@Blackbone + Somnicide- thanks for the comments. Somnicide, thanks for the reference to Antman's blog.
For completion's sake, I guess I should add one more photo of my greater plague demon. This one has the completed sword. As advised by Slappywag, I used a couple of pigments to give a varied rusty look and then used fixer/turpentine to attach them permanently. I then used a small amount of water effects with a touch of olive green to add a bit of nurgly slime to the sword.

And here is the backside of the demon. The slime is a bit more noticeable on this side of the sword.

@randy: probably not for a while. Post-C: IG, I've been focused on my CSM, along with Space Hulk.

I am planning on adding another bloodcrusher unit to my army. The crushers, nurgle princes, and the GUO fit my play style: that is, since I'm too cautious, a poor tactician, and a terrible estimator of deep strike distances, I need units that can take a lot of extra shooting punishment.
I'd rather not create yet another unit (just four) of red crushers to match the six I already have. Inspired by Sersi's utter brilliant Slaneeshi daemon army and his converted ogre bulls as crushers, I started thinking about the FW renegade ogryn bulls as a possible count as crushers unit. Any opinions?

Oh, those FW models are beautiful, but if you're good at converting, a box of plastic Bulls is only $35.

@JohnH - That's a good point. I feel a bit intimidated by the prospect of a lot of green stuff converting. At present I certainly don't have the abilities of people like tinfoil, sersi, or yourself.
I'm about to start a renegade IG project and was thinking that doing some tank conversions for the medusa, hydra, and manticore would be a good place to start learning the art.

With the new quad-autocannon available on terrain, Hydra is pretty easy.
Medusa is a FW kit, and easily convertible from a Bassie (just need a big enough tube and sleeve the Bassie).
Manticore is another FW kit, but somewhat difficult to convert (it's difficult to make big rockets that look good, and you need 4 of them).

I was considering using one of the 1/48 sturmtiger kits out there (such as http://www.armorama.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Reviews&file=index&req=showcontent&id=4357) as the basis of a medusa.
From my calculations it should be about the size of a chimera in length and the size of a rhino in width and height. To my eyes the big gun on the sturmtiger fits with the heroic scale of GW tank guns. As well, it will be easy to add a heavy flamer to the hull as well as add renegade symbols and murals to the big slopping plates of that tank. The 1/35 scale I think will be just a bit too big as it will be very similar to the land raider in width and height.

If you're not a big converter, then that SturmTiger isn't a bad choice for an off-the-shelf model to stand in, tho you'll have to call it Closed-Topped...
Go for it!

I've decided to start work on my next army: renegade imperial guard.
I know the basic look that I am going to attempt to achieve, which is rusted out old tanks, lots of battle damage, trench warfare, and guardsman working together with the odd freak. I've ordered a variety of heads and the like from Pig Iron, plus a few models from Forge World. While I wait for them to arrive, I might as well get started on figuring out the paint scheme.
So last night I quickly painted a couple of possible colour schemes. Given that it is guard and there will be plenty of models to paint up, I have to go with something that is relatively quick and easy. For these prototypes, I didn't necessarily paint everything, nor do much layering or highlighting.
Here is my first batch of renegade prototypes:
1. red clothes + metal armour
2. dark grey clothers + metal armour
3. dark grey clothers + red armour (this one is from two squads I have already painted up from two years ago)
4. Blue-Grey clothes + metal armour
5. Green clothers + very light grey non-metalic armour
Any opinions?

I do like the dark clothes and red armour, although I could see it being a little clean. Then again, it would awesome in reasonable numbers on the table top, and if you felt like it you can always go back later and add some more detail to a scheme like that later; it looks better doing that than having some models painted up well and others plain unprimed grey.

Dude, your painting is just amazing, and you should feel awesome. I love the look of your Chaos models, very fine attention to detail, it's so nice to see such nice models getting such a great paintjob.
You sir are a tribute to the art. Bravo.
