Blasphemy aside, even just a replay of a penalty shoot out, which is how the game should have eneded would be great.

but theres no way fifa would allow it, its just too expensive to host a 10 minute penalty shoot out between two international teams. plus france wouldn't like to take any more chances against ireland.

However, Republic manager Giovanni Trapattoni does not expect Fifa to sanction a replay.

@malfred:
Those players can't touch the ball with their hands.
If you do, that's a violation of the rules.

The refs didn't catch it, and the game continued and swung in Frances favor immediately afterwards.

The player in question admits he touched it, but since the refs said nothing, the ball is still in play and it continues.

Something like that... I just find it hilarious though they got that wonderful picture.
And Football/world cup is a crazy huge deal for most I guess.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

Righto :

The world cup finals take place next year in South Africa. We've just finished playing the qualifiers to determine who gets to go. As part of this process Ireland and France had to play off against each other, 2 games, 1 in France and 1 in Ireland. France won the first game 1-0. In the 2nd game last night Ireland scored in the 33rd minute to level the tie. However then, deep in extra time France attacked and scored making it 1-1 on the nigt and winning 2-1 overall. One of the French players handled the ball -- see picks on the first page-- in the build up to this goal, which was not spotted by the referees and this has meant Ireland are not going to the finals next year.

Never understood why major sports organizations are so reluctant to using instant-replays in order to make sure the call is right especially in game deciding situations. Wasn't until a year or two ago that the NBA allowed refs to be able to review whether a player's shot was from the 3 point line or not.

Good point, though, the quantity of vomit tends to be higher in world cup years.

Im all for video replays, im a Middlesbrough fan! Little teams always get screwed.

But come on. A replay!? Thats madness, pretty much every single football match there is a large error on the refs part. If that happens it will start an alarming precendent.

If you got a replay everytime a referee didnt award an obvious penalty or handball, then Boro would play 300 games in a season, and Manchester United would never win the league!

Sucks for the Irish, but suck it up and move on. Refs screw up sadly.

Lets get video replays as a result of this though!

Oh and look on the brightside, you guys can support England instead.. i mean.. seeing as we are all on your side and everything..

We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.

It is more than that! If the ball did not touch Henry's hand it would have gone out for a goal kick, instead Henry's hand not only touched it but altered it's trajectory to allow him to keep it in play and score a goal. So it wasn't even a questionable or vague hand ball, it was a potentially game/world cup changing hand ball for both teams.

I disagree. American Football is a mixed bag with video replay but American Football is also better suited for it because it was full of lulls already. I would actually not like to see Football go that way. I do think two more side judges (to help monitor both sides of each half at all times for things like the New Mexico situation) and maybe (only maybe as I am unsure of this one) another field judge are needed. The better broadcasts get, the more obvious bad reffing becomes. I don't think they make more mistakes, they are just more obvious. Well, unless, like Keene says, "The fix is in."

In agree. The ref has to make his call based on what he sees. It's only a game, after all. Chalk it up, and remember that that dude is a liar next time.

When the French player headbutted an Italian in the last World Cup final the referee did not see this occur on the field, then watched it on the replay and immediately gave the French player a red card.

Red card is easier than a rematch.

Football is a very petty and dishonourable game, though, it seems to me. All the dives and cheating and stuff.

No offense but it's not like Ireland are the first team to be cheated out of the world cup.

Yeah it's a shame but so many teams have been cheated out of the world cup.

England - Argentina '86 sticks out...

Still doesn't make it right though.

Of course, as an American, that means I must say that soccer sucks, and football (real football... you know, the one where you do everything with your hands) is 10,000 times as good. I mean, football players could probably beat up soccer players, even, because they actually know sports.

Even with replay teams can be cheated out of the championship too. NHL (National Hockey League) Calgary Flames v. Tampa Bay Lightning Stanley Cup in 2004. Martin Gelinas of the Flames scored the cup winning goal in Game 6, but it was scooped out of the goal by the Tampa Bay goalie. Everyone was going mental, but the Refs ignored them. Tampa 'won' the cup in Game 7.

I sometimes wonder if the controversy stirred up in pro sports isn't intentional to get people to buy more merchandise, magazines, newspapers, etc. Why else would they always hire officials that need coke bottle glasses?

this may come as a shock to some of you, but those of us that enjoy a good game don't really care so much about who is playing as long as it is a good game.

There is more to sports than the petty closet-nationalism/whatever of it's lesser fans.

True but it is nicer to cheer for a team you are passionate about. Don't be a troll.

Here's an interesting note I found...

"There is precedent for the invalidation of such results. In 2005, the bureau of the Fifa World Cup organising committee reached a decision to invalidate the result of a World Cup qualification match between Uzbekistan and Bahrain on the basis of a 'technical error by the referee of the match'.

What about in 2006 when they fixed the matches so South Korea would reach the final stages? Italy had about 7 legal goals declared offside, and it got to the point where Vieri told the crowd to STFU when he scored because he didn't know if it would stick or not.

So then I can safely assume you have never been needlessly optimistic regarding something you would like to see happen even though, realistically, you know there really isn't a snowball's chance in hell in could happen?

Wow, dude, we're in a Off-Topic forum of a Wargaming websight. We're talking about our collective passion regarding another type of game. What we say on here really has no bearing on anything in the real world (or frankly beyond this tiny little thread) other than to serve that passion, whether needlessly optimistic or not.

And I need the clue?
