well there is more to this hobby than "GW". the hobby is wargaming/miniature modelling, the "GW hobby" is a marketing slogan GW came up with.

Would your $1000 of guard be offended by my £50 guard army converted from black tree design zulu wars brits?

Back to the original poster, while I like the idea I dont like the models too much. I saw something similar last year when someone made a dryad army from wire. It actually looked ok. I like the idea of imperial robots, maybe even an attempt at robotic nids but I think you are gonna struggle to get these accepted.

No, but if you showed up with some paddle-pop sticks with googly eyes stuck on and claimed that was a Guard army, with a couple of shoe-boxes as tanks, then I would.

I think this a pretty good idea! but if you want to make a robotic army, why don't you use any necron bitz? I think they will fit perfect with your 'concept'!

To be honest, I didn't really like the miniatures until I started hearing people say things like that they're an "insult to the hobby". Now I kinda want to put them up with such laudables as the Simpsons marines, and the butterfly and surfing Necrons. And anywhere someone is taking their toy soldiers too seriously, I hope the Twistywirenids can swoop in and save us all.

That said, at present these are not models. Models look like things other than what they actually are. These things look just like what they actually are, and don't look like anything else to me. These are proxies for GW miniatures. Now I don't mean that pajoratively- in my time I have used plenty of proxies.

If you want to improve these, I recommend trying to make them look more like stuff other than what they actually are. For example, your rippers do not look like self-moving saw blades, and I would never have even thought that was what you were going for without you saying as much. Some plasticard and some lego wheels would probably go a long way toward making your ideas come out.

P.S. the elmo berserkers are a stroke of genius.

Insert awesome picture here

I would totally play against this army. I would laugh my ass off when it got plunked down on the table and proceed to enjoy a game with someone who obviously has a great sense of humor.

So keep going mate. I would play against a 'concept' Army like that any day.

No. Just... no.

The fish "sculpture" actually looks like a fish and while the pile of screws actually has what looks like a naked girl, it doesn't look like a swarm of anything other than a bunch of screws.

I'll keep going, mate. You keep on compairing apples to eggplant.

Thank you!

Also thank you to everyone who has made constructive contributions!

More pics and updated fluff will be on the way soon. I have taken many ideas that will build on the new fluff (original fluff from White Dwarf 104 (1988)) warped and made into my own twisted designs. http://www.gamehobby.net/subject_indexes/subject_wh40k_chapter_approved.html in case anyone wants a sneak peak at the beginnings of the Order.

Trust me there is a lot more to these bots than meets the eye... groan... seriously though there's a lot more on the way that will make these guys pretty awesome looking. What you have seen is nothing but the beginning. Also the bots are to near-perfect size ratios... so... yea.

Well, erm, hmmm. That's didn't come out right!

Anyhoo, with greenstuff and GW bits, I'd give it a game on the table. Neat idea, just needs to be fleshed out more like everyone has said. Can't wait to see it all finished!

Ya kno, for some inspiration that could help you, Dingus_Egg, I'd check out Navarro's "technovirus" genestealer sculpt he did a while back, you should be able to find it by clicking on the link to his fabulous website in his profile (he posted earlier in this thread). I still remember how interesting that conversion looked, and maybe it can give you some ideas.

If these robo dudes you're working on are on almost the same exact scale as their tyranid counterparts, then you are definitely on the right track. Keep in mind, if you wish to play this army at a tournament or at most GWs, they will require your models to have, well, GW bits on them.

Keep up the good work. Your approach is innovative and interesting, and even if you're still working the idea out visually just keep working on it you'll find the solution you're looking for.

Just the fact that you're upsetting all these "I define what the GW Hobby is" wonks means that you're on the right track.

That Khorne army is fantastic.

I nearly fell off my chair when I saw that.

I think that armies like this show that this hobby can have a sense of humour rather than everyone involved taking it too seriously.

After all, we are all pushing little plastic dollies around a table.

Back on topic - I'd like to see more however doesn't matter how it turns out, providing it is easy enough to tell what the units are, I'd play it.

I don't think it's right for the 40k system. I think it's more appropriate for one of those lego-based systems where you fight with lego models and break pieces off of them as they take damage.

Definitely starting to see where you are going with this. I am looking forward to seeing a completed model!

If you're looking for ideas, I bet checking out any of the various "scratch built titan" threads around here would offer some ideas. I've seen some awesome looking robotic feet around ^_^
