Especially if you plan for it to get any real use.

SKS's can be decent, but the junk ratio is high. They are excellent for cheap plinkers to have fun with.

Surely a basic shotgun is a good all-round weapon for short range shooting and hunting of birds and small to medium animals.

3.) Proven in combat!
4.) Still being produced in even lighter and stronger composites instead of wood!
5.) Easy on the maintenance!

If you don't know what this rifle is by simply looking at it, then you don't deserve one!

Your wisdom is wise. Fulton refurbushes and rebuilds them FYI.

Plus they are not pansie plastic and the butt is an effective cricket bat substitute for close in zombie work.

Accuracy. I'd much prefer a half decent rifle if you're looking to throw slugs downrange. Cheaper ammo as well, depending on what you're shooting. Plus if you're getting on in life scoped rifles are the bomb. You can get rifles from .22LR all the way up to something capable of shooting a moose. I'm looking at another .22LR rifle and proper cscope up for She Who Must Be Obeyed and Genghis Connie, as I've been told I'm being remiss in not teaching her to shoot a rifle yet (that was an interesting conversation).

Now you can put a scope on a shotgun. I've seen that advertsied, but frankly that marks you as a dork of the recreational shooting world. Its like the numbnut I saw once who took an HK submachine gun, converted it to .22 long rifle (a child's or target round) and was trying to shoot it at the 7 yard line. We were embarassed FOR him.

Oh, and I prefer the wood as well for your same "cricket bat" reasons!

My point was that by carrying a shotgun you don't have to carry a rifle as well.

If something big comes along (Zombie waterbuffalo, for example) you wait for it to get in range and splat it with a slug.

If you're thinking about true multi-purpose then a good rifle is more well suited to that task anyway. Something like a SOCOM or SOCOM II, solid rifle with one of the greatest rifle rounds EVER produced, the 7.62 x 51 or .308 Win. Of course if you want the newly dubbed (thanks to Frazzled) "Cricket Bat Effect" go for the full blown M14, although the thing weighs a ton (but isn't that the point?).

Just carry a rifle. Shotguns are good for birds, people, and lions at close range.

A rifle isn't very good for shooting game birds unless you are Hunter Quatermain.

True that. As noted it depends on what you're using it for. A slug thrower is not accurate.

I've had experts say if you're talking zombiepocalypse you need an AK-47 (not 74). Due to the same reasons as the IG has lasguns: practically indestructible, the average smithy can fix it if it does break, and most chance of getting ammunition worldwide.

The fact that the 47 fires 7.62 doesn't hurt either. I don't imagine the 5.45 would be much of an anti-zombie round.

.230ish causes more damage to tissue actually due to tumbling. When it tumbles anyway... But yea you're often right.

.308's better because less energy is imparted directly allowing better penetration through materials.

The point about zombies is they don't care much about tissue damage unless it is in the brain.

The spread patterns are pretty wide. Have you tested it yet?

Whatya mean? That is a fine weapon for the post-apocalyptic zombies infested world! Just because most pistols have an effective range of 50meter+/- and TV/Movies would lead you to believe pistols are often used in gun fights between 10-100 meters doesn't mean it's true! The truth is most pistol fire is exchanged at very close range (0-10 meters if IIRC). When zombies get too close making your AK, M4 or Socom 16 impractical, you whip this baby out and handle that business. This pistol is pure win for several reasons...

1.) Buckshot in a pistol = Hell yes for scrambling brains!
2.) Different round types usable in one pistol, which is very important for post-apocalyptia.
3.) Revolvers are very simple devices so you don't have to worry about worn out or relaxed clip springs from ammo stored too long in them.

All, jokin- uh I mean practicality aside, that is a very nice handgun.

At 10 yards+ the penetration is only around 5", not enough to be considered a good defensive load but I figure if I need to ever draw on someone outside my house I'd be within 2-3 yards so the pattern isn't really that bad, it's about 2" between pellets at 10 yards, haven't tried it closer.

I have .45 hollows in my house I load in there at night instead just in case as I see myself being further away from a intruder than someone trying to steal my wallet or carjack me.

I got a good lead on a .44 Taurus for really cheap, thinking of using that for home defense.

I love the Taurus guns. Nothing but good things I hear about them and not even as close to pricy as a Kimber. A buddy of mine spent $2k on a custom engraved Kimber .45. Eek.

I love how this has gone from 'Every American Should Own A Gun' to 'AAAARRGHH! ZOMBIES!'

.44 for home defense!?!?! You want to shoot the neighbors, don't you? Go for .44 mag so you can shoot the neighbor's neighbors too! May I suggest a nice .45 ACP Revolver. I believe S&W makes them, they store forever to fire when ready and you'll drop anyone in your home without killing the neighbors.

If you can manage it (say, a trench coat) the CCW here will let you conceal whatever you like.

If we assume that the kind of zombies that would take over America are the slow shambling type, then what you really want is a weapon which would cause an inelastic collision with the zombie.

For example, a high power rifle will most likely shoot right through the zombie hardly changing its momentum at all, where as a shotgun loaded with bird shot would change greatly reduce the velocity of the zombie for a moment allowing you to escape.

if you want the math behind this i can add that later, but I didn't want to bore you guys : )

Nearest neighbor is bout 200 yds through the woods.

I wouldn't mind an M1 Garand but kind of unwieldy for home defense.

Fair argument. I amend my statement to say: ...the greatest anti-Romero zombie, rifle in the world for its one-shot-one-kill capacity and used famously by Robert Joy's character in Land of the Dead.
