Sounds like your FLGS really sucks.

Mine, there's open tables all day long.

combatmedic wrote:Agreed. Unless its like the bunker out here in So cal, where they have a small little store thats connected to a huge gaming area with long tables and tons of terrain, a GW store has those dinky little tables that look like half a craps table.

They expect you to play planet strike or appoc games with your friends at a house (who the hell does that?) or go to a FLGS.

Their store is just that. A store. FLGS hold games in their stores to draw business because they dont have the budget GW does and mall locations.

The only exception to this rule I ever saw was the Wizards of the Coast store in the Westminster mall (not to far from the current GW LA Bunker), who had a section of the store devoted to card and table top games, but they also had alot more floor space than the average GW mall store.

Depends on the store.

My shop is in a Mall. We have 8 big gaming tables, and an additional space that holds 20 more tables for bigger events. We routinely run 20k-40k per side apoc games, and don't mind if players do Apoc in the store. The big difference between my shops and a GW mall store, is in square feet. GW designs shops much smaller that what I currently have. I can't see how using a table for 1000 pts is a lot different than using a table for 2500 pts. Taks a bit longer to play, but unless every other table is being used and people waiting, who cares?

....and lo!.....The Age of Sigmar came to an end when Saint Veetock and his hamster legions smote the false Sigmar and destroyed the bubbleverse and lead the true believers back to the Old World.

well thanks for the input dakka!

i suppse i was being at least a bit (probably more) of an a$$ about the game.

but i was the only one in the store for most of the day, and we have 5 four foot game boards open at all times.

we ended up getting in a 1500 pts game (ity only lasted about a little less than an hour)

That info from the OP puts it in a different light. It could be the staffer has been told by his boss not to let people hog the tables, and the staffer is following the rules to the letter, rather than being flexible.

The cost of using a shop's table might be having to listen to their sales pitch though, nodding politely. Then play. Win win.

I haven't been in a GW store in ages and am curious to see how they would be around my locale. I wonder if it tears them up inside to have something like Planet Strike come out but then being unable to allow it to be played? Then again that's probably like wondering if the fellow at GameStop feels bad for selling you a refurbished system that still doesn't work too well

Of course if we're doing judgment calls of stores, it definitely sounds like yours isn't that good either.

Well, talking of judgement calls, is there any reason why we can't start an article about this?

A list of GW stores, and user comments about them. Everyone can add their local store and talk about...

* Number of tables
* Pushiness/helpfulness of staff
* Late openings
* Instore gaming/open to apocalypse games?

Sounds like a good idea? If so, I'll start it now....

Trouble with that is turnover of staff, and how well known you are.

My local GW, over the past 6 months, has switched to an entirely new set of staff. They all tried the selling side until I politely explained at an opportune time I was a regular in the store. I tend to deflect them by frothing about the next army I wish to collect. Does the trick for me!

It is a bit pointless and contradicting trying to sell a expansion game which has bigger point games and then not allowing to play a bigger point game in store.

Though, factors like how busy they are and closing times come into consideration. A 2k game can take about 2 and half hours, if it was close to closing time or a busy afternoon then they might not want the tables tied up for so long so they can either close the store, or let others play.

Swings and roundabouts I say.

Oh, and as for treating the staff member as an idjit.... Had you tried that in my day, I'd have taken some pleasure in explaining why you were not the sort of person we really wanted in the store, given you the website address for your purchases, and banned you from gaming in store.

Remember. It's their store, so treat it was you would when a guest in someones house. If it's shoes off at the door, it's shoes off at the door. If it's no swearing, it's no swearing and so on.

Yes it is their store. But if you want folks to say, come in play and buy stuff, then annoying them with rules like that is the fastest way to lose business.

There are times, that I can see, where if its busy you do want to stick with the 750-1000 point games.....but if its not, how nice is it to bend a bit? Easpecially if it showcases your new release like apocolypse or planet strike?

Yes because asking your customers to be mindful that others have access to the boards, and to bare that in mind is such unacceptable, arsehole behaviour isn't it?

Actually it is, IF mind you, its not busy and there arent folks waiting for the boards. Id dint get the feel that there were, only that they wanted to boards clear if folks wanted to play to cycle.

I can guarantee you that being allowed to play larger points, then being asked to wrap it up at the end of the game turn tends to cause more offence. Happened before!

And as I said, did the OP ask if they could specifically book a table for a longer game at a later date?

QFT

it's amazing how a person's nice attitude completely takes a 180 when he's asked to put something up because someone else would like to play a game.. Of course, they'd also be the one when they came in expecting everyone else to wrap up in 5 mins due to them wanting to play their game.

I just marked it down to knowing which customers were selfish and which weren't.. The non-selfish ones got a bit more leeway, while the selfish pricks got the letter of that law all day long.. NO expections for them..

Theres some wacked up logic being thrown round in this thread. namely the idea that big spenders should get priority on gaming in the store.

Perhaps they should have a door at the back of every store with 'gold memebers only' written on it. Then when any chavs pass by hurling abuse at anyone in the front they can just point towards the door and say "you haven't seen that lot yet".

Wow, what nonsense.

No money shouldnt bet priority. But on the other hand, holding to the rules for the sake of rules and annoying the folks that DO spend money in your store will see that money dry up real fast. There's a time to hold to the rules, and then there is a time to bend.
