The ruins of the Palace of Thorns

My experience as a teacher in Hackney, the roughest part of London, is that carrying weaponry doesn't make anyone treat you politely. It makes other people treat you like a target.

In the past few years at my school, one (pre-teen) boy has murdered someone, another (early teen) boy has been done on charges that I am not fully aware of, but include drugs and weapon offenses, and, from a conversation I overheard, possibly murder. As a Head of Year, I have managed to avoid permanent exclusion of one boy for carrying weapons, and got him a "managed move" instead, seen another boy narrowly avoid jail due to offenses committed whilst on tag, known at least 4 pupils to be stabbed outside of school. I've now got a pair of thirteen year old boys in my new year group I'll be referring to case workers due to their gang connections.

The last thing any of those kids need anywhere near them is more guns or knives.

On the plus side, I've got at least one boy through school with decent GCSEs, including a C and a B in English and Maths. If he had been chucked out of school (and I probably could have swung it if I had tried) he'd have been on the street and not have extricated himself from the gang nonsense he was well into. If he had walked up to you with his gang to rob you, and you pulled a weapon him, he and his friends would have killed you. Another boy (the boy on tag mentioned above) who I let do his exams in isolation as an alternative to permanent exclusion, actually seemed to cotton to the fact his future was in his own hands just in time, grew up late, but before it was too late. He is now in college, getting a trade and actually speaking like an adult capable of making rational decisions.

Some of the gak people come out with on the internet exposes a massive lack of understanding of the real world.

You don't solve problems by putting weapons in people's hands. You can't protect a potential victim by giving them a weapon. You don't try to make people fear you as a way of controlling them. When you try to prevent someone being aggressive by responding with aggression, it is unlikely you will be successful. They are people who are aggressive "for a living". They'll respond by upping the ante, being more aggressive, and likely making the consequences worse for either you, them, or, most likely, both of you.

Live in the real world, and recognise that when you try to put the fear into someone, they are more likely to be more aggressive, not less.

If lennon had a gun, then maybe he would still be alive.

Personally, I like the whole concealed weapons license deal and I like the fact of owning a firearm. Seeing as though I am only 19, handguns are out of the question, rifles are not though and I have a .22 and recently had a mosin-nagant ordered for me($75.95 for a 7.56 without a safety and a bayonet included? Yes Please!)

I will also bring this to the game of guns.
Mandatory Gun Laws
Compare that to some other states and etc, that have seen increases in violent crime and in other crimes after gun bans.
Gun Ban Stats
I tried to find a non-biased website, but that's impossible in these kinds of issues so I went with the only .org one on this.

If Chapman HADN'T have had a gun, Lennon would DEFINITELY still be alive.

And dude, what the hell do you need a rifle with a bayonet for? Are you off to Ypres any time soon?

Didn't think so. The above quote is why the idea of living in the US is starting to lose it's appeal for me.

If you want to talk guns, go to the Firing Range over at Something Awful, great bunch of guys and gals who love showing off their stuff and not so nutso about it. Actually quite informative and friendly, even for a wussy non-gun lover like me.

Except for that one guy.. Who names his guns and kisses them. Ugh.

If you pull a handgun and immediately begin engaging targets while moving towards cover, and somehow *still* end up getting killed/maimed.....you're doing it wrong.

I was going to make some other comments but I got distracted at EncylopediaDramatica and forgot everything.

Having worked with guns most of my adult life I can tell you that they are tools and nothing else. Tools of the worst nature. They are heavy, dirty pigs. My humanitarian sensibilities scream out against them. Yet, I still like them and own a few myself. It is a strange dichotomy.

Ambivalence, it is my gift and my curse.

Honestly, I plan on owning a gun eventually. But not until i live somewhere I need it. Like north Pocono where there are bears.

Speaking of NJ, I hate this state. I was telling my mother (who owns a .357 revolver loaded with .38 flat-tipped rounds) about Sig Sauer's Cash for Clunkers program, and that she should consider buying some POS gun at a pawn shop for cheap so she could turn it in for a brand new Sig and get a big discount. She then began to explain all the NJ laws that make that damn near impossible.

I bought all my firearms in Florida: 2 SKS's (one Yugo, one Chinese) and a Bushmaster M4. The process is basically like this:

1. Pick the weapon you want.
2. Do background check (takes about 5 minutes).
3. Do other paperwork for purchase.
4. Come back in 3-5 days (forgot which) to pick up your new instrument of death.

If you get a concealed carry permit (not too difficult according to the gun store guys) there isn't even a waiting period.

I'm pretty sure NO CCW permit allows you to carry an M4 or SKS concealed. Thanks for the laugh, though.

Also, for home defense your mother seems like she knows what she is doing as she has just about the best combination for NOT shooting through the next three houses.

Oh and btw the SKS-es are most likely piles of junk. I traded a pair of boots for one of mine, the boots were better but didn't fit. Some of the Russian ones are up to snuff but those other makes really use inferior parts. Be careful and don't be shy about updated/improving your springs. Especially if you plan for it to get any real use.

Nor did I say it did. I said it allows you to purchase a weapon same-day, no waiting period. At least in Miami-Dade County, which, along with Broward County (Ft. Lauderdale) probably has the strictest firearms laws in the state.

Also, for home defense your mother seems like she knows what she is doing as she has just about the best combination for NOT shooting through the next three houses.

She also NEVER goes to the range so she probably couldn't hit the broadside of a barn if it came down to it. I keep telling her to get a shotgun but she has other priorities.

My rifles aren't for home defense. If I had to use one in an emergency, all my ammo is hollow point (reduced penetration, very nice vs flesh) and when combined with the rather sturdy cinder block construction of the Florida homes I've lived in, I wasn't too concerned about stray rounds busting open Little Timmy's brainpan two doors down. Not to mention that the small size of my efficiency (5m distances, TOPS) made missing damn near impossible.

The M4 was to help me retain some semblance of marksmanship skills as we only qualified annually in the National Guard. The Yugo SKS (1st weapon purchased) was just for plinking, and while it lacks a chrome-lined barrel that hasn't been a problem when mated with non-corrosive ammo. It's in pretty decent condition; I drove over to their warehouse and hand-picked it from their racks (they even had rifles of all types just piled up in corners in the office, it was crazy). Plus the folding bayonet means it retains some use as a spear during the eventual Zombie Apocalypse. The Norinco SKS is a little crummy (pawn shop purchase), but I bought it specifically to mod like crazy. Telescoping stock with rails, vertical foregrip, detachable mags (the decent plastic Tapco ones), replacement gas piston and gas tube. For ~$350 total you basically get an AK with a smaller mag capacity (20 vs 30 rounds), but with the ability to mount accessories. I'd like to add a reflex sight as I DESPISE the AK/SKS sights, but I just can't justify putting a $500 Eotech on a $350 clunker that I rarely use.

*sighs wistfully* Now I'm stuck trying to buy airsoft guns from Hong Kong to get my Tactikool fix. :(

Change your springs on that Norinco. Trust me.

Plus your mother probably won't have to train to hit anything if (hopefully never) she does have to fire a shot, it will probably be under two meters anyway. The sound alone should send most anyone running. Those that wouldn't run, she probably wouldn't have a chance to fire against anyway.

One last thing. 7.62x39 Ball ammo is infinitely cheaper. You can snip the tip about an eighth inch down for pretty much the same effect (even better glancing and shattering off of those block walls for creating shrapnel) and you will save a bundle. Of course it is illegal...

The irony of this whole thread is quite comical.
