Good:
The miniatures in the ranges we've seen have improved for the most part, Skaven stand out as very good. Forgeworld remains a jewel in the crown of the GW interests.

Bad:
Attitude, the attacks on their own fanbase, the arrogance in price hiking clearly demonstrated in their end of financial year report, the threats to small indy companies. A company making toy soldiers that thinks it's Weyland Yutani. A company entirely convinced it can dictate to it's customers and not, as I strongly believe, the other way round. There is something stagnant and arrogant and in need of beheading at the core of the firm, it needs a shakedown because it's long lost it's edge.

Indifferent:
Space Hulk, meh overhyped and entirely overpriced. Planet Strike, bulky and flatpacked ugly terrain that you could buy from any of those ubiquitous Far East produced army toy bases.

I returned to 40k in 07 after a hiatus due to GWs attitude being incompatible with my expectations as a customer. I returned to find the mini ranges vastly improved and what I perceived as an improved attitude from GW, I was right about the first part and wrong about the second.

Good Stuff: IG HQ and HQ options, cool kit with really cool metal options (love the fleet officer)
Planet Strike another cool concept.

Bad Stuff: Price increases, the HQ Command Kit was the last GW I bought, I´m done with GW stuff I´m building an alternative and much cheaper IG army using 3rd company options.
GW´s hammer approach to marketing, the Black Box issue and now the BB debacle shows that GW doesn´t get/care about internet and fans.

When will GW start caring about us instead of trying to sell off AOBR marines and their variant marine codice to new players?
Will they when everyone gets sick of marines?

I don't mind marine variant armies.

I do mind a tiered system of support for armies that results in almost punishment for those that chose anything other than marines.

My principal anger towards GW is actually just the overriding arrogance towards the customers, that they are the ones with the whip hand and that the customer should be really really grateful that GW deigns to provide them the opportunity to purchase it's wildly overpriced merchandise.

The statement in the financial report that the plastics should be gradually moved to match the prices of the metals, when the metals were hiked to that high price under the guise of a 'tin crisis', is just daylight robbery and exploitative greed. It speaks volumes about just how much respect the company holds for it's customer, you and me.

I forgot, the Horrible stuff: The wave system. You get some miniatures with the army dex and have to guess if GW will, if ever, release the missing minis in the next wave.

You know, GW has been doing this long before there was a "wave" systems.

Remember when SM first got Drop Pods? Or the CSM Defiler was added to their list?

Right!

I would probably spend 700 to 1000 dollars on Warhammer Quest if it was rerleased next year.

I would like to particularly complain about Ko'Sarro Khan.

Why the Hell is he not on a bike?

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

Good

Most of their terrain kits.

Support for independent tournaments.

Some Support for FAQ answers as written by the community.

Bad

That weird looking cratered Terrain set.

Not having company run tournaments.

FAQ answers that tell you to agree to it before the game.

Yeah Ko'sarro khan is definitely a huge WTF? moment.. Total waste of time even developing him

Maybe hes a new line of models that dont follow their own fluff despite having an option

Lets see.. New BA book allows Dante to not have a jump pack despite he always does.. So they make a model with jump pack not included!

New chaos book.. New abbadon (terminator armor sold separately)

However, I'll give GW the credit that the new plastics they've made are so damn fine.

However, their codexes/army books give me pause.

They're fine, but 40k has seen 1 MEQ too many, IMHO.

As for Fantasy, Daemons is just so awful, it's depressing.

Good

Space Hulk.

Bad

Everything else they have done this year. Even the good stuff was bad because it was ridiculously priced.

2009 has gone down as year I finally cleared out even the desire to follow any GW games from my life. 2007-09 was the period I stopped buying anything but still *wanted* it. This year finally even the urge to splurge on GW has gone altogether now.

GW's 2009

Good Stuff

1. Plastic Miniatures

2. Space Hulk

Bad Stuff

1. The Codex/Army Book Cycle: too less output.

2. Pricing - 2009: price increases everywhere.

3. Planet Strike: unnecessary.

Ok Stuff

1. White Dwarf - but I dislike JJ's column.

2. Website

I wouldn't mind a tiered system if it wasn't the two tier system they hae at the moment i.e. supported and not supported.

If badly selling armies were put out to pasture in 'internet-PDF-and-Mail-Order-only-land' and revised (even if only to make them fit with entries from newer codicies). I wouldn't mind if Space Marines got a new chapter every month (that's 83 years worth of material BTW) if this was the setup.

Congratulations on giving GWS ideas for next year's mystery box - it's Warhammer Quest. The part they "have never done before" is charge $850 for it, cause they "heard tell people on the internets would pay that much".

yeah,
2009 for me.

The Good:
WD seems to be getting better.
1)They are showing peoples armies again- all be it studio type people's armies but it's still good.
2)How to paint articles, step by step 'eavy metal articles how they painted the studio mini's.
3)Also in the last two months, the Army of the Month didn't win!? Space Wolves Drew against Chaos Deamons and Skaven lost their game! This is could be the start of Battle Reports worth reading again?
seems like WD is listening to the fan base.

Space Hulk: bringing back a classic in such beautiful style!
Hopefully SH made a profit because I can't wait to see some other classics given this treatment.

ForgeWorld: the BlightDrone and PlagueHulk are awesome... it seems like FW can do no wrong!
I' love the drones so much I hope they are included in the next CSM/ Chaos Daemon codex's...

Plastic terrain the defence walls and bastions are awesome, but this leads us to the next bit....

The Bad:
Planet Strike this should have been soo much better, but it lacked support.I was so excited about the idea, but 1 month after launch No-One I know wants to play a planet strike game... No on even mentions it!? and Plastic BlastScapes!!! don't get me started...

Panic...

Ultimately. It was a GW year. they did some good things. They did some bad things. They made another bad army. They gave the online community a Golden Shower.

Strangely enough it's like I didn't just come back from a 3 year hiatus.

Going to focus a little bit on SW since I have only been trying to pay attention to them specifically.

Good:
Finally releasing the Space Wolves codex. I have yet to get it but I am just happy they finally got some love...even if it was an Ike Turner kind of love.

An awesome SW mini, WG with LC, to go along with the launch of the codex.

Bad:
Not releasing a new Ragnar mini to go along with the codex.

As has been stated, the general codex cycle of release.

Models that look like they are just lumps of pewter that conveniently look like something that could pass for as a mini(Lukas the Trickster, Vulkan Hestan...etc).

I'm back!
