Thanks for the replies!

I haven't got very far with the lizard (not anywhere, to be honest) but I did try to work on the rider a bit. Here's what I've got:

The weapons he is holding are basically some Ork shootas, with a few bits chopped off. I'm going to count them as either fusion blasters or flamers, I'm not quite sure yet.

Ahh i see now, thats not a bad plan, and if it comes to it, they look a bit like plasma rifles too.
looks good though, proportion-wise and the posing are both excellent

Is he going to be standing on the dino like that? It's not too hard to turn him into a rider. I made a kroot cold one rider myself, I just split the legs apart and GSed the gap (picture in my scavvies blog at the bottom of page three). I didn't bother changing the head of the dino as I'm not tooooo concerned about the fluff side and, anyway, my kroot guy's been away from the home planet for a while!

Yeah, I would strongly advice that you follow the above advice and have the guy riding it. Just a couple of small cuts going from the groin outwards and then fill in any gaps with green stuff, judging from the beak you did you should be able to do it easy.

@Revenant Reiko: I never thought of that, I guess that's another weapon they could count as. I'm going to have a hard time deciding.

@Scrazza: Yup, I finally caved in and got it moved. Don't know why I didn't do it earlier, just lazy I guess.

@jackanory, sHOEbOX: I'm going to be making a few of these guys, and most of them will be riding. With this one, I actually found the legs already bent in that somewhat leaping position from an older project I never finished, and decided I'd make this guy.

This one is Crazy Pete. For those of you who play Tau, you know how insane you have to be to take flamers on a battlesuit, so you can see why I call him that. I've played a few games with a battlesuit configured that way, and had relative success. By that, I mean that he dies every game but usually makes up his points so it's all ok!

Oh yeah, and @jackanory: sweet stuff on your blog. I see you've got a lot of sculpting skill, any tips you'd like to throw at me?

Well, I'm back.

There's been a small amount of progress lately - mostly I've been playing games with a largely proxied army, but my opponents don't mind, so that's okay. I figure it will take me another $700 to buy what I need to complete a decent sized army (hopefully around 1850 points) and as many hours, if not more! There's no doubt that I work extremely slow, but hopefully this will help:

I picked one of these up at the local DeSerres, and is it ever fun to play with. I've put a basecoat of bestial brown on my first lizard with it, and I'm finding it very runny - not too great for detail work. Most of the time is spent pushing the paint around the model, not spraying. I'll have to experiment more with different thicknesses, as I may have watered the paint down too much.
At any rate, here's a couple of pictures of my progress so far.

As you can see, I decided to plow right into making some more lizards for my "suits" to ride. I'm thankfully not short of basing material (I found a lot of useful techy-looking bits from an old WWII anti-aircraft gun set, and the pieces have lasted me quite a while, though they're all used up now). I think I may have overdone the green stuff beak on more than a couple of the lizards, they look quite comical. I tried to model one with its mouth shut, but I didn't try closing the mouth before applying the green stuff, and as a result it has a very prominent jaw. With paint it might look a bit better.

I've also modelled the top half of a couple more "Fire Warriors". The one on the right might need some touch-up work, though.

Comments and criticism welcome. The more input I get from Dakka, the more motivated I will be to work on this project - finding the time is never easy.

I thought I'd add a few pictures of the goofy beaks I made for these guys.

As you can see, the closed-mouth lizard looks ridiculous. His mouth is much too large when compared to the others. However, I'm tempted to leave him that way and see how it turns out with paint, as you never really know until you see the finished product.

Oh, and a few larger army shots of most of the WIP models to date.

Here's a quick shot of my first Fire Warrior's back - I still need to paint him, but he has the basecoat and a wash, so I thought I'd give a little glimpse into how these guys will be painted. I'm not planning on making the metal that much brighter, a few highlights should finish it. The skin tone, however, will brighten up the model considerably.

I've been working on ideas for hounds as well, because they are much too expensive for my tastes. I am going to need 36 of them, and buying 18 packs is going to put a serious strain on my wallet. Here's my alternative plan:

Oooo a kroot army! I've just started my own tau force and am hopefully going to get my first tester kroot done tonight. I'm liking your colours you've chosen and loving the use of cold ones! May have to swipe a few ideas if you don't mind! As for your hound proxy, I think it's a good idea. Will you be making him 4 legged?

I'm not sure about the "hound" - I may put a couple of arms on, but I think it unlikely that he'll become a quadruped. The posturing of the Skink models doesn't lend itself well to fourleggedness.

An update: Those airbrushes are crazy hard to use! Here are a few pictures of my attempts:

Well? What do you think? If anyone has any pointers to airbrushing, send me a linky!

I like the lizardman as the hound, the size is perfect. It fits well with the larger ridden lizards. The GS beaks loot good, too. The pull the group together perfectly.

Thanks! I was having a lot of trouble with finding appropriate models, when I found a few of the skinks lying around and went

Incidentally, your ork terrain is one of the most inspiring threads I've ever seen.

Hello, all! I'm back, with a little bit of news.

I started university this week, and boy is it tiring. I had an 18 hour day - a few hours sleep - then part time job for another 9 hours - then a few more hours of sleep - then back to school again. Today is my first quiet day, so I tried out a few methods for painting that bloody great big lizard.

At first I tried to paint a new coat of vomit brown, but I tired of that pretty quickly and realized I'd never really have any success that way, so I gave up and drybrushed the whole thing. You can still see the part on the head and leg that I painted entirely - but that's ok, I'm sure it will get all fixed up with the application of the next coat.

Then I did a coat of vomit on another one - nothing special, but it didn't take me as long this time so I suppose I am getting a little faster. I still hate doing the hands, though.

Enjoy.

WIP - Second suit in the making.

To make this one I bought a box of Seekers and stole the legs - they were in a pretty good pose and they're similar enough to Kroot legs to pass off with a bit of sculpting on top. I tried just manipulating Kroot legs and it was no good - the darn things don't contort properly into a position that I like. These ones here were a little small, but with the help of a candle I forced them wider, and they fit pretty well on the saddle now.
