I think the important question which makes this less of a double standard is this: "Does leaving your entire army in reserve stop the game from being played?"

That's pretty hilarious. The look on the Tau player's face is great. Funny tactic though, I know I wouldn't have thought of doing that

Since the french player was declaring that all his forces are in reserve ( he deploys his forces according to dice rolls after the 1st turn), the russian guy got to infiltrate ( put anywhere on the board 12 inches away from enemy {since no enemy on the board he can put on his opponent edge}). Since the russian man had the french man's whole table edge blocked, the frenchman's army could not deploy ( when coming from reserves you come from your table edge, since in 40k you can't move through enemy units, his army could not eneter the battle field). If he had had khan, he could have outflanked and could have come on the board from another edge.

It would be nice if you had the countries correct:
- The Russian is the White Scars player who made the decision to place all in Reserves. He thought he would screw the Tau player out of 2 shooting phases.
- The French player is the Tau player with 30-odd Kroot. Kroot inherently Infiltrate.
So in fact, the French player PWNZ0RED the Russian.

That was cool, he held his entire army in reserve to give the Tau player nothing to shoot at. Obviously he was aiming at bringing them in in waves to beat the Tau down in CC. I'm also surprised that Creed has not been mentioned in this topic.

I agree with Timmah here, Penalising players for legal "dick moves" is utterly moronic. If you are banned for doing that, why are you not banned for holding everything in reserve so your opponent loses two shooting rounds?

Because it's Spase Mareinz? They didn't get to "FOR THE EMPEROR!!!11!" those Tau.
Or it could be so we don't get way too many IRL Creeds showing up. Also, kind of ironic the IRL Creed would be against White Scars; Khan > Creed in terms of the ability of Tactical Genius (with less variety to it though). Although Khan's version doesn't sound as cool.

If I were there and the tournament said I couldnt do a totally legal move, Id argue that with extreme hatred. Is it a dick move to pull that? Sure I guess. I see it as, if my opponent is dumb enough to leave me the room to do said legal move, then he SHOULD get mowed over.
Thatd be like asking people at an event to dumb down their power lists because some people complained about nob biker spam.

I'll check the ETC site and see, since that's where it happened. Tho as this is a relatively hardcore Euro event, I can't see any such banning occurring. The Russian player deserved to lose, the French guy deserved the win, and both tactics are valid.

Well, it's a stupid move in a open list environment.
And a gamble in a closed list environment.
High risk/high returns.
All's fair if the rules don't contradict what happens.
Though...I might be wrong, but I don't think the Rulebook covers this issue of denied reserves...might it be house rule/up to Tourny Organizers how it resolves.
/Shrug.
My 7 Cents.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

I think the moral of the story is to pay attention to the rules before you try to do something clever like hold the entire army in reserves.
I recall a discussion about Drop Pod lists raising this exact situation, except with Space Marine Scouts. The idea being that if you tried to Drop Pod your entire army, your opponent would simply hold everything in reserve. Hence the Scouts would prevent them from moving on. But tanks could move them out of the way.
Yet without tanks, or outflanking, the Russian held his force in reserve against a force he knew to contain lots of infiltrators, and it takes only five infiltrating models to cover a foot of board edge.

If it was my tourny then the house rule for vehicles is that it would be classifed as a tankshock and if the enemy so chooses to do so conduct a death and glory attack. If it is an infantry unit then it is considered an assault with no +1 attack. Automatically Appended Next Post: Now if this is 'ard Boyz then the SM player is SOL!

You are correct, it's not covered in the rulebook. Deep Strike Reserves that don't make it onto the table are consdered destroyed at the end of the game, but nothing covers normal reserves unable to enter play. As long as you advertised the rules changes so that anyone attending knows, no problem. Otherwise, anyone who disagrees with your house rules has a valid reason to be upset for you changing the rules without announcing it.

From what I read when this first came out, the French player made a note of asking his opponent if he really wanted to hold all his forces in reserve; as the French players troops were infiltrators. Khan wasn't taken due to the rules of the ETC.
