I don't want to sound like a "Cliff Claven" (know it all) , but the model Huey you got is either a C or M model. It was the predecessor till the Cobra production became more mainstream. D & H & later models were a little longer, & no weapon system. C & M models had a heavier electrical system & an auxiliary hydraulic system to the weapons & flight controls called SCAS. (used to conpensate for weapons recoil) Anyway on to what I realy wanted to say, later model Cobra's had a chin turret w/a 3 barrel 20mm cannon. I have a 1/48 scale model of it, it's an S model Cobra. Maybe you can modify it for your Hueys? Not sure if that model is still in production I think it's by Monogram.

I'm so tempted so swipe this idea dude!

I think it would be better to alter or "40K" them up a bit though, maybe swap the rotor for engines or fans?

That series of photos is like a crazy action sequence of building a model.

Is the grenade launcher those spike things? I think they are pitot tubes or mounting for aerials or something.

See this site... http://www.aircav.com/huey/uh1.html

Of course you can easily put a gun in the nose.

Oh right.

I should use the grenade launcher thing and put a fatter barrel on it made from drilled out plastic rod. Imperial weapons are oversized compared to the scale.

BTW you may find it best to leave the side doors off the helicopters. I always did for my Vietnam slicks. It was often done historically and saves some painting.

they are looking good. are you planning to have 10 man squads in each? or two huey's for each 10 man squad.

It'll be dramatic on the table top

do you mean have the doors open or dont even bother glueing them on the model?

the old g launcher sounds like a good idea, i suppose with maybe a multi laser/lascannon barrel instead of that pathetic looking grenade launcher

im planning on 1 chopper per 10 man squad

Don't even put the side doors on the model. The pilot doors are best left on. The side doors get in the way if you have door gunners.

You can easily build assault cannons from a bundle of seven 2mm plastic rods. Drill out the barrels with a 1mm pin drill and pop a 2mm rivet head on the middle.

If the IG don't have assault cannons it can 'count as' something else.

sounds like an epic idea youve been a massive help
did they actually remove the doors to accomodate door gunners in nam?

also i might run a few cobras as vultures

As for the side doors they, slide back on tracks that wrap around the outside of the fuselage & can be pinned against the back wall. Our M60s were mounted on brackets that attached to lugs that came out of the edge of the floor. Maybe there's an idea for in that for you?

The side doors were removable. While the gun mount could be put on as well as the door, the door obviously had to be slid open to let the gunner shoot. The doors were often removed to save weight.

My opinion is, from a practical wargaming perspective, the doors are extra clutter to assemble, paint and keep from breaking off by handling. So I always used to take the doors off my 1/72 scale choppers.

You can always assemble a model with them and remove the doors later if you like.

OK EVERYONE CALM DOWN! I THINK THOSE ARE FINGERS!
really tho, your huey is looking good so far. cool idea of using them BTW.
and to note on the scale war going on, i think it really depends on what your doing on the scale. a tank or a as is ork trukk id go a little bigger, simply because the 1/48 scale is a lil small for that application

Love the pics! Made me a bit nostalgic- I had the same huey kit (well looks the same anyway) back in the nineties, and I converted it for my blood axe kommandos. I spent ages on it but never finished it - then I lost it. I still hope that one day my mum'll find it in the loft or something.
