Eventually... It will become a 'painting log'.

Gavin Thorne wrote:I like the conversions - reminds me of some of my stuff! Never thought of using the old Zoey head for a wraithlord though, that's total win. Love the color-scheme, btw. Let's see some more models with paint on them! I made my own seer council using high elf, dark elf, and guardian bits with a bit of greenstuff.

What's your plan for the necron-wraithguard? What kind of items were you looking for that you couldn't find at the store? Inquiring minds want to know!

The inspiration for the wraithguard comes from this image:

I found it somewhere on warseer I think; if anyone knows the original creator, it would be good to post them/ the source here (so we can see what they did!)
The plan is very similar to the above image: GS over some of the details (ribs, necronness, flesh-out limbs a bit); extend the waist/spine with some PVC; GS some fins (ala the WL) for their backs - the Spiritseers will have these too; maybe chuck on some loin-clothes if they are a bit bland; wraithcannons similar to what they have done.
I still haven't found the right 'heads'. I intended to use "finger-bowling skittles"; the skittles were about 1/2 the length of a plastic WL head, and I was going to file them into a more 'wraithy' shape. This idea was super cheap as well ($4 all up).

Hoping to finish the GS work on the seer council in the next 24 hours
Then we can think about paint (maybe by the end of the week I can have the HQ and HS completed).

That's a great find, very straight-forward conversion and I've got most of the bits to do it justice and I've been holding out for plastics, but we know how that goes.

The heads are the only bit that's hard to duplicate, but you mentioned "finger-bowling skittles" - I've not heard of these before, but I'm an ignorant US citizen can you enilghen us?

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

I'm liking the conversion work. The GS looks good too (so much green stuff). I'll be watching.

Until next time, subscribed!

As in a table-top ten-pin bowling set. You flick the ball with your fingers. I saw them in a toys'r'us; The skittles looked to be just the right size for the WG heads (and roughly the right shape). With a bit of filing down and GS work, I think they could do the trick. Unfortunately I can't find a google pic, or online store.

Working on finishing the seer council now!

I've been wondering what touse for the heads seeing as I'm going to do this conversion for WG as well. i asked the OP and he said he just made resin casts for the heads and the gun tip.

If you can find the thing you're talking about using for the head post a picture of it, I'm intrigued.

Mal, I know exactly what you're talking about now and I agree that they would be just about perfect for WG heads.

I found the poster's original thread on Warseer, his name's Morathi and he's in Poland. Incredible conversion talent and he and I have some very similar ideas it seems. He mentioned that he casts the heads himself, so it may be possible to just ask him for a few - I'm sure that he'd be happy to sell some.

In any case, I've gathered my necron and eldar bits boxes in the attempt to replicate this conversion. I might be casting some of my own WG heads, especially if I can find the same skittles that you're after.

This might work just fine. Pins are 1 & 1/2" long, pretty typical of most toy bowling sets. And here's a set with 1" pins for a smaller head.

Oh i see Gavin has gotten here before me... d'oh!
Yeah I have that Warseer thread favved. It's an awesome blog.
Wierdly enough, I've started my own Necron Wraithguard this week. My GS skills leave a lot to be desired, and I was using the EMShuricannon ammo pack from the WL/WW weapon sprue for a head. It's too small, but it looks WG-esque.

Miniature plastic skittles though? That's a great idea! I was wracking my brain trying to think of something that would fit, hence the Shuricannon thing. That's genius. I'll have to look into that.

This, and so much more is why I LOVE online communities. Big love.

Um, I don't think those bowling pin things are going to work if they're an inch long. That's almost as long as the model itself. Good idea though, just too big.

I modelled a head yesterday out of the back end of an EML and the Shuricannon bit mentioned above and it looks pretty spot on after liberal application of brown stuff. It's about 3/4" long and fits the body pretty nicely. Using the 1" skittle, trim 1/4" off the top of the pin, then saw the pin in half from top to bottom and it's approximately the same shape and size as mine. I think it would work fine. The current WG models have big heads too, ya know?

Mal, this is your plog! Where's that seer council?

I'm going to have to measure one of the WG heads I have, I don't see them being that big. Maybe, and hopefully, I'm wrong. Also Gavin could you pm me a picture of the one you made?

Mal, seer council???

EDIT: Just measured a WG head, it's just under 3/4", a lot bigger than I had previously thought.

UPDATE:

Seer Council

Sorry about the wait;
both the surgery and this have kept me distracted:

After noticing me working on my craftworld, a friend of mine (ex-player) lamented that he had given his IG tank army away many moons ago; so I latched on to paperhammer and have started building some tanks for him; although I can't decide whether to go heavy on LRBT or their alternates (thinking hydras are a steal, and maybe some medusas). Tough to decide in a 1500 list

Here is most of the HQ. The warlocks are done, but I may still add more gems etc. The farseer is still WIP: the intention is to finish him with the spiritseers. I want him to be a spiritseer who has "strayed too far down the path".

Avatar, nothing much to see here. I lost the 'bloody' hand after moving houses twice; so I sculpted a new arm with fist. I am as yet undecided what, if anything, to put in it (missing a thumb at the moment too).

A bit of an awkward pose; the torso makes sense, but the legs don't match it.

slightly sneaky looking

Casting a destructor on you

Mr. boring; I am strongly considering resculpting this guy so both hands are grasping his witch blade above the shoulder.

This is what their backs look like. Pretty standard warlockishness

The whole bunch. I should add that they are pretty tall (taller than a marine atleast). Truescalish.

In terms of converting, that's pretty much the HQ and the HS done. Now all that's left is the troops. I think I have a lead on some bowling pin heads, so I'll trying and track those down this weekend. I have until Sunday night left before I'm off on holiday, and then I have to travel interstate for uni for a week; so it'll be a fortnight off all up. So I intend to get my HQ painted over the next three days, and I'm working 9-5 each one. we will see what happens. I should be able to knock out the basics though (it's only 5 models afterall).

Thanks again for the C+C.

hi everyone; just an update to show this project is still moving along (slowly).

As you can see, I am no GD painter. I'm happy with these as a table top standard though.
There won't be much progress this week; 9 days straight of work and 6000 words due Monday...

I have acquired some WG heads and will update on those later!

ok; just another update to justify the blog!

I have actually done a substantial amount of work in the last few days; notably:

Objective markers are finished. I don't think the lighting is doing them any favours here, but I'm quite happy with how they turned out.
World Spirit anyone?

And as you can see here, I've added 2 X 7 man squads of Hawks. Not everyones' favourite, but I'm hoping there'll be a little bit of synergy between them and the (also unpopular) wraithguard.
Speaking of WG, I know I've been putting them off As of this morning I have acquired ALL of the components (and a few more tubes of GS); I have even put together a test model just to check. Unfortunately though there are few factors making me hold back from diving in and starting them:
1) I have my last research paper for a few week due on Monday, and
2) I want to get the far(spirit)seer and the 2 spiritseers finished before I start the WG.
I'm moving to a new placement at the end of the month, so that is the new deadline. Units left:
1 SH Exarch (needs paint)
1 Farseer (almost assembled/converted)
2 Spiritseers (I have the components)
20 Wraithguard (I have the components)

Eventually I will also add:
2 Vypers (will need to play a few games before I decide on weapon)
2 Ranger / Pathfinder Squads
2 Autarchs (to run with the IG, and to give the SH reliability when yo-yoing).
I don't know when this will be, but hopefully before Summer

That's all for now!

Ok; a quick update.
Unfortunately I seem to have lost my camera charger; I spent about 2 hours yesterday turning over my house in search of it. This of course means that pictures won't be happening until I find another option...

Meanwhile though I have prepped a lot of stuff for painting:
6 X pathfinders with a few head swaps and GS
The final hawk exarch
A vyper
The Farseer is almost complete (needs a bit more GS on the back)
A stand in Yriel (need to finish cloak)
2 X Spiritseers (almost finished)

My aim is to get these completed and the first few coats done over the next 10 days.

Once all that is done, I will only have the 20 Wraithguard left to do;
I have decided I will do an in depth log on the progress of these so that we can hopefully turn it into a tutorial / article.

Hi all,

I've finally got some time off.
Today was my first day off in a few months without any work hanging over my head to complete, so I rummaged around and pulled out the warriors I'd started on; switched on the first test; and had a relaxing afternoon.
I've gone through and done a step by step of the production process (so I can make a tutorial when I'm finished).
Here is a work in progress shot:

20 wraithguard armatures. Expect updates over the next few days.

Nice to see someone convert the hell out of everything!!

If i may be so bold though and offer a word of advice. Your basic GS skills seem quite good but i notice there are alot of un-smooth and fingerprinted surfaces. I'm not sure what tools you are using but you should really lubricate them... you'll find you can get a much smoother surface.

Recently i've been using cooking oil... i keep a small jar of it near by and dab a touch on my left hand thumb-meat (i hold my tool in my right)... whenever i need lube i just wipe the tip of my tool on said patch of thumb-meat. It should only be a thin coat on the tool.

I really recomend it.

haha! I'll take all this as a compliment as it has been my first serious attempt at "GS-ing".
I do use vaseline (petroleum jelly), but I do get lazy when I'm mass producing (such as the bases): hence the finger-prints.

On a side note, it was a nice surprise to find Australia had won the first test when I got home from work...

And just because I don't think I have shown it yet; here is the WIP farseer (spiritseer).
