40k is Space Fantasy, not Sci-Fi, so chainsaw wielding super soldiers riding wolves is perfectly acceptable.

No Thunderwolf Cav? Why would Space Wolves be out done by some backwoods IG unit?

That's a valid point but surely you can't get much more high volume than multi-purpose HQ kits? If a Scout Landspeeder is profitable enough to get a plastic kit then a Wolf Lord/Wolf Priest/Rune Priest sure as hell is...

Except of those 3, each one already has a pre-existing model or can easily be kitbashed from the normal Troop boxes.

The item you compared it to(Land Speeder Storm) has multiple purposes, given that it can be taken by any/all Chapters from the 'standard' Codex Space Marines.
Wolf Lord/Wolf Priest/Rune Priest would all involve such heavily specialized iconography that the model could *only* be used in that one role, and you'd end up with significant wastage of sprue space for the other bits.

A better comparison would have been to say that if Games Workshop were to make a Dark Angels Commander boxed set in plastic, why not a Wolf Lord kit.

Yes the Land Speeder Storm has lots of uses but how many people actually bought one? You could pretty much guarantee every SW player getting at least one HQ kit if they released one.

At least one doesn't make it high volume. Every SW player has at least 2 or more Grey hunters squads, that is high enough volume to make new plastics. The generic SM commander box worked because you could sell it to every SM player and some Chaos players. Making a specific box for a sub faction is much riskier.

Not really. HQ kits, as has been mentioned, are already there in the Wolf Pack kit. Little snip here and there perhaps to improve dynaism, but as is I can easily make a passable Roger and Eric out of it. Well, barring Erics Crozius, but that's not hard to convert at all.

Question is the comparisson of Space Wolf players to Space Marine players. If it's 4-1 for Space Marines for example, and only a third invest in a Storm, then it will still outsell a Space Wolf specific Character kit.

While this is an easy comparison I do not think the equation is that simple. As mentioned before it is not that easy to make a WL, RP, RP, BL or Champion stand out from the rest of the kit Wolves due to them being quite blinged up already. If there had of been a 4 pack Command box. I for one would have bought 2-3 boxes. Why? 1 to make all my key characters in TDA. 2 to make all my key characters in power armour. 3 to make my BL's & Champions stand out that little bit more. I think the Command box would have sold as well as the SW TDA box & I don't think it would have sold just to SW players. If there had of been wrist mounted Storm Bolters, double head Frost axe etc, others I am sure would have taken an interest & even the Chaos gods may have liked some of the stuff. The online plastic bits retailers would have also had a field day. Yes you can chop up and make the parts you want to a fashion but to be honest most pictures I have seen of conversions (not just SW) look okay but not quite the ticket. The only real good conversions I have seen have included some green stuff wizardry which to be honest the majority of us do not have the skill inc me.

Plastic TWolves? Nah, can't see it. A couple of metal ones maybe, and maybe FW will make some beautiful 9and even more horribly expensive) resin ones.

I know this will upset some purists, but apparently new plastic boars (for WHFB orc riders) will be here in a few months - thunderpigs, anyone?

I think that new Razorgore put them in a coma, so don't expect them to wake up soon.

Space Marines riding on Wolves could have been a really awesome idea.

As it is, the fact that the Thunderwolf is roughly the same size as the Marine himself makes it look like a fat kid riding a toy pony.

TWolf Cav is yet another opportunity for 3rd-party sculptors to profit from gaps in the range. And hopefully 3rd-party TWolves won't look like enthusiastic lolcats.

Infinity: Way, way better than 40K and more affordable to boot!

And then gave him the single most nonsensical weapon to have on such a mount - gauntlet-mounted blades. You can just see him now, Wolfy McWolfrider or whatever his name is, wading into combat and then, at once, all his opponents take two steps away from him. What's he going to do? He can't reach. He certainly can't get off the wolf without causing it harm (and obviously he had to have help getting up there for the same reason).

Such a stupid model...

I don't think the dual Wolf Claws are that nonsensical in game terms as the increase in attacks and the ability to re-roll to hit or wound ability make them quite dangerous. When you look at Canis his claws do appear a little longer than standard ones and give plenty of scope to swipe heads while the Wolf thrashes at the enemy although Grots maybe a bit of problem. Funny thing is I always thought Lightning/Wolf claws were retractable but now I guess I may have it wrong. Hell even a foot mounted SM with dual claws would have issues. The more I look at the Wolf cavalry the more I like their stats, they can also be buffed quite easily. Looking at basic 5 TWC + mounted WGBL + 2 Fen Wolves being able to kick out 42 CC attacks when assaulting (36 @ S5) is pretty outrageous. I really hope they do bring out a plastic kit for them.

I think the complaint is that a cavalry fighter (albeit one with an unusual and particularly bitey mount) generally needs to be armed with reach so they can hit more of an opponent than just their heads. If you can only strike at a small part of an opponent, then they can concentrate their defensive efforts on that area. Claws are pretty much extremely close range weapons, more like knife fighting than sword fighting.

Historically, I think real-world cavalry used a lot of spears, with shorter weapons as backup. Cavalry sabers seem to be generally shorter weapons., but they're still swords and the curve was intended to make them more manageable on horseback.

Of course, mounted cavalry with only sabres have been of little value in the real world for decades due to accurate and rapid-firing projectile weapons, but 40k has a deep-set "Drive closer so I can hit them with my sword!" mentality, so we have to live with that.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

Just wondering if there were any whispers out there of Thunderwolves being on route anytime soon?

I think the argument against plastic TW's is now out the window with the release of the Bloodcrushers. I would quite happily pay the same price or even a little more for 3 TW's.

I thought that Forgeworld were definitely not doing thunderwolves because Citadel might. Given that the High Elf chariot comes with horses and lions I can easily see Space Wolves getting a bigger wolf as a mount but that it wont be as big as a Juggernaut that way it could be used for goblin chariots or goblin warbosses.
