Oh no, quippy jerk.
The funny thing is I am pretty sure by breaking your post up into a two-part insult, you have somehow avoided the Mods wrath on a technicality.
This aside, chill out and stop being so blunt and... well, a jerk all the time.

Come again? Insult?
All I said was I thought being a mature student might be pretty boring. Automatically Appended Next Post: I have this stick and you have the wrong end, or you might not have the stick at all, I'm not sure. I'm sure it has something to do with a stick though somewhere along the line...stick...who knows.

For what it's worth Mad doc I became a mature student a couple of years ago and I'm having a ball. The best thing I've found about returning to education after quite a long time away is that the whole learning thing is fresh and exciting unlike all the students who have been on the education treadmill for the last ten plus years of their life. however being the oldest one in the room of 150 people including the lecturer was a bit weird.

If you're going to uni in Canterbury(since you mentioned christ church), may I recommend the War Studies degree at the University of Kent?
I've been on it a year, and it's quite an interesting course.

I have always wonder what you would do with a history degree besides study and teach the material. It always looks good to have a masters degree, even more-so to have a Phd, but the amount of time required boggles me wee little mind.
On the other hand I can chisel and sand blocks of wood for weeks at a time, with only moderate breaks... perhaps a degree of this nature is not beyond my reach (within my given field of course).

Well, to put it simply, getting a masters in War Studies(which is History with an emphasis on tanks really) gives me all kinds of interesting career options that other degrees wouldn't be quite so adequate for.
For example, the intelligence industry. The guys over at MI6, and the DIS apparantly snap up people with degrees like this. There's the defence industry, as hi-tech arms are actually Englands largest export. As you mentioned, there's the academic route. It's also good for anyone heading for any kind of military service. It provides a solid grounding for any kind of diplomatic or government work, and they're always looking for people who know what's what over at the weapons development industries.

Sounds like some pretty advanced careers there. MI6 would get me all the babes I am sure, although I don't think I would be the James Bond type, unless....
I have thought about doing things along these lines, but not my cup of tea, although I may pursue an advanced degree in design.

Not all military jobs involve getting shot at. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of them don't.

That depends on the military. I know the US hires out for most of its logistics operations.
That said, the USAF only allows officers to pilot aircraft. If you're an enlisted man you can look forward to a whole lot of behind the lines work, which also happens to line up nicely with a lot of civilian maintenance jobs. The UK may be different, but I doubt it.

It's probably worth it.
It's also good you put it off. University might have been a waste of time if you went into
it with the attitude that you had originally. Sure, you might have been able to struggle past
the apathy and walk away with the paper, but not everyone can pull that off.
Good luck!

Yeah, Malfred's right. To be clear, I would definitely recommend going to University, if it's what you want to do (and it sounds like it is). I wasn't saying the military was the better choice, just saying that not all the jobs involve combat.

Hmmm...serendipitous!
Just got back from handing the Cab over (to the most boring man on the planet. Why me?) and decided to stick the news on whilst the Laptops boiler came up to pressure to run this new fangled interwebs. And what are they covering?
A lack of male teachers, and thus role models, in Primary Education for England and Wales. Do I need a more obvious sign? I say not.
Though I really do need careful research. Being Scottish, I'd quite like to be able to teach there should I wish it (worse places to work toward retirement years) and sadly, that means I'd have to qualify up there. Not entirely sure what the difference is like, but I do know Scottish Education is considered superior to English, especially at Primary level. Good news though, is having Family up there, rent would be less exorbirant, allowing me to qualify with (arguably) a lower overall debt. Hurrah!

Actually history, in the UK at least, is shown to have the most varied graduate emplyment than any other subject. And currently has the highest employment rates in uni leavers, which are pretty bad at the moment.

Mad Doc Grotsnik wrote:Gyar. Kind of knew that, but didn't know there were so many dialects beyond Mandarin and Cantonese.
They are not really dialects. The Chinese government likes to call them dialects to give the impression that China is much more homogeneous than it really is, which helps justify Han/Mandarin domination of the rest of the population.
They are separate languages which are mutually unintelligible but have some ancestral roots, much like different European languages.
