I enjoy explaining to vegans about how plants can send out distress and injury signals that can be interpretted by other plants, and responded to. So why the arbitrary moral line? Also, should you intentionally immunocompromise yourself so you stop mercilessly slaughtering bajillions of parasites and bacteria?
Aren't you a bit of a hypocrite otherwise?
Ahhh, vegan nutjobs, truly the most amusing of all nutjobs.

When formed, PETA was an incredibly worthy cause. It went off the deep end with this nonsense and completely lost its message. Now no one cares.
Instead of focusing on treatment of animals in labs, and to extension, farms, it went berserk and became a laughing stock, and made those who support those causes laughing stocks. Now there is no real spokesman.

Tbh I'm not sure PETA has ever recovered from the madness of Heather Mills, well in the UK anyways. I remember when she was their most active voice/face at a time when most folks over here had really had enough of her.

You know in Australia the only legal difference between "free range" chickens and otherwise is an extra 5 feet of pen to run around in? Or so says my father who lives in Australia, anyway :p Regardless, that's the same thing as buying "green" items. The producers will do as little as possible, sometimes even nothing, so they can sell a product for more in attempt to ease your conscience.

My annual solution is to cover the turkey in this:
As for PETA, they've never really bothered me. Their message isn't necessarily incorrect in that, if you believe suffering to be bad, then causing suffering should be considered immoral. If causing suffering is immoral, then doing so without reason continues to be immoral. If you push this to the logical extreme, as there is no necessary reason to eat meat (beyond preference, which most people don't seem to consider sufficient to justify the infliction of pain), then there is also no reason to cause suffering. Therefore anyone who eats meat is immoral.
They trip up in two places:
1) Preference is sufficient to cause suffering.
2) There is a reason to eat meat beyond preference. Namely that soy beans can not be cultivated in sufficient numbers to fully replace the global demand for other proteins.
Personally, I think they'd be better off running health based campaigns that urged people to eat less meat, rather than none at all. They need to get away from the whole factory farm thing, as they've tainted their own image through extremism.

Over here we have the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). I'm not sure who else has it, but they aren't about vegetarianism and that gak. They're focused on animal welfare and health, and they run a lot of animal hospitals and pounds. They're pretty cool guys. Tehy caer for animals and don't afraid of anyfing.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Agreed. If God didn't want me to eat meat, he wouldn't have made it so delicious!
If we were all vegans, there isn't enough land in the world to grow enough food for everyone. Yes, we create a surplus now of crops, but that is because we eat meat, and don't rely on vegetable and plant matter alone.
Actually, this likely isn't entirely true. It takes a lot of food to feed an animal as it grows up to slaughter weight - the numbers I have seen show a ratio of 10 lbs of feed to 1 lb of animal. So in theory, you could raise 10x as much vegetable food per given area of land as you could meat.
In practice, well, a lot of land used for feeding free-range cattle is unsuitable for farming, so 10x is probably horribly optimistic. But I would be very surprised if you couldn't at least break even.

5 seconds away from googling this you are...
Organic foods, and Fair Trade foods actually have a real meaning. When you get a fancy energy drink that says 'Natural as all hell 101%', that means absolutely nothing. All the company had to do was put it on the label, and wait for people to trick themselves.
I far prefer Fair Trade to Organic, especially when I consider the difference in actual impact. Do I want a family in some random country to eat well, or am I more worried about having 1% more toxins enter my bloodstream, along with the healthy dose of smog I ingest each day.
Fair trade is much more important. If you want organic veggies, grow them in the soil yourself, it's builds character... so you can go out and buy fair trade instead.
