With the afro, if you decide to try again, go get a rag while the greenstuff is partially dry, and just lightly dab the afro with it. It'll give it a sort of rough texture. As it is right now, it's too smooth. It just looks like that Guardsman is wearing a huge ball of Swiss Cheese on his head.

And remember to do all your Greenstuff -before- you prime, as you'll have to prime it before painting.

Its a good idea mate maybe just lost in translation. I might change my mind when I see it painted, maybe.
It's probably more on the bad side of good!

You really need to prime those models before painting mate.
I realize these are probably your first models, and for first models they look well like first models.

There are plenty of good tutorials on this site for painting or gs work. read through them, take your time.

Too be able to enjoy the painting-modelling aspect of this hobby you just really need one thing to start with and thats patience.

There are no real "easyfastmagiczomg" method to get good looking mini's just patience and ofcourse practice.

A few easy steps to follow:

1:Clean the models from mouldlines and other junk with a file or some sand paper (or both).

2: assemble the models with glue (use it sparingly).
Use something like a toothpick to apply it.

3: to ease painting you could just glue the torso, legs and head together. then keep the arms and guns separated just make sure everything fits first without glueing it.

4: Prime it! if using washes prime it white makes picking out detail easier(atleast for me). and also makes it easier to cover with paint.

5: start painting. A tip for the paints is tho thin them with some water, this is especially true when working with GW foundation paints.

When the colours are thinned it might be hard to cover but thats no problem just put on a few more coats (1 or 2 depending on how much you have thinned that paint.)
When the cover is good leave to dry.

6: Washing, use the washes but apply them with a small brush in the recesses of the figure, takes a while longer but the results are better.

after those six steps you got yourself some nice looking figures you could add more steps like highlighting/drybrushing but for now i think those 6 steps
would improve your guard greatly.

I hope you will have a great time in this great hobby.
Just remember Patience and Practise goes a long way.

GL and HF!

I thought you said you did prime them...

When people offer you help or advice, be honest with them. It's the only way you'll improve.

That said, buy spray primer. It only takes a few seconds to apply. Surely you can spare that for quality. It'll actually make painting faster too, as the paint will stick better and dry faster. So you're actually making painting take longer by not priming them.

But what's this then?

Vulkan_He'stan wrote:wow I feel bad every time I post something i get told it look like bare plastic I did an under coat of codex grey for the hundredth time!!!!!

Give em' a spray. You'll find that Krylon actually makes some decent plastic sprays, and they do have a flat grey in a near-codex-grey shade. It comes out thicker than GW's spray though, so just be careful if you decide to go that way. Otherwise, pick up some primer and give them a coat first. your results will improve tenfold.

It still looks far too smooth in terms of texture, but it certainly looks better (If a little out-of-scale) than I expected.

Now strip those minis and prime em!

If you want some help with painting greys I would be happy to give you some advice or even a simple step by step, I only say this because although your minis do show promise and character, they are lacking depth of detail. I don't want this to sound condercending, in just offering help. A wash of 50/50 black and Scorched brown with a rehighlight of the base grey would bring out the detail a treat. You could go even further and add a final thin highlight of the base grey mixed with bleached bone or Dheneb stone.

It does take time, patients and practice to progress tho, so don't expect to be perfect first off.

The afro looks silly. Also, the greenstuff has to many 'lines' it it when two separate parts where joined.
As for the painting, first mix codex gray and black 1:1. This will give you a VERY dark mix. Great for a base coat color. Color the whole mini except for skin. Nest, highlight everything except the most recessed areas of the model with a 2:1 mix of codex gray and black. For the next highlight, and final, just use pure codex grey on the most raised points. Now, for the actual camo part, take the 1:1 mix again and add small splotches of thin paint in many different areas. Layer it on slightly to you get a good solid color with no loss of detail. Then, take fortress gray or astronomican gray and then do more splotches on different areas but in thin layers. Make sure the base color still shows though and remember, it is clothe and has a pattern, not complete randomness. Also, I would add a mechrite red or red gore to he flak armor and the shell of the gun. That way, the two colors complement each other and really make the model look good.

It would be wise to primer your guardsmen black before you paint them.

Your colour scheme is a little too grey for my liking, too similar to the colour of the original plastic. Otherwise, cool.

Afro is amazing good one. And amazing paint job.

"Straight Fething Silver" Tanith first and only

I have a reputation, Modile, a reputation as a fair, honest man who treats his soldiers well and supports them in the face of darkness. Potentially, that reputation makes me soft. It seems I understand failure and forgive it. Some, like Kowle, believe me to be a weak commissar, not prepared to take the action my rank demands. Not prepared to enforce field discipline where I see it failing. I am an Imperial commissar. I will enflame the weak, support the wavering, guide the lost. I will be all things to all men who need me. But I will also punish without hesitation the weak, the incompetent, and the treasonous.
I am a Commissar. I am empowered to deliver justice wherever I see it lacking. I am empowered to punish cowardice. I am granted the gift of total authority to judge, in the name of the Emperor, on the field of combat.
