The other thing preventing a Necron attack on Mars are the other C'Tan. Why would the Deceiver or Nightbringer want more competition for their legions of zombie-robots? They're probably quite happy to leave the other Star Gods in stasis.

QFT. Why do you think there are only 4 C'thans left?

Well ,according to the Necron Codex, the Night Bringer consumed most of them. Also the eldar seem to have some idea of the ones that are left and never mention any others than the Night Bringer, Deceiver (think they refer to him as the Jackal god), Dragon, and the Outsider. If they're were any other all powerful star gods left after the night bringers rampage you would think the eldar would remember that kind of thing.

The eldar probably do remember, but they would never tell us!

The Void Dragon may not be escaping because he currently doesn't have any desire to. He's mostly dormant and waiting for the right circumstances to do so. A small part of him is probably aware, though, and is likely to realise that there is a powerful group of beings that worship technology and aim to replace all their flesh with superior metal parts. He may find it worthwhile to wait, absorb knowledge of their technology and see what happens; a few thousand years watching is nothing for a being millions of years old. And a combined force of humans and necrons, with new and differing technology, may give him an edge against his brothers.

Note, I'm not saying that the Mechanium is going to do what the necrontyr did, merely that there may be enough similarities to wait, conserve energy, and observe.

A machine spirit is the 'personality' a Land Raider or any other auto-assembled high tech device gets when.. after assembly... no one knows how to defrag the hard drive anymore, and its copy of a copy of a copy of a fragged operating system gets more and more 'characterfull' as the 10,000 years pass.

Alternatively, in an automated STC factory, the Mars priest does its 'activation' ritual, where he chants and dances and hops around the control room, and his final act of the ritual is headbutting the big bright red button labeled "start".

In short, we forgot all the technology because only the stoopid people were breeding, and 38,000 years have passed.

I believe the Dark Age of Technology was circa M20-ish (Can't be certain, I think there was a whole timeline in Horus Rising). In any case, it happened long before the Horus Heresy, as just prior to this, many Terran exploration ships went off into space before contact was lost due to the Dark Age. IIRC, it was finally ended when the Emperor went on his crusade to unite Mankind once and for all.

Sorry to better history buffs if this is way off. Most of my information comes from memory having read the first five Horus Heresy books.

If it weren't Eldar's decadence that was creating warp storms, the humanity would have never fallen into Age of Strife and imagine 15k years of technological advancement.

To summarise;
Mankind began on earth, and initially lived in harmony with nature. Some humans - shamans, witch doctors etc - were able to percieve the warp, and even the future, and shepherded mankind - but they foresaw a dark time in the future when the Chaos Gods would arise from the negative sides of the human soul, which was at the time rapidly growing in complexity. So, in ones and twos, drips and drabs, they all took their own lives out of a hope that somehow, their souls could recombine in the warp, and be reborn as one man.
This happened, he was born somewhere near modern-day Turkey I believe, and this entity lived quietly and secretly amongst us, aiding great scientists, appearing as prophet or warrior when the world needed a tweak. His primary goal through all this time was to get mankind out into space, and all spread out, in order to prevent the Chaos Gods from simply consuming earth and all the souls on it, ending mankind easily and yummily.
Eventually mankind was spread throughout most of the galaxy, with high technology levels all round, and separate complex political systems, all the things you might find in hard sci-fi or space opera.
Unfortunately, meanwhile the Eldar had reached such a technologically advanced level they were able to spend all their time trying to achieve heightened pleasure. The fact that Eldar have a greater presence in the warp than humans meant that this created a strong echo in the warp, which, like the other chaos gods, coalesced into one entity over an extended period of time. The tumult caused by this 'pregnancy' in the warp led to vicious storms, and for a good ten millennia or so, warp travel was as good as impossible, thus resulting in a complete lack of the necessary trade of materiel and information required to maintain a high technological level. (Imagine trying to make new Mobile Phones without Tantalum) .Combine that with mankind's squabblish tendencies (all the while feeding Khorne) and a good quote from Einstein: "I do not know how the Third World War will be fought, but I can tell you what they will use in the Fourth - rocks!" and you have a path from high technology to feral planets.

So, then Slaanesh wakes up, the Emperor decides it's time to leave Earth and stretch his legs, and the rest is history. He had, of course, previously imprisoned the Void Dragon on Mars in order to create the appropriate obsessive behaviours amongst the humans on Mars to preserve a great wealth of high-technology for him to tap into to equip his Great Crusade, meanwhile allowing Earth to go through war after war in order to give him just the right kind of soldiers to lead that crusade. I mean, what else was he going to do for a few thousand years?

In short, The Emperor Did It. And He Knows What You Said.

Simples!

P.S. read all the Horus Heresy books, especially Mechanicum and Horus Rising (not in that order).

Umm so your saying that the Emperor left Earth while the Necrons were still around and imprisoned a C'tan in Mars and returned to earth despite the fact that humanity were probably uni-cellular at that point?

Powerful psykers can teleport themselves through warp and the Emperor is a very powerful one so I think that he could reach Mars.

I say again, read Mechanicum.

*Spoiler Warning*

Roughly interpreted, the Void Dragon visited Earth, a long long time ago - and was kicked shempless by the Emperor. Then later in the book the Void Dragon is imprisoned on Mars. Not too hard to join the dots.
