I think people are sick of GW pushing space marines as THE army to collect, so all the beginners buy them, they always get the priorities in terms of codexs, plastic model etc...
The ultramarines are by far the most popular chapter, have you ever seen a beginner in the shop not paint them blue? For some people they stand for everything wrong with the space marines, popular, goody goody, and boring.
However, I like the space marines as an army I think ultramarines are cool, its just a shame that GW seem a bit obsessed with them.

People are conforming by joining a group trying to be non-conformist in their disapproval of the chapter of the month... Ultras have been on 2, maybe 3 of the last starter sets so they have had a while in the spotlight. When I started Blood Angels were on the box cover, and they were the popular ones. The problem is Ultras have been on so long, they've been popular so long, people are sick of them.

My WHFB armies were Bretonians and Tomb Kings.

I don't really not like Ultras, I think their colour scheme is excellent. The reason I don't like them is that they are constantly stealing from the other chapters. (Heavenfall Blades-> Relic Blades, Double stuff dreadnoughts, Plasma in line squads, etc.)

Thats why I don't like them.

Plasma in Tac Squads was originally possible... they tried to take it away to give DA something special, then gave it back when DA got Raven and Death Wing.

My WHFB armies were Bretonians and Tomb Kings.

Plasma was never a DA specialty until they invented that in 3rd. Marines in 2nd Ed could take any of the standard Heavy Weapons and Special Weapons.

Working backwards:

5E AoBR = Ultramarines
4E BfM = Ultramarines
3E box = Black Templars
2E box = Blud Angelz
RT cover = Crimson Fists
