Hmm...
Whilst I can agree with Gwar! that much of love is "fueled" by the need for the male sex to procreate, I still think there is more to that.
Whilst I am certainly too young to even begin to understand how love "feels" there is a certain feeling of attachment that certainly arrives after that "procreation" cycle. Sure, I can raise my kid to be one of the most well behaved, hard working, and honest kids out there but besides not wanting to mess it up there is a certain pride in seeing one's offspring accomplish themselves.
I don't know, as I'm nowhere near close to caring for someone outside of my family with strong emotions of "love"

Well writing a true love note would require being in love. Seeing as how Gwar! sees it as an artificial construct, I doubt he has ever been in such a state. Such cynicism in my generation... Automatically Appended Next Post: garret wrote:What about men who got a vasectemy but still love there wife/wives?
Just a note garret, you can still have sex after you get the snippy-snippy done. But yes, it is not going to help your attempts at procreation.

Vasectomy is a minor surgical procedure wherein the vasa deferentia of a man are severed, and then tied or sealed in a manner such to prevent sperm from entering the seminal stream (ejaculate). At no point are the males Testes removed. That would be Castration. Thus, the gonads remain active in hormone excretion, thus the desire to procreate is not lessened by a Vasectomy surgery. Automatically Appended Next Post: garret wrote:Or gay couples?
Homosexuality is currently a poorly understood phenomenon that occurs in multiple animal species. The cause is, as of yet, unknown, though one of the more prominent theories is that it is caused by an alteration in hormonal balance either during foetal development or through early life. In any case, the "Love" felt by two people of the same Gender is the same as that felt of two people of differing genders, a Social Construct upon which to codify and control the desires caused by biochemical reactions.

In a sense yes. Cynicism and shallow arguments are effective shields against the possibility of exploring the intricacies and complexities that define the human soul. They tend to make people very dense, and very closed minded.

Cynicism? Because I do not feel the same way as you I am a Cynic? You feel as though everyone is special and that humans have a "soul". I, on the other hand, hold a nihilist view of the species known as Homo Sapiens Sapiens. That does not make me "Dense and Closed Minded". If you can actually make a coherent argument rather than spouting off crap about how complex and special everyone is, I will heed it, and perhaps be convinced by it. However, all I have seen so far is utter drivel and nonsense from you, so I do not feel the aforementioned convincing will happen with any haste.

My wife and I just had our 8 year anniversary. What I did was design and print up a card of everything she meant to me. I then wrote some more things in it and gave it to her. She just about broke my back with the hugs she gave me.
I can tell you for a fact that most women think it's a very cool thing for a man to take the trouble to set feelings down on paper. It means the guy is serious.
If you're not really serious it might be best not to do something like that as hurt feelings can ensue later on. Well considering more then one person has presented very good arguments and examples concerning the nature of love, and your dismissal of those those examples as valid, I would consider that closed minded. Hence why I didn't even bother. Being closed minded isn't always a bad thing, but I will admit the phrase does have a certain stigma to it. I do love how you took my took my words mentioning the complexity and intricacy of the human soul and compared it to drivel and crap, that shows a level of tolerance worthy of the Saints I am sure. I will admit my phrasing was poor, I feel that I should more appropriately label your attitude as being hard of heart. Sorry about that... DiscoVader wrote:This right here. Neither of you has been engaging the other. The fact that things like love, or the soul, can be understood as social constructs does not change their nature, or capacity to compel action. There are many things in this world which are real for the simple fact that we make it so. Love is such a thing.
That said, love is a word which references a phenomenon widely perceived as a component of the human experience. It certainly isn't an arbitrary thing, no social construct is.
For my part, I've never written one. I don't tend to date the sort of girls that enjoy traditional gestures.

No, if you're going to reduce everything to basic chemical reactions, you really need to know something about those chemical reactions. The chemistry of love is very different to the chemistry of lust. Lust is driven by androgens and estrogents, love is driven by dopamine and low serotonin.
And again, just because something is driven by chemical reactions in the brain doesn't make in unreal, because everything is chemical reactions in the brain. The feeling of hunger is just chemical reactions, but it still sucks to be hungry and it still feels really good to eat after being hungry for a long time.

Right now the soon-to-be Mrs Stompa is living in the US and I am living in the UK.
Whilst we have travelled to see one another frequently in the two years we've been together, a large amount of time is spend apart.
Not a single day has there been a morning I have not woken up and found an email note waiting for me and not a single time have I not left a note for her waking moments.
I find I can express things to her far more easily in writing than in talking. I can tell her just how much she means to me, if I try telling her in my own voice I stop or alter it because I sound like I'm reciting some cheesy song or something.

I'm glad we have finally uncovered someone that knows the truth!
Since JEB has covered the subject so eloquently I shall re-emphasize using more common language. Birds faking love it when you write them a little note [not plagiarized you understand, although they won't know the difference will they!]. Even better a poem on a card for their birthday, brownie points a plenty for those that need them!
It can be a bit of an effort especially if you are not literary so don't waste them on any old strumpet or bike just the keepers on special occasions!
I gave my Mrs a card with a mix CD whith some on my favourite slower tracks that she would like along with a card/poem for her birthday years ago, she loved it. I think she really appreciated the effort rather than just buying something she might have wanted. Failing that splash out at De Beers or Tiffany's!

You did see the part regarding "artificial social constructs"?
In any case, that only applies to the example of the Elderly Couple.
The "Love" of a Parent towards the child is nothing but a chemical stimuli in the brain telling you "Hey, you've invested a lot of energy and resources into that thing, don't feth it up."
As a parent, here's the part where you realize Gwar has no clue on this subject.

I did sorta the same thing for my wife. It is insanely rewarding to do something of this nature and see the sheer amount of joy in her eyes when she reads it.

Trust me, the unbridled joy I have seen on a woman's face from receiving one, especially when she feels forgotten or a little down, is nearly indescribable. Women are by design romantic, and they love it when men put the extra bit of effort into making them feel special. BTW, I have written several love notes, I usually find the inspiration to write one after I am done reading Lord Byron's work...
Very well put.
Or, well, what he said.

Frazzled wrote:Frazzled's rules
*It can be stupid, thats ok.
*You can freely copy poems or saying from better writers, just note the real author. As long as it about that person then it is ok.
*An unexpected note is a great thing.
*Never use notes or flowers to say "I am sorry."
I'll use those rules!!!
Thank you

If I were to write a Love Note, it would end up just being a video of Cats mating or something.

Whats the point in love notes in the first place? I may know nothing about love, but I do know if you wanted to talk to someone, just do it-not that I ever have.
