Looking good! I like your conversions! One thing that doesn't jive with me is the melta guns with the knives pointing down. I think cutting a chainsword down and putting it on bayonette style might look better and definatly feel more khorney to me.

Either way, good luck with the painting! Some things I consider when painting:

What will the overall scheme look like: throwing colors together randomly can have some odd looks. I try to look at other models and find color combos that I like before starting. If you see it on another model and the colors jive together chances are they will work out on your models in whatever way you decide to incorperate them.

Patience is key. If you are having trouble skip details for the moment and work on nice clean base colors. A model with clean base colors is much better than an overdone model with poor attempts at details. You can always come back and flesh them out when you have more of the army under your belt.

Espescially for chaos, prime black and when painting leave black in recesses and area seperations. This will help with the color palette as well as adding depth without very much effort.

When you are ready to move forward, using washes and drybrushing are two of the easiest techniques to learn and implement quickly for good effect.

Basing: You can get good basing a variety of ways but here is a quick and uber simple one that works for me. Glue a mix of gravel(can get from any hobbey or train store) to the base before priming. If you prime black, you're all set, paint it black if you primed grey or white. Drybrush white lightly across the gravel to bring out the edges of the gravel. Glue small patches of static grass(available where you get your mini's) in two or three clumps on the base. This creates a detailed gravel with patches of grass base that looks good and takes very little time/effort/skill to achieve. My tzeentch has a plan thread has several examples of this if you want to see it. The same technique works with painting the gravel dark brown and using a lighter brown highlight if you want a more earthy base scheme(but I think the black and white contrasts better with the rich reds of the armor for zerkers etc).

Hopefully I'll get a chance to get down and see your progress one of these days!

Thanks Meph. I haven't been too worried about painting details thus far. In fact, the only colors I have are the ones I wanted to use as core colors. I do plan to use black as the primer color form now on, but unfortunately, all my berzerkers were primed white long ago. But that should be fine, because I'm only really going for a three color standard for my basic troops. By the time I'm done with them, I'll hopefully be a lot better at painting, and will have an easier time tackling my converted models.

My original intent for basing was pretty close to your suggestion. I had a bag of modelling sand which I misplaced, but I planned to do basically what you suggested, though I hadn't thought about grass just yet.

At this point, my priority is on getting models built and converted, as conversions are my favorite aspect of the hobby, and I want to have a fieldable 1500 point force. Luckily, I picke dup a Land Raider on Thursday, and it is battle ready (though I am waiting on some bits to make it look considerably more interesting). Once that and my raptors are ready (also waiting on bits), I'll just need three rhinos before the painting can commence.

As for the meltagun bayonets, I did consider chainsword blades as bayonets, but they just sort of overwhelmed the head of the meltagun with how thick they are. I am considering dropping the blades entirely in favor of some other detail, but I haven't thought of a good alternative yet.

Well, I haven't had any updates lately, but I'm working on it. I purchased and assembled a land raider, and the bitz I ordered for converting it should arrive soon. And this is why I am posting. I plan to eventually have three Land Raiders for the army, and each will have a name and a theme to go with it. The one I have already purchased will be Slaughter, with Wrath and Hatred to follow.

Each of the converted Raiders will have an appearance that relates to their name. I have a pretty good idea for Slaughter, and I will hopefully have pictures up sometime next week. In the meantime, I would love suggestions on how to convert up Land Raiders that are the personification of Wrath and Hatred. For Wrath, I was considering a mutated hull, so that it looks like Bloodletters are clawing their way out of the vehicle (purely cosmetic, of course). Hatred is a little trickier, but I was thinking about giving it a heavy, industrial look with lots of extra armor and enlarged smokestacks.

---

Furthermore, next week should be a flurry of activity, as I have a 2000 point RTT on the 28th. My shopping list includes three rhinos, a Land Raider, and Kharn the Betrayer, in addition to some extra space marine models to flesh out the chosen (all converted with tabards and possibly fancy helmets to fit in). Go check out my army list in the appropriate forum and let me know what you think!

Obviously, the army won't be painted, but most of my opponents armies are unpainted as well, and hopefully everything that isn't still in the conversion process will be primed at the very least.
