If you don't like the looks of an army you probably won't be able to push through the tedious aprts of painting (like when you realize at some point you've got to start cranking through 20 rank & file marines, 60 gaunts, 80 Ork Boyz, etc.)

Effectiveness will come and go. Wait long enough (unless you're into Dark Eldar) and a new Codex will come out and you'll find your army is suddenly similar, but different. Expect to want to add a new unit or two and retool a few others (change squad size, new commanders, etc.).

yeah i think ill do some research about the armies i wanna start (read some battle reports etc and tactica)

(if you still have some stories or a reason why you collected an army feel free to post it)

For me I have owned several 40k Armies and only 1 fantasy army

For the Armies I activly play
IG- As a solider myself I can relate to these poor sods (and I am a bit of a tread head)
CSM- Just to be diffrent in my gaming group (to many SM players)
Necrons- All fluff here I love the Cold Hard Science approcah (just wish they had a new codex)
Tau - My first 40k army and I like the look and feel of the army just never commited myself to collect them further

In Fantasy I own the Dark Elves with themits just Fluff and looks. I lose all the time but I look good doing it.

-Dark Elves (first love), really only picked because it was the one army any of my friends didnt play, but grew to absolutely love them.
-Empire, Saw all the awesome Collectors models and got the inspiration to make an extremely unique looking army, my favorite to field, just need to paint...
-Mounted Chaos, wanted an army completely different than anything else I played, fast and tons of magic, plus the new Knights and Horsemen are beautiful models.

-Chaos Marines, entered an Iron painter and wanted something that seemed fun to paint and looked good (Alpha Legion)
-Regular Marines. It's possible to take 6 dreads? Hell yes. Fun army, but not always effective

i think i made my decision i think im gonna play orks after i saw redbeard's army profile and the blog about adepticon (loved the pic where he was moving his 200 orks and the space marine player had like 30 models on the board XD)

I started my Ultramarines back in the day when they were the unspecial marines. Everyone else was getting awesome special rules and going all-Terminators or Assault marines, but I liked the idea of the basic Tacticals of the basic SM chapter holding the line against a galaxy gone mad.

I held off starting an IG force until the release of the plastic Cadians, even though I'd been itching to start a mechanised force since the release of Codex: Armageddon. Chimeras are the awesomest vehicle in 40k, and I can't get enough of them.

Necrons were my first. I was hanging out with a couple guys where I work, who kept talking about 40k. I decided on necrons (in 4th ed) because they sounded simple to learn, reasonably forgiving, and reasonably inexpensive - in case I didn't like it.

Daemons are my secondary, started them when the books hit the shelves. I liked the idea of something that was more assault capable, and very much the idea of being able to get another 40k army that would let me dabble in fantasy without even more cash outlay.

We're just getting into 40K and we chose SM simply because it looked like it might be the least expensive (AOBR) to start with and it looked like it had some of the biggest variety of units in it. It doesn't hurt that there is an updated 5th ed codex for it as well and there seems to be a pretty good overall balance in the army which allows newbies like us to experiment with different play styles to get a feel for the game.

I got into Space Wolves because I liked the look of a Marine army as a good base to learn the game from, but I wasn't a fan of any of the vanilla chapters. I love the Norse flavor a Wolf army has, and the fact that they're excellent assault troops doesn't hurt. Outdated codex? Meh. That's still 850,000 attacks from a pack of Blood Claws, offense or defense! Werewolf Space Vikings for the win!

Ah I remember it well! Going into my FLGS and seeing it across the room. There, that huge heavy box with its Marines in power armor battling orcs, in space! That second edition boxed set went home with me that day. I've been a marine player ever since. Just something about the power armor really appeals to me. And I always have some orcs around because they are just too cool to get rid of.

I picked up a bunch of cadian metals when they were released too and have them waiting in the wings to get painted up someday.

For fantasy I tried Lizardmen when they first came out but really didnt catch on like I had with the marines. Now I'm starting an Empire force since I really like the variety of units they can field and the look of the army as a whole.

I usualy find that a random idea lodges itself in my head, and won't go until I've had a crack at realising it.

Current army for Fantasy is Savage Orcs. Always fancied an entire army of these guys, mainly because I like their background description, essentially being a bunch of Sun addled nutters.

Was always put off by the price tag though. Not a cheap army to collect at £50 per regiment! Then I saw a conversion of a Wyvern made from the High Elf Dragon. Thinking about Savage Orcs, I checked my book and noticed Savage Orc Warbosses could now ride one.

So I started thinking about how fun that could be to use on the field (Frenzied Flying Creatures are a laugh!) and then to the conversion. Wyvern itself was a simple enough affair, being mainly a head and tail swap. I then decided that being Frenzied, the Warboss would be likely to leap off his charge at the first sighting of the enemy, so to counter this, I would have him strapped in underneath. Bounced the idea around in my head a bit more, but again found the price tag somewhat prohibitive.

Then for my Birthday last year, received the High Elf Dragon kit from my then employer. Armed with this, and the £30 knocked off the pricetag, there was no going back. Procured a Wyvern (typically not long after the Bitz were no longer available) and the plastic Warboss. Conversion worked better than I could have hoped, paintjob turned out far better than my normal attempts, so it seemed meant to be.

And thats how I got stuck on the Green Road!

I love the idea of using unreliable technology that just might be the most powerful in the universe. It is, of course, equally likely to kill you. The dedication revealed by an Ork's suicidal devotion to killing the enemy warms my heart, especially since it is not driven by hatred.

This is my third time back with 40K!

I chose space marines because of one fact!

If you build a basic space marine army, I.e. Devastator Squads, Tac Squads, Assault Squads, Terminators, and Tanks. Your army will be playable from now till Doomsday!
Other than adding a few models I have had to purchase very little to resurrect my space marine army from its 3rd edition days!

Oh well I guess I'll be the cheap guy!

In your base, ignoring your logic.

I saw the steel legion and they looked cool. I saw the cadians and they also looked good, went with the most available model. I love the way I can easily just make fluff up for IG and the tanks definitely helped.

"I..I have one final request"
Altharius leaned close to listen, tears welling in his once bright eyes.
"make sure th..they put my soulstone in a tank... it'll be... real fethin' cool"
"Yes, you're gonna be the most fethin' cool tank!!" burning hot tears streaked down Altharius's face, as he held his brother's soul in his grasp.

In ye olden days of the 1990's, I saw GW's booth at Comic-Con San Diego, where I got that old starter kit with the SM and Dark Eldar. In fact, it makes up most of my bitz box now. After a few years of modeling and painting those on-and-off, I had a look around GW's website and just fell in love with the Tyranids. I don't know what clicked at first, but...man, they're just way too awesome. So I picked up a Battleforce, a Zoanthrope, a Biovore, another Zoanthrope...it just started building up.

I'm thinking of starting a second army, though. Probably Orks.

The Tau caught my eye for two reasons, first the idea of a coalition fighting together in a universe where it is primarily "my species and no other" and the kroot, XV8's and hammerhead models. When the expansion came with the new codex, the sky ray, vespid, and piranha's also became models that I loved the look of.
I also like the idea of the young upstarts going around and showing the older races that they are not the only powers. That and the fluff emphasis on ranged combat over melee. Fits my general view of combat. Granted I always find it hilarious to charge gun drones in cqc.

My first army was Tau because they came out while I was thinking about starting warhammer with some friends and they were somewhat "normal" compared to the grimdark overdose that I saw in the 3rd ed rulebook. Then I realized that I really didn't like the style, and switched to Iron Warriors to make a gritty, siege based army. When the new chaos book came out, I switched over to my Imperial Guard with the goal again of making a trench warfare/siege army.

I started in second edition and chose CSM because I liked their models and fluff over all the armies. I also liked their ability to mix and match different units and the general character each unit had. The other armies at the time just didn't appeal to me at the time.

Upon 3rd edition coming out, I expanded my army substantially because of the drastic rules change between 2nd and 3rd edition. When 3.5 came out I expanded my Khorne units enough to be able to field a full Worldeater army.

4th edition was minor tweaking of my Undivided and Khorne armies. I haven't decided what I want to do with 5th, some days e-Bay, some days something completely new.

I started 40K in third edition when Tyranids were being redone. I really liked the modeling aspect of the hobby and liked the ability to convert my Gaunts up with special glands and whatever. When I found them to be a little unsatisfying in the painting aspect, I stumbled on the Ork codex. I read a little about Deathskullz and haven't looked back since.

I chose SM because they are cost effective (in real life i mean... you don't have to buy a lot of models to have a decent army).

I switched my chapter from Red Templar (vanilla) to a Blood Templar (Blood Angels) list because after my first few competitive games, I got massacared in assaults a lot, so I looked into some more assault oriented SM forces. I liked the fluff for BA (sanguinius fan), so I went with them. The paint job was easy enough to modify, and the codex was free so I didn't have to buy another.

Having kids is expensive you know! I'm not made of money.
