.................................... Searching for Iscandar

Blind men throwing darts at a map...just kidding.

Most likely is whoever reported the highest capacity, was told to run the event.

Of course, having been in Utah playing local tournaments for a decade I've never been to a Endzone tournament nor heard of one.  I was quite surprised to hear the claim of 'we run tournaments here every 2 weeks'.

This from a place I walked into once when I moved down here, laughed at the terrain, boards, and layout....eight or nine years ago....and never went back nor heard a thing about how 'competitive' they were.

Maybe my words will carry a little more weight in that I made this account today just to post on this subject after being a lurker for many  years?  lol

I tried my best to lose all of my games, as I have a invite to the tournament already (wife said I can't go, which is awesome),

You already have an invite? Or did you mean that you already know you can't go because of the wife? If the first, how in hell did you manage to wrangle that?

I didn't ask, I merely got a invite to attend extended my way.  But the higher authority said I better take my ass to a lawyer office if I try and go on a trip without her, so...

I'm not bitter, it just sounds that way.  In a couple days I'll be over it.  Friend of mine that got screwed who is without a doubt one of the nicest guys I've ever known, well...I hope he gets over it.  I think we were there 20 minutes waiting while he unloaded inside the store.

Interesting. Well, there's only 4 people in GW US that would be able to actually do that, and I can ask them all tomorrow about it. If it wasn't one of those 4, they were blowing smoke up your skirt about it. Nothing personal, but when everyone else has to place in the top 3 of two tournaments, no one should just be getting an invite offered to them.

....and lo!.....The Age of Sigmar came to an end when Saint Veetock and his hamster legions smote the false Sigmar and destroyed the bubbleverse and lead the true believers back to the Old World.

Scen 1 favors assault and/or fast armies.
Scen 2 depends entirely going first. Best I saw was a Minor Loss for anyone going second in that round.
Scen 3 was actually pretty balanced. But Escalation can bone the best of armies at times.

I disagree.

#1 didn't favor any army in particular, as long as you had one of two things: speed, or range. Either one would do. Speedy armies had a bit of an edge in gathering bonus battle points, but that was all.

#2 - I won this game by going second. It was only a minor victory, but that was more due to the fact we only got to turn 4. Had the game gone all six turns, a major or even a massacre were quite likely. as my opponent had three expensive units that were about to get the full attention of my heavy weapons. The key to this mission was largely in deployment (which is why we only got to turn 4.)

#3 - I'm glad that they had a mission with Escalation.

I am pretty sure it's not the mission and he's just venting. Thier were some major problems and it was how it was run and not the players. The players were actually all pretty good and had judges checked lists and went around to various tables to check on things it would probably have turned out differently. I am already over it but my one regret in hindsight I would have thrown my last match and let my final opponent win the whole deal because he was great to play and was with the group who traveled all the way from Nebraska.  I left after my last match early because of all the cluster that was taking place.  I was to the point that I really didn't care if I won or not and they were probably going to flip a coin anyway.  I received a box of chaos marines for my troubles.

I won the Great Escapes tournament for northern California.

Placing was:

2nd:  Tie:  Space Marines/Eldar

In my happy place, I'm in my happy place...

I placed 4th in Southbend (behind 3rd by 4 points), I lost to Mike Mutscheller (currently 1st in GT rankings and I can see why) in the second round which, with the terrain in the store we played in (only 3 pieces of 5+ cover) was really about who went first. However, the 2nd place qualifier is not sure if he is going to be able to go to the next round so I would still advance on a technicality.

2nd mission everyone in our area who went first won, that was the worst scenario I have ever played as far as balance goes. 1st turn is often important but should not be the game decider

Mike is a smart player who can write a list better than most I have seen, a 43 point inquisitor with a tarot really paid off in that. As did all the searchlights in his army. I didn't really believe the scenarios when I saw them, I should have tailored my list and brought my 9 serpent army. Oh, well. There's always the finals.

Since this is the rumors section I have heard that in the UT tournament the first place Bug player was cheating and that the judge possibly witnessed this and still maybe recieved first place prize? Who knew. I guess maybe I am better off not having placed because at this point the whole validity of the thing is in question. I must say that besides how it was run I did enjoy my other two opponents sans #2 with list problems.

Does anyone know if the winners will be given (or be able to purchase) Baltimore GT tickets?

Because a lot more people want to go now, and it does not make since to fly half away across the country for just one day of gaming.

Post your list man.  Things were so disorganized between rounds I never even saw a GK army.  I'd love to see a competitive GK army, be something positive out of this mess.

Seconded (again! So, is that... thirded?)!

Please post you GK list!

Again, I would love to see what a tournament successful GK list looks like...

Hey I was the guy who got screwed in UT. I am a lot more over it now than I was on Sat. For the GK player (lemartes?) who took third or fourth: I haven't heard anything from Endzone about how things went down after I left and as soon as I told the wife I had placed 4th and wouldn't be going to Baltimore, she made plans for the weekend. (They work fast don't they?) Second, you are right I did end up at the losers end of things and you came up with a better score, so I would like for you to go since I can't. Beyond that, you beat the cheater and I didn't.

I would also love to see your GK list, I haven't seen a competetive one yet.

As far as the tournament went, I will pretty much second everything that stelek and stjohn said. Poorly run over all, mostly due to being overwhelmed I am sure. (Who sets up tables that close together by the way? I was grinding with the guy behind me the whole time, felt like I should buy him dinner afterward. )

1. Terrain was crap very inconsistent in type, size, amount, and placement. Do you ever seriously place single trees as terrain? (the more stores I play at the more I love my "home store" Mind Games, the owner strives to make not only good looking but playable and consistent terrain for all of his tables.

2. Why should the tournament organizer leave the site? especially for 45 minutes.

3. Isn't the point of registration to have the judges check the lists and then verify throughout the day they are the ones being played? How did forge world models/rules slip through that?

4. The judges couldn't even resolve simple questions in a timely fashion and were allowing uninvolved players and spectators to put in their opinions to sway decisions.

5. By my count a three round tournament shouldn't take 13 hours. 7 hours for actual gaming 1 hour for registration, and two one hour breaks is still only 10.

6. Relegating a third of the players to a separate area, and having no judges available for that area. Really?

7. Did no one else see a potential tie coming? TRACK VP's or something!

8. The guy with the TMC list who tied for first was cheating, judges saw it heard about it and did nothing, I was on the next table and was aggravated.

9. The guy who cheated won a door prize that was more than I got for 4th place and the same as the GK player who took 3rd. Anyone see a problem there?

Aside from that, and the scenarios I really enjoyed the tournament.  My second and third opponents were awesome to play, I have to give huge props to Tim for coming all the way from NEBRASKA!

Those of you who say the scenarios weren't off, how do you win with a footslogging IG army vs. fleeting nids when there is one objective in the middle of the table covered by a huge patch of area terrain? I did my best and actually controlled the ticket for much of the game, but seriously? Does that really seem balanced? I thought tournaments were to test skill not set up scenarios where one type of army had a distinct advantage.

well cleveland had some issues as well

the lists were not checked

there was a terrain issue from the get go, the players( the majority) wanted more the owner talked to another store owner who was comming to play and they agreed to bring terrain when they arrived and got permission from one the guys working the event to put it out there was a big arguement over it

the person who came in first was found out he had an illegal army list, so that result is in doubt now

i do know gw was emailed and contacted this morning about that issue...the guy who ended up in fourth would more than liklely end up winning overall if he is disqualified and the points awarded to him

the lists of rules is right on the ard boys sheets

it says quite clearly if you are found to have an illegal list you will be disqualified

so who knows

Posted GK list. Organizers should have caught that list in the first round when you played against it that way you would have had a win and moved up the pyramid to play other winners giving you the oppurtunity to compete for the top spot. I was discouraged when they asked me if I wanted him DQ'd instead of them making a call as I can't find it in me to DQ anyone because that's just me. My frustration came from the fact that thier ended up being 3 lists floating around and with MC's is that 4 wound on a Dakka fex like I expected or 5 wounds according to my opponent with 3 different lists. Again I don't know if thier is legitimacy to the placings any way. I was called late Sunday night and told I wasn't third after all and I believe you are now third.

and the funny thing about this

at this level of play you dont make mistakes in your army lists
not if you intend to compete

not only that, but he use white paper (normal i know) and used i think it was yellow ink for his home made army list
so it was difficult to read and i think there was only one copy

the guys whos list was illegal was walking around claiming it didnt affect the game
that doesnt matter one bit, if i or anyone else was playing with 2509 or 2515 and they won with massacres do you think everyone would be saying it didnt matter?

ill be interested to know if gw does anyhting about this at all...after talking to the guy today he was first told that they (gw) didnt give a flying fornication about it.....the guy is really ticked off hes been on the phone most of the afternoon

It's a shame that Cleveland went so bad. Jim (the owner of recess) generally does a pretty decent job. I finished a close fourth in the qualifier, which wasn't that bad since I knew I'd get trounced in the semis anyway. Do you happen to recall who/what army took first?

I totally hear you, you should never be asked to make a decision on the DQ of another player. That is why there are judges. I also was suspicious of the fex, because I asked at the start of the game to verify and he said all of his fexes had 4 wounds and a 3+, then suddenly when I put the fourth wound on one he "remembered" it had 5 and a 2+. I took his word for it which I shoudn't, so most of this is probably my fault for assuming people come to compete fairly and are honest. I am usually the one making fun of Utahns for their idealism and naivete, looks like it is rubbing off.

Funning thing is they never told me that he was running an illegal list, I had to ask when I heard rumor, they never told me they changed my score, I had to inquire at the end when I heard rumors, and they didn't tell me that the final results had changed until I read your post, and called to verify. Real awesome.

Seriously though Lemartes, please take the spot, I told the guys at Endzone to contact you. You deserve the spot. Enjoy, and kick some tail for us out here.

Oh that's easy, don't bring an all footslogging army, bring a balanced army.  Put some vehicles in there and drive them through the fleeting bugs to surround the objective.  Seriously I think balanced lists are the way to go.  60 heavy weapons all on guard troops looks great on paper, but when to have to move you are in trouble.  We are saying the missions were fine for balanced lists and all foot guard is not balanced.

I've heard that the scenarios gave one type of army a distinct advantage.  Could someone tell me the one type of army that had that advantage?  I know the answer, a balanced army.

Nice Rant, 'Boo-Hoo' we all feel sorry for you now, Happy?  You arent going to the finals, so why do you care about any of this?

I on the otherhand had a great time.  The missions are meant to 'shake things up' as it were.  From what I have seen, they definatly did that.

Wow looking back at the posts, I came across this. Isn't part of being a gaming community working to improve it for all of its members not just the "elite" who advance to the finals? It is posts like this that make guys like me not read or post on the forums, because they seem like a closed group of snobs that bash others for their opinions.

I happen to know stelek personally and know that his comments and concerns were voiced first of all for the gaming community as a whole and second for me as his friend because he knows my distaste for exactly this.

Sure the scenarios shook things up but not in a way that made the tournaments appealing for those trying to be competetive. It in general removed strategy from the game itself so that one boiled down to who got first turn, one was based on having a faster army than your opponent and one was fairly even. When a tournament for a strategy based game comes down to who gets lucky on one single roll, it seems not to be a strategy game anymore.

So what you are saying is that only balanced armies win and that no one who wins ever min maxes their army?

By the way could you describe for me a "balanced army"? I hear all this talk from people about "balance", could you describe it for me?

From what I gathered the Eldar and TMC lists seemed to perform the best, neither of those lists are known for their "balance".

I guess I must have just lucked out on opponents at Endzone from what I read here. I played against another Necron player in the first round, and he was a pretty good Joe. In the second round I was facing a Tyranid army that had gaunts that kept getting recycled from any table edge. The big thing that saved me that game was being able to shift a couple units with the Deceiver so I wasn't having to face a lot of rending or monstrous creature action all at once, added to the fact that I got first turn. It was a pretty good game also, but I found out at the end that my opponent had given his Tyranids some abilities with Psycic powers that he'd misread in his codex. That game ended as a tie match.
My last opponent was a Chaos player that was a pretty good guy to go up against as well and he gave me some good ideas for my own Chaos army. What I learned from this match was well worth the minor victory I gave up to him.

Are you guys sure the Tyranid player was cheating and if so, how? I ask this because I know the guy from years past and it doesn't seem his style.
