Guinness? That crap? Blech, no thank you. It's a drink for Students and Posers.
And there is *no* such thing as 'Scotch' young man. We bloody defined it (didn't invent it sadly. That was actually a Muslim discovery, believe it or not) and as such, I object to having a drink named wrongly. Especially as no one else can get it right and instead produces 'orrible stuff.

Yes, yes. Pissy Foreign Lagers would include Stella, being a) Pissy b) Foreign and c) A Lager.
Me, I'm rather partial to Hobgoblin and Spitfire myself. Newky Broon will suffice in a pinch though.

British ales are great.
Guinness is a passable stout, but they've really blanded it up since the old days.
Wrassler's XXXX is what you really want to be drinking, stout wise. It's the kind of stout your grandad would have drunk. O'Hara's is nice too.
Belgian beers are also great, and the belgians and the germans are the only people who can get me to drink lager. Our mass produced imported lagers are so terrible they make me ill. American imports tend to be terrible too, but I keep hearing good things about microbreweries. Gonna have to try that stuff out if I ever make it over to the states.
All in all, good beer is good beer, and national pride doesn't come into it.
Oh, and whiskey is better than whisky any day.

Something to watch while you're A) In the hospital B) wondering how you're going to pay back the idiot who bailed out out or C) sitting stunned and amazed wondering how you avoided A and/or B. If this is true than some would claim God created Russia to ruin their parties. Me, I like the stuff myself. I usually prefer a strong stout though, can't stand most lighter beers, although the occasional red has surprised me.
Was in Nashville this weekend, ate at some big brewery/steakhouse thing on Broadway. Had a stout they called "Iron Horse" and immediately preferred it over Guinness. I recommend it if you are ever in the area.

I haven't been able to drink for about six months. Have to pick up my girlfriend from work late at night, and I start work at gay in the morning. Plus my budget only lets me go near Warhammer when I miraculously don't have any bills to pay (this usually means a really big one arrives the day after I buy a bunch of stuff).
Since this is turning into a booze discussion, vodka is definitely my spirit of choice.
Stop associating vodka exclusively with Russia. You all sound silly. I do like the 44% Smirnoff though, but it's taxed pretty hard here.
I like dark ales otherwise - most Australian beers are undrinkable, but there are a couple okay ones. Guiness is meh, I don't waste money on it. Fosters Lager is associated with Australia and is apparently popular imported, but I don't know anyone who drinks it, and finding it on tap is pretty rare.

The Daily Show used to get a lot of mileage out of the the silliness of American politics in general and the media. It's only as the Bush admin got worse and worse that they started focussing on them more and more. It hasn't really been that funny over the course of the election, so maybe this'll be for the best anyhow.

The Daily Show mocked silliness from both parties and other media/news sources before the Bush admin made itself such a spectacular target. While the writing might not be quite as easy, they’ll keep going strong.
They actually still do a fair amount targeted at silliness in news organizations. If you remember their Joe the Plumber coverage, it notably mocked the media coverage of him (first making a big deal out of him, then making his life a hell by over-coverage and investigation of him) at least as much as it mocked the Republican usage of him.

Being used to political satire ranging from Peter Cook to Bremner, Bird and Fortune I have found the Daily Show to be lacking, still funny just biased. It seems to be the other side of the Fox news coin. I get the impression that with American TV you choose a channel that agrees with you and stick with it. That way your TV never tells you anything you don't want to hear.

As for the drinking discussion, my wife and I have found a new place which does have Boddington’s on draught, as well as several other imports. Last night we went out and alongside my fish & chips I had a nice 20oz of Boddington’s and 20 oz of Holy Grail Ale. Yum.
http://www.theholygrailpub.com/beerwine.html
Back when I drank seriously, Vodka was a favorite. It was always very kind to me, and I can’t say I ever got a hangover with it. Nowadays I don’t imbibe as much, and a nice single malt Scotch whisky is my usual choice if I want the hard stuff. Much as my Irish ancestors might protest, I have to say I like the good Scotch ones better than any Irish I’ve had.

Is difficult to get a hang over with Vodka. It's purity helps (it's really just water and alcohol flavoured with spuds). Plus, it's concentration allows the body to clear it out faster.

What have you colonials done with our beautiful measuring system we gave you? "I'm off down the pub for a few 20oz's" just doesn't work. Are you drinking beer or eating cake?
The correct terminology for beer measurment is of course 'a large one'.
In all seriousness this sounds like a great place run by people with an eye for the authentic, I think I'd feel right at home there.

I lost my taste for beer while going to school in St. Paul, MN. Too many hipsters obsessed with the local micro-brews, and far too willing to mock those who didn't share their preferences (invariably EPA or IPA). The whole thing left a sour taste in my mouth which, to this day, reflects itself in any hoppy concoction I might be drawn to consume.

I think this tendency is overrated, and isn’t anything inherent in American media consumers. It’s more due to market factors, mostly the success of FOX news and the (mostly failed) attempts by the left to get their equivalent sources.
In the UK you’ve got papers that are identified with one political view or another. Ignoring the tabloids and looking at just the broadsheets you’ve got The Guardian and The Times.
I’m not sure you can then make the conclusion that Englishmen only want to hear their own side, can you?
