Pretty good analysis. The cadians are great for being so generic, it's true. The catachans just seem like a very strange choice to keep going on with now. I was hoping they'd use this as a chance to make a kit for greatcoated gaurd. I guess if I ever come into money I can go for some metal steel legion.

the catachans are rather lame, unless your in to that rambo thing. Im always a fan of anyone reading the infantrymans uplifting primer though. Looks like there are some good bits for scratchbuilding in the whole lot. I know this is off topic, but has anyone seen photos of the new tanks?

I think that, with the exception of the helmets, Cadians look cool. So that leaves the heads as a problem.

I like the catachans. Greatcoat guard honestly don't do a lot for me. Trenchcoats are bad combat attire. They aren't any worse than vests and bandannas but I love predator, and a vietnam-esque army would be quite cool. You could also very easily create an african/middle eastern militia force with the catachan figures with a simple color swap (greens for desert grays and tans).

These are so hot. Any other new sweet pictures? I think that Cadian Command Squad is pretty close to how each of mine is going to look.

I hear ya, and I think if they could go back in time GW would replace plastic catachans with plastic greatcoat guard, but I think when they made the decisions they made both Catachans and Cadians were relatively wise choices. Catachan plastics were 98/99, and IIRC catachans were the most popular of the old metal ranges (they still show up more than anything on eBay, but that may be due to their continued popularity in the plastic era) and fit with the (quickly aborted) plan to release sub-codices for different battle field types. The Steel Legion had yet to be released, and while valhallans were popular, Catachans were more so and probably easier to stamp out. The major problem with the catachans, outside of their inherent sillyness, is that they were a rare misfire, joining DE warriors as some of the only plastic kits that are now too ugly to use.

Flashing forward five years, the decision to green light cadians over greatcoat is a bit murkier, but that IG book is loved by one and all for it's insane flexibility with regard to doctrines. While Greatcoat guard would look sweet, it would be fair harder to use them as drop troops, or light infantry, or even in many terrain sets. You can put a cadian model in jungle, urban, wastes, desert, or even ice camo, but Great coats are a bit more limited.

Essentially, I think they figured that Cadians would have the widest appeal, while Great Coat guard would have the deepest, and they went for a broader appeal. I collect Praetorians, so I've watched the plastics come out and I've been utterly unimpressed, so I know how you feel.

Really? I've always really liked the DE warriors.. I guess I might be alone in this tho!

Well, there's no accounting for taste, and everybody gets to pick what they like. For example, I don't think the old Legion of the Damned are all that hot, but I'm a fan of the 2nd ed Crab Claw Daemonettes.

Very few plastic kits have been as reviled as the DE Warriors and the Catachans. More often you get a kit like the Cadians: bland and oddly sculpted, but something very few people can really hate too badly.

One big note on the catachan/greatcoat conflict: GW doesn't admit mistakes. Normally, a range gets one major set of plastics. In no other area does an identical unit from a single codex have two plastic kits, except for IG troopers. In 2nd edition there were many different "regiments" of guard, but those essentially made up for the very low diversity of actual units the IG had compared to say, Orks or Eldar. To drop plastic catachans entirely would essentially force GW to admit that they made a mistake in making them, while not supporting them further would piss off everybody that bought catachans. GW knew they couldn't make Catachans work, but couldn't chuck them, so they ended up with the current solution of having two parallel ranges in plastic, neither of which is anywhere near complete. To add a third one unto there would bog GWs ability to actually modernize the IG line down into impossibility.

Frankly, Instead of Greatcoat guard, I'd rather see the Catachan command sprue have been a Hardened Veteran Sprue, or a Cadian Rough Rider sprue, or even the long awaited plastic stormtroopers.

The 1st multi-part Chaos warriors were literally the most awful plastic set ever. Really. Only Nagash himself was fit to stand at the fore of an army of those abominations.

And to another poster, the cadian lieutenant is wearing a cadian chest piece/body armor/flak jacket, not an "armored tanktop".

See, now I actually have some affection for the old Chaos Warriors. The new ones are infinitely superior in terms of detail, but I liked the old ones for three reasons: they fit with the old metals better, they are easier and more interesting to convert, and they look more corrupt and twisted. the new Chaos warriors look more like grim superhuman warriors than like devotees to chaos. YMMV.

The old chaos plastics are in the fairly small club of "plastic multi-part kits that were replaced by a new plastic kit." The RT era plastics were either replaced by metal/plastic hybrids (marines, Orks), by metals alone (IG) or were simply forgotten (squats). There have been plenty of single pose plastics that were replaced (Guardians, slugga boys, marines, even storm troopers), but I think we can all agree that the mono-pose years were a dark time.

I think that Rhino, Razorback, Ork Warbikes, Trukks, and Battlewagon are the only 40k multi-par kits that were directly replaced by a new plastic kit, and the Landraider and Battlewagon went OOP for long stretches.

In fantasy, of course, there has been a bit more turnaround, with multiple iterations of Empire Soldiers, Night Goblins, Dwarf Warriors, Skeletons, Dragons, and the Chaos Warriors all being replaced.

Gotta say that while the Catachan command squad doesn't look stellar, it's much. much better than the old rank and file plastics. The arms are slightly less ridiculous, and the heads are downright nifty. These will make great scavenge parts for a naval ratings unit, Imunda figs, Dark Heresy minis, etc. etc. In fact, both command kits look like a must-have for converters that deal with any human army.

And the Catachan head with facemask will be very useful in Chaos forces...

Infinity: Way, way better than 40K and more affordable to boot!

Those are some great looking mini's and they will fit in quite nicely with my other 5 or 6 hundred.

I'm not all to jazzed about seeing 10 guys per box. Call me spoiled, but I chowed down hard when they were 16 and 20 per box, so the newer boxes will probibly be one or two for the bits.

Guard need to stay in boxes of 16 or 20. 10? Pfft. Please, is that some kind of joke?

Lets see some LATD rules, please. Its high time we start seriously talking about some traitor guard units. All of these new guys are really making it hard for me to stay peeved at GW.

Great job on those minis, rambobo's or not.

You know, I'm almost tempted to make myself about half a dozen leg posses with long coats just to see how cadians with long coats would look, as I like the commander alot.....

If it were not for the 4 other projects I've already got on the go that is! :-)

My comments are my own, and mine own alone. If you have any complaints, please report to Mr Spanky who will take them down for you.....

So are the Standard bearer and medic going to be an "automatic" upgrade for the command squad, like the apothecary for the space marine command squad granting feel no pain and rerolls for morale checks. I've also thought it would be cool that if you take the master-vox it would extend the the Officers leadership bonus from 12" to 18". I like that the idea of the vox casters granting a reroll to morale.

Greatcoats are easy to greenstuff. I think that's the only reason they never mass produced them really. People can simply buy Cadians, swap the heads, greenstuff the coat and BICKITY-BAM YO! Death Korps or Valhallans or Mordians or even Praetorians. The combat tunic is the same, just change the heads and paint them however you like. I'm working on converting 300+ Cadians into Krieg troops just because I like the armor better. It's really just up to the player to decide what they want to do. Personally, I'm going to buy two of the Catachan set and 4 or 5 of the Cadian. Might as well give my officers a more human feel.

Orks are like those neighbor children who aren't invited to your parties and they come right in anyway.

I wish this was true but i cant remember the last time I saw a African militia roid raging in the back of a technical all wearing beaters, "low tech" troops do not mean they are guidos.

I wish the models were that versatile because then my army would be a peoples revolution not Uncle Sams bad ass's .

Heh heh, I was on the ork wagon since end of second ed, but I might (depending on how some planned converty stuff works out) join the ranks of the guard soon enough. They've always been my second favourite faction.

I'm in the process of purchasing like 60 something British Zulu soldiers to convert to Praetorians for the new codex...I'm definitely looking forward to it!

P.S. Anyone have any spare Praetorian hw teams that they'd like to trade for/sell?
