I love your kroot. Is the purple / Blue Owl a Roger Dean / Psygnosis reference? Or is it just a coincidence?

Not at all, just a coincidence. I wanted to break up the earthy tone of the Kroot and put in something a little more vibrant, without looking lurid. I thought the blue worked rather well, but that could just be me. Thanks for the comment, I'll have to try to update this more often!

A quick, small update: I purchased a box of necrons for their kitbashing potential, and I saw a possible use of them for bulking up my "fire warriors" and "pathfinders". Let me know what you think!

I basically flipped it upside down, cut a bit away, and popped some green stuff between.

My greenstuff-fu could use some work, but I don't think the front turned out that badly, it was a fairly simple job.

The back is pretty hideous... I'm hoping that paint will change this guy for the better.

I'm thinking of taking the shoulderpads and leaving them on, using them as a place wires can come out of and attach to whatever gun I decide for the squad to hold, but we'll have to see!

Another quick update: The green stuff has dried and I've messed around with the necron shoulderpads that come out on the side. Originally I was going to have some wires coming out attached to his gun, but the angle was very awkward. Now I've put in some pieces of sprue...I don't know what it's supposed to be, but it certainly looks interesting! Let me know your opinions.

Here's another view:

And a scale shot next to a buddy. They stand just about the same height, which was something I was worried about from the start.

The conversion looks good enough for my tastes. My first thought on seeing that piece of sprue were Energy Booster of some kind, maybe a power source for the armor, etc... The posibilities are endless.

But I like it, and if you like it, let it be

I really like these kroot, always thought they were a great looking model set and your paint job definitely does them justice.
on the necron parts, so long as you keep away from making them 'necron-like' ie glowing from the inside, too metallic etc (cant think of a better term lol) then they look great.
keep up the good work, and dont worry about long breaks, progress is still progress

Hello all, another quick update.
I decided to do some painting on a few models, and now am at stage 5: Skin tone with 1:1 Vomit Brown and Vermin Brown.
Here's the pics:

And a comparison shot:

The first is a skin-tone done kroot, the second is the one in the previous pictures, the third is in Stage 4, and the 5th is in stage 3.
Thanks for watching!

I thought I'd do something different for a change and post an army list for these guys. It isn't the correct forum, but I thought that I'd rather have all the stuff about my Kroot on the same thread, so here goes.

Nightwatch's Kroot

HQ

Shas'el - Fusion Blaster, Missile Pods, Multi-tracker - 79

Troops

Fire Warrior Team - 6 Shas'la, Pulse Carbines - 60

Kroot Carnivores - 20 Kroot, 12 Kroot Hounds, Shaper, Armour Saves - 264

Kroot Carnivores - 20 Kroot, 12 Kroot Hounds, Shaper, Armour Saves - 264

Kroot Carnivores - 10 Kroot, 2 Krootox Riders, Shaper, Armour Saves - 170

Elites

Crisis Team - 2 Shas'ui, 2 Missile Pods, 2 Fusion Blasters, Multi-tracker, Target Lock - 108

Crisis Team - 2 Shas'ui, 2 Missile Pods, 2 Fusion Blasters, Multi-tracker, Target Lock - 108

Crisis Team - 1 Shas'ui, Missile Pods, Twin-linked Fusion Blaster - 55

Fast Attack

Pathfinder Team - 8 Shas'la, Devilfish, Seeker Missile System, Disruption Pods, 2 Seeker Missiles - 221

Pathfinder Team - 8 Shas'la, Devilfish, Seeker Missile System, Disruption Pods, 2 Seeker Missiles - 221

I know that it's a little risky these days to run a list without any heavy support, but this is in essence a fluffy list, not really designed for tournaments or anything. I wanted to hold to the "as much Kroot as possible" feeling, and have all the other models convertable as Kroot.

Tactics with this list are fairly straightforward: the large Kroot Squads stay in reserve to outflank, or hide in a forest if there is one. The smaller Kroot Squad takes a Devilfish, the Fire Warriors take the other one. On my first turn, I light up the enemy's most dangerous transport vehicles and send all the seeker missiles at them, using the leftover markerlights to guide my suits' missile pods if the tanks are still standing. On a good day, this will mean 3-4 transports destroyed or immobilised on the first turn, on a bad day, maybe not even one. At any rate, the Kroot are more than able to take out any infantry and footsloggin' goodness when they come in, with my crisis suits dancing away from said infantry until the Kroot arrive. I also have a compulsory suicide Fire Warrior unit, to disembark from the vehicle while it skims away. If it fails to pin the approaching enemy, I'll have it assault hopelessly or just block the path to my suits and fish for a little while. The solo suit will likely be dropping in, but I imagine I'll keep the other suits on the ground from the start, so I have a bit more anti-tank readily available in the first few turns.

Update: I got access to some super glue, and glued these bad boys together:

The picture doesn't show it that well, but there are HUGE mold cracks all over the place, mainly around the rider's waist. Some green stuff was applied, but we'll have to see if it did the trick after I've primed it.

How are you going to paint the knarloc? Same skin tone as the kroot? Or something darker?

I'm planning on going with the same scheme, and seeing how it compares. I love the krootox model so much: all those wonderful recesses and ridges to add shading and texture to! I'm going to try to really blend the different colours together, but we'll see how it goes. If I don't like it when it's done, I'll buy some paint stripper for the first time, and dump it in, along with a lot of other old marines and such that I can't stand looking at anymore.

Of course, this guy isn't getting painted for a little while: there's still snow on the ground and it's hovering around 2-4 degrees Celsius over here. My primer says it should be at least 15, which isn't happening for another week at least, if I'm lucky. In the meantime, I primed a few models before the winter, so I'll keep working on those.

Thanks for watching!

Just a little pic of the army as it stands now, in all 1000 points of glory (or lack thereof). I took the pics before I went off to fight a friend's Dark Eldar, and boy was it messy.
Anywho, here we go:

As you can see, most of the models are poorly painted Space Marine stand ins. It is my aim to replace them all with kroot models by December. (Which is giving me a lot of time, but when you see when I started this topic, you may have a different view) Wish me luck, and I hope to have some more progress tomorrow or Friday!

Have you considered asking to move this to the P&M forum here on dakka?

Now, that's an idea! Perhaps soon. As soon as I get to three pages worth of material, I'll get it moved.
At any rate, I have another small update.
Here's the first Fire Warrior, in all his glory. I still might add some wires going from his side vent to his gun, but I can't make up my mind.

I think the gun is a little awkward, and hopefully I'll find some nice bits to put on it that will make it look more like a gun and less like a club.
Comments, questions, criticisms, complaints, queries, and qabalas welcome.

Oh yes: and hopefully I'll have a battle report posted up here in the next few days, with 90% of the models pictured as blank bases or stand-ins for counts-as models. Weird, huh?

It looks great! The wiring from the vent to the gun sounds very interesting. Maybe add a small scope to the gun, some ammo clips (though I think the wire conected vent will fullfill that task) and other usefull bits.

also agree on the wire/other accessories, they always make model more unique IMO
cant wait to see your paint job applied to the 'fire warior' either

Not quite yet: I'm thinking orange and green scales on the lizard-thingy. My main question right now is: should I green-stuff the face to make it a bit more beaky? I'm caught between making it a kroot-gene animal and leaving it as a Pech lizard.

hmmmm, well i was under the impression that by this stage most of the life-forms on Pech were kroot-gene animals so id say make it beaky, but thats just me. I also would never be able to do it but if ur confident about it then give it a go

Hrm...that first picture looks way out of proportion (the kroot is much smaller IRL). However...I'm still not sure. On one hand, the heads are pretty ugly as it is already, but on the other hand, I don't want to make it any worse.

I decided to upload some better photos, with a bit more detail and a little less finger.

My thoughts so far are that I should do away with the whole front of the head, and make it all smooth. The transition from scale to beak looks terrible in my opinion, and I would be better off just to make the beak and have it end abruptly at the part of the mouth where those sinews can be seen.
Comments?

hmmm, i like the lower jaw but i agree with the upper, i personally didnt think the scales on those heads were so big!
maybe you could try just extending where the teeth are in the upper jaw but as a flat surface rather than huge fangs (if any of that makes sense)
otherwise, the model as a whole looks great Nightwatch, and props to you for giving it a go, i know i wouldnt

I really like your project, kroot are one of the coolest things about 40k. I love the paint scheme, I think they look genuinely scary and I make have to copy you paint scheme for a future project. What paints are you using? I think dark orange skin with light orange scales will look good, the mud wash could come in useful for that. If your worried about the scale transition, you can always green stuff in the gaps between the scales close to the beak and create a smother transition. Personally, I would say that the creature is from a different planet, kroot mercenaries get around the galaxy a bit so buying one in the foreign market does sound to far fetched, and saves you the effort of green stuffing the models.
