see, I'd love to go, but $2000 IS WAY out of my price range. I'm planning the trip to adepticon, and it costs around $500.... which is alot for me.

Backing up sid, there are much better games to play competitively, with better fluff, better rules (objectively better, not an opinion), and lower entry cost. And many of them will/would pay for you to go to big events. If you've got the $2000, buy that much in lottery tickets and you'll probably end up better off.

Not really. Lottery tickets are in no way shape or form competitive.

...but you could win money? I'm just saying, if you want the thrill of good competition, there are a lot less expensive ways to get it. Hell, put the $2000 in your retirement fund even.

They do support the tournament scene with product support for local events, but they
do not seem to want the extra hassle of supporting a full blown tournament scene the
way Wizard supports Magic the Gathering. Instead of hiring people to judge their events
they simply give out product, which is cheaper overall than having people on the payroll.

One thing to keep in mind. The event is not the only thing that some of us will be doing. When we traveled to the UK GT finals - my wife, her friend and I drove up to Scotland for five days and had a blast. I am already planning something similar for Germany. We will probably make this a 7-9 day trip. So for those who think this is $2,000 wasted, I for one look at this as an opportunity to:

1. Go to a place that I have never been/desire to go to.

2. Play in a special event and meet new people.

3. Represent the US in an international event.

Go check out Berlin if you can. It's amazing. Lots of awesome beers in Germany as well. I can't help but think of the movie Beerfest with you and Moocher going over. I'm sure you will have the experience of a lifetime.

That's what I meant, I wish there was a full blown tournament scene. I wish they actually took tournaments seriously.

Hmmm because I'd be paying $2000 to play in a heat and have to pay another $2000 to go to the finals! Plus the armies are at 1500 points. IMO the lower the points level the more luck and list building play in the outcome. 1750-2000 is the sweet spot for me.

The ETC is 1750 points, so should I sign you up Asugradinwa?

I don't know what to play at Adepticon. I am thinking about Demonhunters.

Only if you are on the team Blackmoor. If I'm flying to Europe I want to have a good chance of winning the thing

This tournament has some severely slowed rules if I'm not mistaken. For example, Ghazkill Thraka [sic], Vulkan, and a few other special characters are banned, but Abaddon or your generic Lash Demon Prince are perfectly fine to bring.

Now if that's true then this is a pretty fail tournament. They're codex legal, where's the sense in banning them?

Now the event makes even less sense. To each his own, I suppose.

@GBF: I never claimed people played 40k to make money. Interesting that the guy who isn't going to pay a ridiculous amount to play an unsupported game gets called "daft." Like I said, if you want competition, play competitive Scrabble for free. Plus all the rules are provided and there won't be any surprises.

Altough I can't speak from a personal experience, several friends of mine have attended the whfb side of etc for a couple years in a row now and told me that the gaming part is absolute blast especially due to the team component (fighting for your country/team and all that ). I can't imagine why the situation would be different in 40k side as they are both held at the same venue & mostly the same organization.

Regarding whatever armyrestricions there's gonna be, remember that they are the same for all teams and also note that each player of the 8-person team needs to have a different army which makes things pretty interesting. (I don't personally agree/understand completely why they chose to ban those special chars in 2k9 but YMMV)

It's *TEAM* 40k.

What works on an individual basis doesn't necessarily work on a team basis.

Conceptually, the limitations are so that the 7 guys who don't (and can't) take Eldar aren't totally screwed if they end up facing the opposing team's Eldar army.

So I was just wondering how many people would be interesting to going to Germany to represent the USA?

Most people have trouble going to their local stores to play in tournaments, and only a few more are willing to fly to large events.

So who would be interested in flying for around 15 hours plus the 3 layovers for $1500, not including food and lodging, for the pride of representing the US of A in a few games of 40k?

lol

Blackmoor- I was thinking the exact same thing. I dont spend much time on Dakka but this was worth reading. I played you with my eldar against your witchhunters year before last at Ard Boyz in Baltimore. Got to meet Greg in Dayton the same year .

I agree though, will be interesting to see who follows through with this. I tell you this though, with the dollar to Euro exchange you will be lucky to only spend $2000.

I plan to play in some Euro events this year if I can time my trips correctly. My wife will be flying to Brussels and Nothingham area every month so I plan to head out with her. Plus I have the miles so it should be interesting. I may throw in my name for this thing though the rules seem interesting....

GBF- see you in Chicago

It seems kind of shady how the US team was put together. It's mostly Codex Toledo guys wif Shaun Kemp from Duh Boyz. These guys are good but is this the best the US can do? Definitely Marc and Bill should have been invited.

Well than just consider it a team of guys that are pretty good at the game and have the resources to go if that makes you feel better

I did not see that they were touting themselves as the best and its not an Olympic event so I dont think it really matters how they came together.

I still plan to hit one of tournies in the UK or Denmark this year though.
