That stuff is foul. I know it's very good for you, but it tastes so bad. You can't even get 'real' green tea around here.

Why do you keep recommending Asian food? Do you think I live in Japan or something? I doubt there's anywhere in these parts bar an Asian restaurant where I can find 'coffeemilk' or those freaky things you advocate eating...

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Wikipedia quote, standard caveats etc. "Although initial studies suggested that antioxidant supplements might promote health, later large clinical trials did not detect any benefit and suggested instead that excess supplementation may be harmful."

You're probably told to eat them because there is a very large market for "healthy" foods. Seems to me like antioxidant is one of those words that you slap on a product to make it sell more.

Drink some pomegranate juice FFS... seriously. There is clear science saying that it helps, and now it does not help? What a bunch of nonsense, too many rocks to the brain will kill you as well in case you did not know.

Avoid the branded stuff and do a bit of in depth research with cross referencing and all that fancy whoo-haah. Eat tomatoes, because they taste good, and they are healthy, along with many other fancy foods that can be grown in your own dwelling with the right information to provide you with a bit of a head-start. Try Hydroponics if you are in a totally dry zone, but most places have space for things like blueberries and tomatoes regardless of climate, adapting of course for the seasons, and expecting a bit of a smaller crop.

Wait wait, what? Clear science that what what helps, pomegranite juice or antioxidants?

Regardless of the status of pomegranite juice, the only "clear science" regarding antioxidants is their immediate effects. Which is, slowing oxidation reactions in cells and preventing the creation of free radicals, which can damage cells.

It is unknown whether oxidative stress is a cause or consequence of disease.

I have no doubt that tomatoes etc are good for you, but I doubt very much that this is because of antioxidants.

If you are using mass amounts of supplements you are doing something wrong. Having a healthy diet with a moderate amount of supplements will provide you with a healthy system and a sound mind.

When you rely on these branded products to fix your life, you will obviously be risking your health to achieve it.

I have no doubt that tomatoes etc are good for you, but I doubt very much that this is because of antioxidants.

GOOD!

Forget them and maintain a healthy diet, avoiding the BS nonsense like this propoganda article that started the thread. Some scientist somewhere said something, not really providing serious proof, but by saying it is likely... so is an asteroid my friend... so is an asteroid.

Why should it be necessary to supplement your diet? We're lucky enough to live in societies where pretty much any basic foodstuff is easy to obtain. Supplements are simply unnecessary.

Supplement is a very broad term that would focus on your dietary needs. Very few dieticians would argue that vitamins per se, were not beneficial (solid pill digestion aside mind you) as the advice would reflect on general supplementation as guided by your needs.

So...what I think you're getting at is that you should try and eat a balanced diet, and "supplement" it with the things you're not currently eating, but should? Seems like common sense to me.

If you want to, taking vitamins can and will help you moderately. So take them or don't, eat Mcdankies or don't, just don't scare everyone with direct assumptions of mass anarchy... wait... am I off track here?

Take this as an insult or don't... I am talking about eating tomatoes here...

Well, excuse me, my dear Cheese. I was almost completely sure that you were Tasmanian.

I don't drink coffee. Horrid stuff. The taste stays in my mouth for half a day... mostly because I never eat breakfast. I do start my day with 3-4 cups of very strong tea, however, which is an absolute curse because my job involves driving around all day with little/no breaks.

Personally I think the amount of milk you're taking with your coffee will cause bowel cancer faster than the weak doses of coffee you're having. In all seriousness, don't get sucked into the everything-causes-cancer-pomegranates-yay hype, because we've been been living an average five or six dozen years for much longer than the Lifestyle Channel has been on air. Pomegranates taste great, but the juice is one hell of a premium price to pay for no great health benefit. For chrissakes put real sugar in it, too. Ya wimp.

Cheese Elemental wrote:Right, this has been worrying me recently. I only drink fairly weak coffee (with milk and two sweeteners), but I've heard that all coffee is carcinogenic (it increases chances of cancer). I know that this is true for some overheated or deep-fried foods, but I'm told that's harmless in small quantities, and black-charred meat is carcinogenic too, but nobody in their right mind eats food burned that badly. I could see how large amounts of caffiene (like energy drinks, for example) would be harmful, but my white coffee?

I'm confused, Dakka. Help me!

Don't worry. You're going to die. It will likely be painful and pathetic.

The answer to the original question is no, coffee doesn't cause cancer. I think I read everyone has cancer cells in em, it's just some things you consume makes them turn bad on ya, like smoking, etc.

IMO, what you should worry about more is what's in the coffee, not the coffee itself. Artificial sweeteners are bad, if not for cancer for other things. My GF is always telling me Aspartame can lead to neurological problems and help the spread of MS. They used to say Sweet & Low caused cancer in lab rats but then changed their mind.

Chances are anything you consume that isn't "natural" can eventually have some adverse effect on you. Eat healthy and organic whenever you can. When you look at the ingredients on a box of something, if there's a lot of words you can't pronounce, it's probably not too good for you. But with everything, moderation is key

That said, I drink a 20 oz coffee with 8 splendas in it almost every morning

I think if you had to choose, you'd be better off with coffee than with soda. Take coke for instance... Every spring I use coke to clean my BBQ grill. I take my grill tops off the grill and put em in the sink. Then I take 3 2 liter bottles of coke and pour it in. I soak the grills over night and the next morning they're sparkling clean. The acid in the coke eats away all the grime and crud. And that's the same acid you're putting in your belly 1 can at a time. yuck!

You can test it yourself, put some old rusty painted over nails in some coke for 24 hours, they'll be sparkly the next day

I wonder if you could use it to strip minis instead of simple green? hmm... never tried it..

While we're on the subject of "things advertised as healthy but really not", there is no good evidence that large amounts of Vitamin C do anything to help prevent colds or other illnesses.

Also, Gwar! tells me that the "helpful bacteria" yogurt is a scam as well. Education!

Hot coffee is very, very dangerous.

Coffee can be dangerous since it can get you hooked on caffeine which is the least spoken about drug imo of the ones most commonly used and right behind fags and alcohol in terms of addictiveness and useage.

Those caffeine shots and the like I can only imagine is terribad for your heart especially if you take energy drinks, eat energy chips, energy shots, sodas, etc. in addition to that.

Personally I don't drink coffee because I'm not a fan of the taste of hot drinks in general but its your life so do what ya want!

Um, I have half a teaspoon of instant coffee in it. I don't eat or drink any of those 'energy foods/drinks', because I know that much caffiene is unhealthy.
