah, well I agree with Henners that the St George Cross makes me think of uber-nationalists/skinheads/racists/hooligans, and did even before seeing This is England, but that's because I'm Scots. I actually wish I didn't see it that way, and have been trying to train myself recently by thinking nice thoughts about English people I know (like my GF) when walking past an England flag. My gut still doesn't agree though.

It needs to be reclaimed, but I think more to the point, why the FETH do the Cornish have a flag?

Run a whole lot of wfrp and other rpg's, play The Woods and Kill Team, gather and look mournfully at imperial guard knowing I'll never finish enough to use them on the tabletop

As always i have no time for any of this nonsense, im from Yorkshire and some idiots there want to be seperate as well.

I was based in Exmouth for 2 years, i heard enough of this gak back then and it bored me to the back teeth. To be fair 99% of the locals think its idiotic as well, but you always find one like this.

Ill tell you what, we can fight you for it. You "Celtic" fringe Cornish fethers can be independent if you beat us in a good old fashioned war. Ill lead 50,000 men from Yorkshire and the North East and we will crush you soft southern pansies beneath our iron heels.

At this point we will take all your pasties, but not much else. You can keep the cycloptic toothless tractor driving women.

We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.

On a more realistic note, the Cornish economy, all things being equal, wouldn't support devolution.
They would have less ability to support themselves than Scotland without huge subsidies from the EU or Westminster.

It ain't gonna happen.

Ummm one word NO!

Following your inability of not being able to accept St Georges Cross as an official flag, you can no longer be classed as English therefore you cannot lead us sSouthern Pansies into war

However as a tru bred Wiltshireman I will gather forces and lead us forth, who will rally under my banner
