Most of the stuff above is worth a look.

I'll shout from the rooftops for "Fables". Awesome idea, well executed, gorgeous art and it just ahs that certain "something" -- not "X factor, that's Marvel-- that raises it above the chaff. Gotta have something to have won so many awards eh ?

I'd also recommend James Robinson's STarman series to anyone who likes nice characterisation as well.

...If you were more versed and learned in the genre I'd push you towards both Morrison's run on Doom Patrol and his seminal work on Animal Man. But I think they'd just terrify you and make you feel things you've never felt before..

We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

Come on, you can't go wrong with Morrison's run on Doom Patrol. I think it's way more accessible than The Invisibles, at least. His run on JLA is probably his most newbie-accessible stuff, I suppose.

I've been all over Hellboy since Seed of Destruction. IMO the comic is much better than the movies...and subtlely different. I highly, highly recommend it.

This doesn't have much to do with anything, but I met Morrison and Quitely at a comic show once. When I got to the front of the line, Quitely said something to me, and thanks to his Scottish burr it sounded like Klingon to these American ears. He repeated himself and I still didn't get it. I mean, I had NO idea what just came outta the guy's mouth.

In the desperate seconds that followed, the panicked language centers of my brain were feverishly, frantically processing to decipher his sentence. Thankfully, in a burst of insight, I realized he was asking if he should sign the book I handed him on the outside or inside cover. I told him the inside cover, and breathed a sigh of relief before moving over to chat up Morrison about the Church of the Subgenius (I was wearing a J.R. "Bob" Dobbs shirt at the time).

Anyway, it just occurred to me that Quitely's probably your kind of guy, MDG.

There's a staaaaarman waiting in the sky...

No but seriously, Hellboy is brilliant, as is most of Alan Moore's work, even if he is batcrap INSANE as a person.

I come here in search of advice and reccomendation as to expanding my pretty meagre collection of Trade Paper Back comic books.

A couple of years ago, having thoroughly enjoyed Marvel's recent celluloid offerings, I felt it was high time I got into the comics properly, as having grown up in Britain, the only comics I read during the usual childhood escapism were the Dandy, Beano and Topper (but not the Beezer. I didn't like the Beezer. Then it merged with The Topper. Not happy about that one!). So I mentioned this to my local friendly Canadian, who reccomended I kick off with Marvel Zombies. He reccomend this knowing my fondness for the shuffling rotters in general, and of course being yet another Marvel Universe, for the uninitiated, it is less confusing then jumping into the main Universe with it's events and stuff.

Suffice to say I loved it, and now own Marvel Zombies 1, 2 and 3, Marvel Zombies Dead Days, and Marvel Zombies V Army of Darkness. Additionally, I have also procured a few other titles from Marvel, namely X:Men Endangered Species and Messiah Complex, all four volumes of Age of Apocalypse (awesome read that one!) plus Wolverine Origins, Death of Wolverine, and my most recent addition is Marvel : Secret Invasion.

And outside of Marvel, I have various Dark Horse Omnibi (I think thats the correct plural of Omnibus) specifically Aliens vol 2 and 3, Predator vol 1, Alien V Predator vol 1, and Terminator vol 1. And just to better increase my appreciation for the evolution of the art form, a collection each of Zombie Comics and Horror Comics, which are compilations from a number of stables.

So where to next? I'm really none too plussed for DC Comics beyond Batman, and would rather avoid their titles (find them quite dull to be honest). and I'd far rather buy them as TPB than individual comics for ease of storage.

I've had Marvel Civil War highly reccomended, so if anyone can offer me a complete list of the volumes involved in that, plus perhaps a suggested reading order, I'd be highly grateful!

Read books with real words in them, so much better.

I read some Spiderman hate, but I did want to say that I really enjoy the "Ultimate Spiderman" series from ~2000. The Hard Cover TPs, in particularly, are really nice, the books feel very substantial and the quality of the material is great (in my opinion). The story-line is fun and stays pretty engaging through-out (well, I've only read up through HC 7 so far, which is around issue 84 or so).

Also, if you're interested in something much more light-hearted and (to me) off-beat, I highly recommend Ben Edlund's "The Tick" from New England Comics - They recently released three large collections - "The Complete Edlund," "Big Blue Destiny," and "Karma Tornado."

And, of course, if you're into Meta-Gaming humor, The Order of the Stick (link to first online comic, no spoilers) has some nicely printed collections.

Don't get me wrong. I love Spider-Man. Ultimate Spider-Man has been very entertaining for years now with (almost) no lowpoint.

I just decided to boycot the regular Spider-Man stories as reaction to the giant slap-in-the-face that was "Brand New Day". Over 30 years of Spidey-canon flushed down the toilet.

Hi MDG

Here is my advice. Cable from Marvel is my favorite comic book character. He is alpha level pyschic born in the future and was infected with the techno virus. I bet that GW blatantly copied this for the Chaos Obliterators. His parents are Scott Summers and Jean Grey (Cyclops and Marvel Girl from the X Men). He has learned how to co-exist with the techno virus and keep it from consuming him... very cool in my opinion. There is a Cable series out now and he is protecting the mutant messiah. Cable can time travel! There was an older series that featured Cable and Dead Pool but it has expired.

I also love Grendel from Dark Horse. Sandman also from Dark Horse is also pretty cool. You might also enjoy the Nova force series from Marvel... It features Galactus, another one of my favorite comic book characters.

I'll add another vote for Watchmen. I'm reading the German version right now and it's pretty entertaining.

I also really, really, like the Image Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series from the 90s. It's the third volume, as the TMNT comics go. A lot of the TMNT stuff is good, really.

Never been a Spidey fan, but I recently read that Marvel's bringing back the "clone saga" in Ultimate Spider-Man. And this time they're gonna get it right and do it the way it should have been!

*facepalm*

I can only speculate that it's intense institutional shame that has them wanting to do a "do-over." But somehow I feel like they should stay, far, far away from any such plotlines.

Marvels was a wonderful and common people angle on the history of the superheroes of the Marvel universe, I recommend:
http://www.amazon.com/Marvels-Kurt-Busiek/dp/0785100490

My real love lately was The Authority, they are refreshingly anti-establishment and quite willing to turn the tables and wipe out offending dictators etc, storyline is strong:
http://www.amazon.com/Authority-Vol-1-Relentless/dp/1563896613/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1246454110&sr=1-1

Slaine was an amazing series, lightweight but very enjoyable. Nemesis the Warlock, ABC warriors etc.

The Alan Moore series, Promethea, is one I also found very good:

Ohhh, yeah... N TANK Girl:

Just looking on my bookshelf I would say...

"Northlanders" because it's the only one that hasn't already been mentioned. This is the only comic I am totally fanboyish over. The art and story never fail to impress.

I like reading the "Invincible" trades, but I borrowed them from a friend. I dont think I would buy them personally, but it's entertaining.

I enjoyed the "Sinestro Corps" trade, just because the bad guys were playing dirty, winning, and having fun. The art was also very good.

Also I will second Hellboy, B.P.R.D., Hellblazer, Sin City, Umbrella Academy, Starman, and Batman TDKR.

Oh yeah, almost forgot The Crow by James O Barr.
