You should play through the first games single player it isn't that horrible, plus the Force Commander has a pretty good voice actor. You should never play Soulstorm at all any way, it is one of the few things in my life I regret buying.

I played through a bit of the original game's Single Player, but I got tired of the gameplay. And of the AI cheating. I tolerated Dawn of War because it was 40K - removing 40K just makes it a Starcraft or Age of Empires clone with the way you build units, upgrade everything from scratch in every mission (we forgot how to make powerfists so let's research them again!) and just the general 'feel' of it. Dark Crusade was more fun as the missions meant something. They were still very same-y, but at least winning something got me something, and I could lose it over time. Plus the Wargear thing kept me interested. I've only played Soulstorm for a bit, and aside from the horrid coding that overheats my 3D card and causes the computer to freeze, the only real flaws I could find were: 1. The campaign was just Dark Crusade with a different skin. 2. Aircraft are gak. Beyond that I don't know what else you could consider to be wrong with it except for balance problems, but no DoW game is innocent of that. And I played DoWII for the first time yesterday as a friend of mine just got it. Now that's a great game. Chaos Gate in real-time, which is fantastic.

I see your point on DOW 1, I just really liked the story for some reason and it makes me sad end slightly that DOW 2 doesn't pick up right after, from what I hear.
Dark Crusade was definitely better game play wise, and the Wargear thing was pretty cool.
I didn't like Soulstorm because of the way Meltaguns worked, the gak fusion blasters, SoBs being better than Space Marine, lack of over all polish (example: The DP wargear option says 'Turns Eliphas the Inheritor into a Daemon Prince', the over all fan fiction feel of it, people on a back water world instantly being able to tell that the red colored Rhino's were from the Blood Ravens. Things like that just made it unplayable, and the raping of computers.
I'm hoping to be able to get DoWII soon, just gotta get a better, nonwork related computer.
Forgive me but what is Chaos Gate? Turn based Strategy like Panzer General?

No, the 40K Panzer General game was called 'Rites of War', and the less said about that, the better.
Chaos Gate was a turn-based Squad-based tactical game. You had 3 squads and up to 5 characters (Captain, Chaplain, Libby, Apothecary, Techmarine - collectivley known as 'Grenade Mules') and played across many missions fighting Word Bearer Space Marines w/Berzerker, Cultist, and Khornate & Tzeentch Daemonic Support. You could arm guys indivudually, grenades, ammo, guns, equipment like medi-packs and scanners. There were the three main squad types plus Terminator squads. Everyone got better as time went on during missions, Librarians could learn new powers (and every 2nd Ed power was in there). You'd find special equipment like the 'Reaper' Power Axe and the 'Conciliator' Power Sword. Marines would get rewards during missions, including Terminator Honours, which allowed you to put your best guys into the Terminator Squad (they all had names and could be swapped around between squads).
It was great fun. A little buggy, but great fun. There were vehicles, but they were as buggy as hell. I did kill a Chaos Pred with a Vortex grenade and nearly crash the game!
DoWII is that, but realtime, and with an expanded way of doing options.

I always felt cheated that Warp Spiders were both so good, and looked cool, in Dark Crusade. It was like bizzaro-world.
As another nostalgic aside, did anyone else play Final Liberation?

Could you ever get Knights Paladins? I could only take them if I played about with the Reserves and I always lost out on points that way...and Lifta Droppas were the most fun thing ever! Pity they got nerfed in the Apocalypse book (though when it was released Glancing Hits could still destroy)
I'd play Final Liberation now if I knew where it was. It's campaign had more replayability than DoW, even though there were just Orks and Imperials. We should petition THQ for a FLib2, using DoW quality graphics, and the brand name for better sales.

I loved Final Liberation too, I went back to it recently though and it hasn't aged well.
The Imperial Guard Captain seems a popular choice further 'proof' to me that GW were fools for not making a model.

The Final Lib Commissar would be a great model...can you add to an already posted poll? I'd vote for him.

It was Commissar Holt right? He was great. I love the way he dismissed the Ultramarines as though they were this insignificant insect annoying him.
"Goodbye Captain," Holt siad without even looking at the Marine.

That game sounds pretty awesome, if I could find a copy on the net I'd get it just to take it for a spin.
If DoWII can equal the awesome that Chaos Gate must have been, than its a must have.

Seriously... why ain't their some DoW models from GW? They would sell like CRAZY me thinks!
- The space marine commander from the first DoW, complete with thunder hammer. He would be a hot model to buy
- The XV 25 battlesuit with LOTS of weapons and made of plastic would be a Tau's dream come true ^_^
- The imperal guard general with the two lightning claws. Woot Woot
Those 3 would be the best sellers. If a GW employee is here, please consider those three!

I still have my copies of both Final Liberation and Chaos Gate. I played some Chaos Gate in December for nostalgia and still love it. I never got to try out the multiplayer where you can play as Chaos, though.
Also, I don't know if it was official or not(I think it was, I remember finding it on the official site), but there was an expansion for Final Liberation that put Chaos in the game, but I could never get it to work.

The Chaos expansion was fan made, and as far as I know it was never complete. The only official 'expansion' was a patch that added Land Raiders to the game... and boy were they fun!!!
