Aye, the old lifta does look better, tho this one is still awesome

Anyone else feel like those tau mean we get a codex next year? That phased ion gun thing reminds me of some sort of medium strenght lance weapon, like 36" Str 6, ap 2, heavy 2 kind of gun

I read this newsletter and was deeply disappointed. I knew FW was working on some aftermarket stompa stuff, and was expecting awesomeness (my wife got me a Stompa for Xmas which is as yet unopened).

What I was not expecting was how... unimpressive the stuff was. The close combat arm looks kind of spindly and is not an improvement on the existing CC arm - actually, I like the default one better. The belly gun is "meh". the lifta-droppa is not at all what I expected (and looks like another spindly arm), and the head, which was what I looked forward to the most... is only slightly better then the existing one, and way, way overpriced.

I mean, I knew it was going to be expensive, cause it's FW, but $50USD for a head? It's only like 3 pieces! Sigh.

That being said, those Crisis suits are pure win on both price and looks.

I can and will build better than both the Stompa and the poor ork helicopter.

Someone at FW isn't getting the ork aesthetic very well. After the Mega Dred and the tanks, this is a pity.

I think I must be one of the only people who actualy likes the Stompa upgrades!

After seeing them and buying them at the FW open day I can safely say that they are much better in the flesh/scrap.

Whilst I appreciate it's each to their own, I do feel that FW were damned if they did and damned if they didn't. The very nature of an Ork force is cobled together, looted junk which somehow works, this tends to attract gamers who are keen on converting. I think the upgrades are a nice addition to the range, I am sure that any who aren't that keen will be able to come up with equaly impressive creations of their own

It's not that I don't like them, per se. OK, that's not 100% true - I don't like the arms. But the head, I sort of do like. It's just that there is a correlation between how much I like something, and how expensive it is per degree of me liking it. I like it a little more then the existing head, but it costs way, way to much for how much more I like the existing one. $50USD would buy me a whole other unit which I'd like more then the +x enjoyment I'd get from the different head. (since I'm never going to play Apocalyse, special rules don't count).

Quoting for effect.

The only way FW would get the complaints to go away is releasing a catch-all set of bitz that are used to create the parts individually.

In which case, they might as well hire Lego to do it.

Bollocks
As an ork player myself and what the other ork players who don't like these upgrades (and the criticism from those that didn't like the 'chinook') is that the upgrades and the chinook are too skinny, too weedy.

All the ork aesthetic, whilst junkyard is solid and full of 'armour welded onto more armour'.

Orks do overkill not threadbare.

The Ork helicopter was made by the Blood Axes, right?

They tend to mimicking human tech--for all we know, they ripped the design from seeing a PDF equivalent.

However, I'm not sure what the complaint about the arms is. I really don't get it--because they look the same as the Mega Dred, for the most part, just without the goofy pauldrons.

AGREED. Even the junkiest stuff GW's put out has a pretty solid silhouette when it comes down to it; Orks aren't exactly running low on metal! Where this "everything orky is a delicate-looking pile of crap" theory came from I'll never know.

(I like the classic design better, 'course, and I will shamelessly link to my version here because I'm a proud papa)

This.

My complaint with the arms is that, in addition to being very overpriced even by FW's standards, is that they are simply too flimsy. The close combat are is a lot more frail looking then the existing arm, and is not an improvement. Generalizing that people don't like anything FW does is simply inaccurate.

For example, look at all the new tanks, the Mega Dredd, the new Big Mek. These prove that Forge World understands the aesthetic better then anyone else, sometimes even better then GWS it seems (as it can be argued that they influenced the new GWS kans/Dredds). The skinny arm upgrades fail to follow that aesthetic.

The Mega Dred is a substantially less bulky model overall, so they are more in proportion. And, of course, they do have the goofy pauldrons, which makes them look bulkier.

On the other hand, I've never seen a stompa conversion with the sort of big, beefy, Trogdor-like arms your comments made me think of. Just doodling with the basic silhouette leads me to believe that it'd look bad, though.

The supply does not get to make the demands.

SoCal, USA!

The problem with the plastic Stompa is the chest is too broad. It should be narrower, and then the arms would fit better.

That said, doubling up the plastic arm would look better.

Love the new tau suits the XV-9 series is a huge improvement. Gotta say though kinda dissapointed with the range I've heard on most of the new weapons, I was always a missle pod/plasma rifle fan with the 24-36 inch range from what I've seen it's 12-24 inches which isn't so bad but still exposes the suits to some withering short range firepower and counter assault issues.

Fresh from Salute 2010, the noo orky stuff all nicely painted up,

http://s425.photobucket.com/albums/pp333/Iron_Nan/Forge%20World%20at%20Salute%202010/

I only asked about Grot tanks, was told mid may to accompany the new book, will be sold as a big set of four. The price hasn't been decided yet but he guesstimated about £50 - 60, the tanks are modular, the set will give you enough bits to build four including the command tank parts.

No pictures of other stuff, sorry tau/sm fans, it was a big show and my mind was starting to frazzel by the time I got to Forge World.

I did video the whole cabinet though, I brought a flash phone so I might as well, lol. Will post it when it finishes uploading.

Video's up, don't expect BBC wildlife documentary quality!
