after that wanted to do 40k (after i saw some urban boards) and bought an tau army book a week later i asked if i could trade it against an eldar army book ( the shop owner said my book was in a good condition and because he played eldar he allowed me to trade it)
and after i bought some guardians and a autarch im thinking to start with chaos, orks or red templars SM) so how did you choose the army your gaming with

I started for the second time (the first time was when I was about 11, ugh) with Tau, because they seemed cool and awesome. After a while, I was less enthralled with them, and so picked a Tyranid battleforce, because they seemed cool and awesome. After another while, I was getting into the idea of the kill-team game in the 4th Ed rulebook, and so I picked up some Imperial Guard in order to help realise the cool and awesome ideas for it I had. And after yet another while, I found that Terminators seemed cool and awesome, so I picked up some regular, some assault, and half a Black Reach box.

And that's the story of how I came to have models from four different armies.

seems like you have the same problem as me you see a cool mini, hear a cool idea or read some lore about an army and want to start with their army

Orks: Made for hittin' stuff 'till it don't move no more. Plus I like their look and they are easy to paint.

Vampire Counts: I like magic and rock hard heroes. Vampires combine these two things, usually on the same model.

Well, the only two I have that are at army strength is the Tau and Nids. I rarely play games - it's all at modelling and painting for me. But yeah, coolness is what attracts me, not game strength.

Tau - first army, i saw a guy whip BA with them and I really enjoyed look

DA - really enjoyed the look of the Vets, so I started by picking up a pack of Vets, army slowly expanded from there

Orks - first 40k army I ever saw, love the new conversion potentail, strong lists, and well their orks, whats not to like.

Now that I have 3 armies I am trying to finish them all before I start another one. However since I enjoy the modeling/painting aspect as much as the game I have a list of models/units I will get and paint simply because they look cool.

I started with Orks (10 years ago) because I love putting together vehicles and the modeling possibilities with Orks is just too great to pass up.

However soon after Orks were released the dreaded BA and SW codexs came out and were handing me my ass. So I wanted to do something in power armor just to play on an even field, but not marines so I started looking at chaos. It also had awesome modeling possibilities.

However, just before I went whole hog down the path of Chaos the advance shots of the new Tau race were released. The first thing I saw was the Hammerhead. Chaos immediately got put on hold.

Well, after dinking around with Tau for a while, I still wanted to get back into my Chaos project because I felt I had some really good ideas for vehicles. Then just before the path of Nurgle hit, the advance pics of the (now out of print) metal deamonetts and defiler were released. Hellooooooo Slannesh. Papa Nurgle got dumped, and I made a completely awesome fully converted Emperor's Children army (which was made useless when the newest chaos codex came out).

Thus my road down 40k and why I chose the armies that I did.

See pics of my Orks, Tau, Emperor's Children, Necrons, Space Wolves, and Dark Eldar here:

I love the Orks, because da green 'uns are da biggest and da stongest! Some of the models are really funny and I love their rag-tag look. And I love that their weapons have as good a chance of blowing me up as it does the enemy! I think it was last month's WD, where they had that huge-ass Apocalypse game with the 9 Stompas, where the Orks' meteorite weapon misfired so badly that it landed about 2 feet OFF THE TABLE! I love the randomness of 'em all...

Basically, I recommend finding an army you like then doing some research on their effectiveness/army building.

If you don't like the looks of an army you probably won't be able to push through the tedious aprts of painting (like when you realize at some point you've got to start cranking through 20 rank & file marines, 60 gaunts, 80 Ork Boyz, etc.)

Effectiveness will come and go. Wait long enough (unless you're into Dark Eldar) and a new Codex will come out and you'll find your army is suddenly similar, but different. Expect to want to add a new unit or two and retool a few others (change squad size, new commanders, etc.).

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.
Play the games that make you happy.

Well, I got in in my head that I wanted to do at least a company of troops from each of the 1000 marine chapters. So far I've gotten as far along as #1

Seriously - I'm one of those that really likes the look of the beakie marines and have ever since I cut out the paper markers for "The Farm" from the old RT book. Dark Angels sort of just clicked while I was reading about the chapters.

I started getting interested in Nids after Space Hulk and I play Iyanden because one of these editions they are finally going to become THE Eldar build. Really, I think... I hope...

Studying abroad in Jerusalem. Soon to return to Utah.

Why did I start imperial guard? Well, it wasn't because I like having tough as nails troops that shake mortal blows off their gleaming ceramite breatplates. It wasn't for the immortal gods of war that wade into swirling melees of death, laughing as they harvest and devour the souls of the weak. It wasn't for unstoppable killy-death machines that just smile as lascannons bounce off their hulls, then throw five warriors into a swarm of apostates to purify them with bolter and chainsword.

I started IG because they're the downtrodden, underrated, unappreciated conscripts thrown ill-equipped and poorly lead into the jaws of enemies that wield sorcery, demonic legions, unfathomable technology, and unstoppable numbers. And sometimes, if you play your cards right, they WIN.

It makes me happy when my lasgun-toting dogfaces can dig some foxholes on their homeworld and make a defiant stand against an entire universe bent on their destruction and damnation.

IG forever.

I pick an army based on how cool I think the models look and how cool my idea for the models is I never really take how the army plays into consideration till much later, if I like the models I'll like playing with them no matter what the rules say

I started with genestealer cultist because I liked the imagery of the little guy, the imperial citicen, together with the slimy alien fighting against the opressors.

Then I started a spacemarine army when they got new good looking plastic models. I really like to rebuild my stuff and the spacemarines were one of the first armies to get a clean and good looking plastic set in many parts in third edition. Or at least that's how I remember it.

I started in second edition, and I picked space marines because they came in the starter and I hated the ork models. I loved the ork fluff though, so I used to collect any decent models I saw. When 3rd came out I really liked the changes to the army so I switched over, and once the Brian Nelson plastics came out it was all over for me. I dumped my marines. After a good few years of playing with Orks, I got fed up of no updates. I also had an idea for a cool theme and conversion that would allow me to make plague marines on the cheap, so I built a plague marine army for the old 4th edition codex. Those are still my two 40K armys. I've toyed with Tau or Daemons or Podding marines for a change of playstyle, but usually decided I'd rather buy LOTR/Warmachine than more 40K.

For fantasy it was Lizardmen first because they came in the starter, Orcs second because I loved the minis, Beasts of Chaos third because I've always loved the fluff and I loved the art in the newest book and the idea of an all skirmishing army really appealed to me. I started Dwarves because I love the fluff but dumped them because I hate the models and the playstyle.

For LOTR it was Evil because Evil has all the best models, except the fugly goblin drum, bat swarms and uruk hai shaman.

Warmachine it was Cygnar for a change of pace, and Hordes it was Trolls cos I love the models.

I started because a friend of mine had a huge chaos army and I wanted an excuse to paint minis. I picked Tau because I liked their look and it worked out well because it turned out that I knew three people who had picked up Tau and abandoned them. I ended up getting over 2000 points of Tau for free.

I started Daemons because I wanted an army I could showcase and they had just come out at the time. Also, I liked the idea of doing an army in crazy colors and Daemons lend themselves well to looking good in bizarre pallets.

(Old Man)

Back in my day there weren't no difference between an Ultramarine or a Blood Angel or a Salamander or a Space Wolf 'sides their colour!

*spits*

So I's started Ultramarines 'cause blue's me favourite colour an' me friends all 'ad Blood Angels already.

(/Old Man)

Yeah, I started Ultramarines because I like blue. It's that simple. I started Tyranids because they came with the Tyranid Attack boxed set and I thought Genestealers and Warriors were cool.

I started Guard when the (metal) Cadians were first released, although I did buy a Leman Russ the moment it came out - it was the coolest tank they made at the time, and considering that they only made 4 other tanks at the time (Rhino, Razorback, Pred, Land Raider), that wasn't much of a surprise.

I started Chaos even though I didn't want to. I swore that three armies was enough and I wasn't going to do a fourth. That ended when the monolithic tome that was the 2nd Ed Chaos Codex came out. The biggest Codex they had made to date, it was too hard to resist. So I started Chaos.

I bought a Necron army over a year ago as a way of teaching myself to paint. I almost have a painted army!!!

During this period I've managed to also pick up a World Eater army, a Deathguard army, a Lost & The Damned army, a Deathwatch army, and a full Inquisitorial army (all Inquisitorial, no GK or SoBs). I've probably got close to 100,000 points worth of stuff now.

Imperial Guard, If any of you have read the novel "15 Hours", that's why.

Well i decided to start my dark eldar army because a friend of mine was selling his for a ridiculously low price (rightly so, it took me ages to fix em up!) and well i needed a change from the attrition style of play that I use with my Guardsmen.

In fantasy, I started WoC because i enjoyed T4 , but really the simple fact is the artwork and fluff for them is so extensive that anyone can find something they like (assuming of course you like chaotic things )

hm, i was with my buddy at a hobbytown, looking at the models, wishing the place carried privateer press stuff, and just sort of impulse purchased a box of ork bikers for something different to paint (and they were on sale)
then i picked up a box of boys, looked through the codex, figured i'd give the game a try and split a black reach box with guy.

so yea, i started orks because i was bored and had some spare cash on me

I started a Space Marines because they looked interesting, are very customizable and most importantly I don't need to build a lot of them. (There, I said it)

Then I started doing IG becaue of a series of whims. After seeing the new Navy Working Uniform (that blue digital camo thing) I knew I had to make models wearing it. After building a squad of Naval Infantry (identical to regular infantry but in blue!) lead by a Chief wielding a chain-cutlass (because I couldn't make a coffe mug to stick in his hand) I really wanted to paint a piece of 'Imperial Navy' armor in a WWI / WWII dazzle paint scheme. My shop was out of Chimeras so I built a Hellhound. Named it Robert Johnson because I've always wanted a Hellhound named after the bluesman.
Then I did a Leman Russ covered in junk and commanded by Oddball from Kelly's Heroes.

I also dabble in sisters of battle just because. I'm thinking of playing all these diverse elements as one big Apocalypse army under the name Joint Task Force Kill.

Though in the end based on how I play I probably should have been Tau. Oh well too late now.

Way back in '87, me and a couple of my mates got our hands on the cool new game book. Rogue Trader it was. Didn't have no fancy-dancy minis for it, so we photocopied the chits out of the back of the book and played with them (marines and orks). Sometime later, and with much rejoicing, we discovered that there were cool little guys that we could get! After purchasing 2 boxes of beaky marines a few rhinos, preds and landraiders, I was the proud owner of my first army - SPACE MARINES!
Guard followed, because they got all of the cool tanks, Eldar were next, because one of the guys I played regularly swore you couldn't win with them! HA!!! Next were the Wolves, 'cause the models were SOOO cool!! Then the rest kind of just 'showed up', along with Titans & super heavies (Armorcast).

Currently I have at the bare minimum 2500 of each;

Space Wolves, Dark Angels, White Scars, My original first edition SM, Eldar, Dark Eldar, Tyranids, Orks, Witch Hunters (Sisters only as well as inqisitorial), Deamon Hunters (Grey Knights only as well as inquisitorial), Imperial Catachan Guard, Black Legion, Lost & the Damned, 13th Company (CURSE YOU GW FOR NERFING THE 2 PREVIOUS ARMIES!!! CURSE YOU!!!!), Necron, Tau, & Kroot.

AS you can see, I am now quite addicted to this crap......... So BEWARE!!!!

I started with Eldar, because I liked their look. Grew it big during 3E as my primary army, and mostly stopped when I hit 7k or 8k worth of points.

Then I added CSM because I wanted to do "Fallen Angels". But GW changed the CSM design, and wiped my particular Codex build, so I eventually dumped them.

I think I dabbled in Dark Eldar around this time, bought, started, sold off to the local DE guy, no regrets.

Then I added Tallarn Guard, again, because I liked their look. These stayed small until 4E, when Apoc got them to explode.

Then, I finally started SM. Like Jervis' Grey Marines, mine worked their way through all of the 3E SM Codices. As these were styled after RT-era (non-Psyker) "Grey Knights", until C: DH came out and made them all stupid-looking with the wrist guns, they kinda sat idle through 4E. With the new BA Codex, I have a direction for them (Jump Marines), so that'll be different.

With WH well-established, I kind of filled out my Sisters force from small allies. Same with growing from a handful of Stormies to dozens. Inquisitional Allies are *evil* for the wallet.

I think this is when I started and dumped a Kroot Mercenary force, to complement my IG, following the Kroot Mercs list. When I decided to consolidate down, the Kroot got sold off.

With the 4E CSM book in the background, I tried to work out a new army. This sat dead until 5E, and now, I've got a plan for an anti-Black Legion of "Fallen" Marines, so I've collected a new CSM army.

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!

As for my armies, I started with Space Wolves, and do so to this day. Their background and models are just too awesome for words.
I had a breif affair with the orginal T'au, but since realised what a steaming pile they are and traded them off for more wolves.
Last 18 months or so I have been slowly slowly been building up a Cadian Army to fit with my Wolves, though with the ne codex coming I may put that on hold, lest I be called a Bandwaggoning fanboi.
