When do you buy miniatures?
I dont buy any models
Any time I have the money
Any time I see something I want
Any time something new and cool comes out
When building a new tournament/event army
When I have finished painting what I already own
When I get bored of what I'm doing already
When a friend pressures me into purchasing stuff
Other (write in)
When something is a limited release

When I see something I want. Usually I'll do things in batches, rather than buying things in dribs and drabs. So if I know I want "X" army, I'll wait an extra few months and then buy it in a single go.

I'm not very rational when it comes to GW purchases. I will splurge out for a couple of months, buying new models every week, then I have so much unpainted stuff that i feel I can't get anymore. I'll spend about four months trying to get stuff painted (I'm a slow/lazy painter), so after four to six months, (and still alot of unpainted stuff) it's time for a new splurge!. I really envy those people who get their armies painted in about a month.

I'm a poor college student, so I buy figures when: A) I have the money and B) I find a deal on eBay.

I'm also a complete and utter neophyte, so I've been grabbing what I can find and afford with little consideration of any exact list I might want to develop or when I'll be able to get around to assembling and painting everything. Once I've started really working through my stuff, I'll probably start looking for specific units that I want for a list and become one of the "once I've finished painting everything" guys.

I have about 10,000 points of IG... so I generally trade. If I'm actually buying a model 99% of the time I'm buying a large used army on craigslist for a fraction of it's cost.

When I feel like it.

Which means that:
- I've got the budget for the minis,
- the models are good-looking,
- they have playable rules, and
- I can get them for a great price.

If it doesn't hit all 4 points, I don't buy.

I know what I want. I want lots of things. So instead of buying what I want, I buy
according to a budget every month and according to what I have to paint. If I have
some unpainted Soviets, I don't buy anymore Soviets until I paint them. If I have unpainted
Cygnar, I don't buy anymore Cygnar...

So the money gets spent, but I don't worry about unpainted stuff. I paint
a lot faster these days. I can stand to look at a few unpainted things on my
table.

When I can afford it, the store has something I want, I don't have a wtfhuge backlog of unpainted models, and I can face the idea of putting it together.

Although new or limited releases tempt me.

The combination of factors means I've bought virtually no models for months, as I'm still working on a guard battleforce.
Although I go shopping on monday for an army case, glue, and maybe another chimera or sentinel.

I have a baneblade, a basilisk, a hellhound, 2 squads of cadian troops, some ork barricades, a few buildings and various other scenery, some termies, Chaplain Grimaldus and his retinue, a chaplain in terminator armour, a rhino, a dreadnought, a squad of 5 BT initiates and High Marshall Helbrecht in various places around my house, waiting to be painted

now i've listed it all I realise I need to start painting my old stuff and stop buying new stuff!

When I want a change of something.

I'm currently working on a guard army, for example, but I'm actually getting rather bored with 40k, so I'm looking at Warmachine (which I used to play) and infinty (which I will be playing in the near future (ba-doom-tish).

Guard infantry are tedious to paint and assemble. For a change, I bought some WM jacks and an infinity starter.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

I relay pretty heavily on media when I model and paint, so my purchases have a strange cycle of CD, model, Movie, model, and so on. This means that my money is divided between three different outlets so the actual amount of models that I buy are somewhat decreased. So I guess the answer to the question is, it depends if I have something to watch or listen to.

Generally I only buy if I really need a unit or model to finish out whatever plan I'm currently hatching with my army (currently the super-duper melta tactical squad), and when that happens I try to hold out until I catch an online retailer or someone on ebay offering what I need on the cheap.

Of course, if all else fails I buy models when I'm able to catch one of my neighbors and steal their organs for sale on the black market. You'd be amazed at how many tactical squads and terminators you can buy from a kidney....

I am offically a "get stuff painted before you buy new stuff" painter. And I manage to stick to that a good 90% of the time... I do wind up picking up small things here or there just to paint though.

A Reaper blister here, some AoW Slayers there. I won't start anything big though until I get my current big project done.
