Fantastic work. Great sculpting job on the boss.

I'd love to see some real visceral, bloody gore painted on those chain choppas!

you might wanna try giving your warboss's helmet horns like the ones you avatar got. that would look like he ripped them off a bloodthirster

You and I are on the same wavelength my friend, i was experimenting with that last night

I just need to either decide on ones that are appropriate size or just model my own. I'm leaning towards the latter just cause i think by the time i looked around and decided i could have sculpted ones that are the best match.(plus i cant find my old thirster.)

Update time: I have my boys done and i started another nob despite wanting to paint some first. Reason being i found my SM terminator sprues that i half built so im fashioning an orky set of chaos terminator armor. I'll post pics of the progress tonight or tomorrow.

Its just been to cold to prime anything

come to think of it. blood thirster horns would make nice toothsticks for my Warlord. he gets tired of beating the crud out of 'Fexes all the time.

Small update:

Heres a WIP shot of my next Nob:

The head looks freaky im sure because of the extended helm i put on him. Its the GD black orc fro ma few years back with a defiler eye piece which is part of the helmet so will most likely be red. He's intended to be the armored behemoth aspect of Khorne. I remember back in the day my friend who started me on 40k had a killer khornate termie lord and it was so imposing on the field so this is my sort of homage. So first was the demonic fury Nob now i introduce the start of Thrakuz the Kan Op'nah!

Heres whats been taking the majority of my time though:

Just a sample of some of the boyz i have done so far. Its hard holding back on the khorne bits on them cause i love how they mesh but i cant have them all looking like 'Ard boys on crack.

Thanks for the feedback so far guys!

Yea i planned to make them all pretty armored up to get across the berserker look. If i ever use 'ard boys in a game though i had just planned on pulling the biggest ones aside cause some are more bulked out than the others as you can tell from the pic. I have about 25 or so done so far.

I'm really diggin this project, I love seeing armies with strong, unique themes. Keep it up!

As an aside, could you explain your technique for the gore on that test models chain choppa? I've found people paint blood and gore so many different ways, and yours looks pretty ace.

Of course, i think the main thing is lot of people paint blood and gore FX on sloppy with the idea that itll look random and natural. I dont think this is that case and when i realized that it helped my look.

I just put a base of red gore on first to the main area where the "magic" happens along with some spots of both small and medium size around where the arterial spray would likely be.

Then i put of smaller layer of thinned (not ink thin) blood red of the main part and smaller spots both on their own and in the middle of the medium sized red gore spots.

Finally i just go over it a bit with red ink doing basically the same thing as the other colors. The red ink can be a little more random as is not staying within the base of red gore. Its a sort of intelligent or conscious randomness that makes it look cool. It took me a lot of practice on my chaos army before i had the right look. Also important to note that chain weapon look better with a lot of the spray spots for obvious reasons.

Edit: Oh yea and dont thin the red ink as you would with shading, water it down a bit so its controllable but you want it heavily pigmented.

NOBS!!

Quick update on the Nob, he's done for the most part i just have to add some chaos flavor to the armor scraps. I only had loyalist terminators for sacrifice so i have to put some extra time into it. I think im going to add two horns onto the shouldters to add some extra color to break it up as hes gonna be very red. I'll also be positioning that backplate up in the air a bit for some "extra speed". Heres a front, back, and a size shot for you jackals.

I think my next Nob will be a self challenge project. I wanna do a savage berserker style Nob complete with bare orky chest scarred up something fierce, possible with big open wounds too.

As there is no models ive seen that fit the bill ill probably do a full sculpt of at least the top half/torso. I did a similar thing on my shaggoth so i know i can do it but this will be a bit smaller and orkoid musculature is a little weirder.

My only problem is that i wanna game with them and bring them to events and im just not digging the power claws even though they are the better choice in regard to weapons. I wanted have this next guy dual wielding axes cause that would be best from a modeling perspective but in game its weak. Any ideas as to how to replace or make a counts as power claw that would fit my theme better?

Im gonna paint the boyz i have first though otherwise ill get carried away with modeling and never do it, so i have time before i start up this one.

Who says an Ork with a medium sized power fist (or powered gauntlet, or armor plus wires, or...) can't then use said power fist to hold a dead rippy axe? Maybe a chain axe, sharing a power supply with said power fisty-clawy goodness?

You gave me an idea, instead of using a the medium sized claw, he could could be wicked scarred up like i said and then have a Bionik hand holding the axe(s). It may not be a powerclaw but i could at least argue it.

I'm not to good at modeling robot bits though for lack of experience. Should be fun!

For those interested (beware wall o' text):

A company of World Eaters Space Marine traitors is on a mission to recover an ancient chaos artifact. Their Commander is a powerful veteran of the heresy and received a vision from their psychics during warp travel that said artifact may contain the power needed to ascend to demonhood.

Not going to pass this up the Marines descend upon the planet in question and quickly realize that it is and has been for many decades a well established Ork world. The crude planetary defenses and lack of intelligence gathered results in the Marines flagship being brought down far from the suspected location of the artifact. Upon learning of the crash landing a boss of the nearby tribe The Goreteef, Khar'Grim as he would later be known, sent his boys to investigate. The resulting incident would be the spark of a many decade long campaign of slaughter that would culminate at the head of the strange monolith that the orks had stayed away for as long as any of the boyz could remember.

The battle drew the majority of the entire planets population as word quickly spread of the skill of the traitor veterans in combat. Still the orks fell in scores being no match for the World Eaters ferocity. Still it was a battle of attrition and every marine felled was a great loss to war effort. It was the boss known as Khar'Grim and his comrade Teeg, (later known as Steelstompa)an aspiring mekboy, who started salvaging the fallen Marine equipment and outfitting his clan. With the combination of a closing technological gap and ork physiology, The Goreteef started to turn the tide with the combat exponentially increasing the orks martial prowess.

Ultimately in a final duel between ancient Champion of Khorne and the almost unrecognizable Ork Warlord, the Champion of Chaos was disarmed and made a B line for the stone that now emanated fury and crackled with barely contained warp energy. The Lord placed his hands upon the artifact and began to invoke the rites that would allow him to ascend to the foot of the brass throne. Before finishing his words however the towering Khar'Grim buried the champions own axe between his shoulder and neck rending him in two in one bloody arc.

This act was met with great roars of triumph from his now heavily scarred and frighteningly powerfull clan. A clan which now was had absorbed the remainder of the Ork planets population yet was no larger than an average greenskin warband. The scene before them was not being watch by ork eyes alone as the ritual, although incomplete, garnered the gaze of the Blood God's pantheon and it seemed that as one champion fell another rose.

Since then many systems have felt the rage of the so called "WAAAAGH!! Eaters", a monicker that is usually said through the barely contained snicker of those Imperials who have heard of the rumours but laugh at the idea of Orks parading around as space marines. But those few who have escaped the barbarity of the tribe once called The Goreteef with any semblance of sanity know the idea of imitation being the highest form of flattery when a chaos god is involved is no laughing matter.

Good fluff. But the world eaters seem very calculating to me for some reason. Not how they should be, chained to a wall and frothing at the mouth.

Im having a really hard time painting atm. Ill post some pictures tonight if to show what i mean but my ork flesh technique went to sh1t. I haven't really painted anything since Games Day '06 so i didnt expect to paint a masterpiece right off the (re)starting line but im stumped.

I wanted to make my ork flesh a bit nonstandard by going a bit earthier rather than the classic look for them. So im using Catachan green as a base and moving to a sort of camo green mix. This is, from what remember, how i did that first ork thats on the front page. Problem now is when i do what i think i did they come out sickly looking and pale when i need them to be darker. It's obvious that im either shading poorly or my mix is off, or both. Since im basically relearning my own paint scheme im open to any color recommendations if theres a better way to pull off a more natural looking ork.

The armor im pleased with, i decided to brighten the armor up substantially so the models would pop more and tie it together better when fielded. My tests on armor change are going well in spite of my painting break so thats at least encouraging. The flesh dilemma has me worried though. Thoughts?

Again thanks for the comments and criticism.

Mix with a darker green perhaps? Sorry I bought about 1500p of Orks a few year ago, but they're still gathering dust. Maybe after I've painted a few I'll be a little more helpful.

two words! ork hide shade.

catachan an camo certainly looks good, but do you really want all your orks to have the same skintone? there are so many greens out there. you should really check out the foundatiuon range, those are some good greens, which don't look like they were created for painting power armor.

Thanks, I picked up pretty much all the new foundation greens last night so ill be experimenting this week. Hopefully it works out, cause if it doesn't im holding you personally responsible

New Colors:

What do you guys think? Its a lot brighter then the original concept, but i like it i think. This guys not quite done but im pretty happy he didnt turn out like total garbage after a 2 year painting hiatus. Lemme know what you think, he looses a bit of menace bieng brighter but i think as a whole the army will look far better.

I like the model, but he doesn't look like a veteran like your army's fluff implies every ork in it is. His skin would look better a lit bit darker and it would make him more veterany looking.
