Couple points:
1. On 5 Lootas. I run two units of them. They have a 48" range. I abuse that. I put my Lootas 2" apart from each other to minimize the danger of templates. If my enemy wants to fire at them, they are going to have to use 36-48" weaponry. Lascannons, missile launchers, autocannons.....all the same stuff that can hurt my trukks, and my battlewagon side armor, and insta-pop my deffkoptas. The point of 5 Lootas to give your enemy hard choices about what to fire at. The point of 5 Lootas is also to provide light transport defense. A unit of 5 Lootas will get 10 shots on average, and generally get one glance, or a pen....lucky rolls will do better. That's a Valkerie or a Vendetta that isn't shooting at you. You could do better. If you hit side armor on a predator, that's some damage there. That's a manticore possibly getting shaken or worse. I don't need to explode it gleefully, I'll settle for shaken. Weapon destroyed would be great! My Lootas typically get their points back, and if my opponent prioritizes them with their long range firepower over my transports? Ok. I can live with that. 4+ cover save and as likely to stay as not.
2. Gretchin: The worst part of a mechanized list is the seize ground or capture and control mission where you have to decide to either abandon your objective(s) and go get the enemy objective, or split your forces and keep a trukk full of boyz or a battlewagon full of boyz back on your objective. This is where the gretchin come in. I sport a 10 man gretchin unit with a runtherder in all my lists now because its a 40 point unit that is happy to go to ground if the enemy even THINKS about shooting at them. They exist to hold objectives on my backfield so that the other 1960 points of my army can trundle forward screaming and yelling.
3. Speaking of the other 1860 points....my current list is running a diversified nob squad. I will be blunt: I am unconvinced that they are worth their points. My nob unit...I could almost buy two boyz units in battlewagons for the cost of my nobs doing the same. However, I'm still running them for now.
My list:
Ghazghkull
KFF Mek
Diversified Nobs, Dedicated BW transport
17 Boyz
12 Boyz/trukk
10 gretchin
5 Lootas
5 Lootas
Burnas
Deffkopta
Deffkopta
Deffkopta
Battlewagon
Battlewagon
Good mix of anti-tank in there from koptas and Lootas, and deffrollas for heavy lifting. Rokkit buggies are worth your time to explore for a fast attack choice instead of a third deffkopta - they benefit from the KFF and can do great things for directing traffic when you're playing against enemies with melta / assault units / thunderhammers. You can physically block them off.
