No, they just need to be 12" or 18" away from any enemy models.

An international tourney, a Russian brought an army based on White Scars (withouth Khan) with bike spam and he played against a french player with Tau.

The russian won the initiave and decided to go first and leave everything on reserves. The french infiltrated his kroot freely to his enemy deploy zone. Funny stuff came when he told his opponent he couldn't get into the battlefield with ANY unit.

Result - Tau 1500 SM 0

Guess who is playing Tau?

Thatd be like asking people at an event to dumb down their power lists because some people complained about nob biker spam.

JUDGE!!! My opponent is using tactics and I'm playing stupid and just rolling dice, please give him an autoloss.

Being smart and you're opponent being an idiot isn't a dick move in my book. It just is what it is.

Also, I believe the French player had first turn and told him he was infiltrating the Kroot. (dawn of war setup) And the marine player was still stupid enough not to place stuff on the table.

Also proof that Tau is OP!
What other army can win before first turn. Certainly not orks.

If someone pulled that move on me I wouldn't knock their sport points. However, posing for a photo with a giant grin while I was still looking it up with the judge? That's a different story.

Can only base it off the one photo and you posting a bragging post on it, but the real dick move seems to be your behavior afterward.

Tau can also lose before first turn.

I read a batrep about a Tau list that had an ethereal.

They lined their entire army against their own board edge, to get as much shooting as possible

His opponent, Alaitoc, got his ranger disruption fire (old rule) before the game started. Killed the ethereal, and all the Tau fell back, off the table.

This was mentioned earlier, but I really want this noticed by more people reading this thread:

If this was a 'dick move', does no one consider it a 'dick move' to leave your entire army off the board to deny 1-2 turns of shooting to a Tau army?

Q: How many of a specific demographic group are required to carry out a simple task?
A: An arbitrary number. One to carry out the task in question, and the remainder to act in a manner stereotypical of the group.

I disagree with being able to leave your entire army in reserve.

Oh, sure, that's also a dick move because it shortens the game. It's a good idea, but with less game to play it's less fun.

Preventing the game from ever getting to turn 1 is a dick move with extra penis. A good idea is you put winning about the fun of actually playing a game, but a dick move nonetheless.

You can checkmate in four moves in chess so long as your opponent makes the right moves for you also. Not much of a fun game there either...

I am completely against the banning of this move, for the record. It is right up there with limiting the FOC and scoring people's army compositions poorly if they bring too many of a type of unit (sorry Tyranids, you can't bring a list that stands a chance).

These things are biased against lists and biased against stupidity. There shouldn't be crutches issued to people in a tournament.

Any army "can" loose first turn. As shown by the space marines here.

So the correct rule is to ban players from placing their entire army in Reserves.

The Tau player deserved the win, because the Russian player gave it to him.

In any case, one doubts that any other player would make the same mistake in the future... If only to avoid being the next poster boy for stupid play.

FYI, the guy who won offered to play a friendly game after wards, but he still got the win for the tournament scoring. This has zero to do with the French player being a dick, he was a nice guy.

How is it any less of a "dick" move to put your entire SM Bike army in reserve against a Tau player, when you know you'll be going second (read the report), so the SM player knew he'd deny the Tau two entire turns of shooting in a 5-7 turn game.

It was a tournament, you're playing to win. The Russian player made a clear mistake while trying to gain a significant advantage before the game even started, and he lost.

They played a game after the fact for fun. How exactly is the Tau player a dick then?

The other guy was playing space marines. Thus a jerk imo!

I would call Gwar! a jerk for playing space puppies, but I think Fan Boi is a better term. I just hope he hears me before that Bandwagon he jumped on pulls away. :p

I don't see why either player did a "dick move".
You know what the other player has in their army before deployment.
Oversights loose you games, arguably these oversights (or the lack there-of) are what indicates a better player.
Most oversights are not this glaring.
I bet the marine player won't make the same mistake, thus he'll be a better player.

I don't see this situation as any different than winning a game of warmachine in 15 seconds.

The opponent made a crucial mistake, thinking he had a cunning plan.

He failed so he lost the game.

No different than an Ork horde being able to cover enough board to deny deepstrikes.

Bam, said the lady!

This is a fairly basic tactic. I'm suprised everyone hasn't heard of it before.

I had it come up 2-3 times with the old Guard codex in 5th edition. In all instances it was Khan all biker lists outflanking everything vs tons of infiltrating Guard infantry (Light Infantry doctrine in the old Guard dex). Set up blocking the board edges, they cant deploy, what happens? I want to say there was an inconclusive "what happens" thread about the issue in the rules forum here.

Never had it come up in a tournament, admittedly.

Even from a purely fluff standpoint, it makes some degree of sense. Reserves represent stuff coming in from other sectors of the battle. Without even a token enemy unit in this sector, nothing to stop all those infiltrating kroot from moving off and slowing the enemy down so much they simply dont arrive in time to participate in the fight on this sector.

Maybe it's a dick move... but so is putting an all-bike list in reserves vs Tau. Maybe that's why it's so funny. "You want to be a dick? Sure, okay. I'm going to be one too and auto-win."

*shrug*
