It's not exactly new. For the UK and elsewhere perhaps, but GWUS has always had speedy turn around on orders. I've had things from the US arrive here, in Oz, in less than 36 hours from ordering. GWUS are lightning fast.

no price increase for me. Either they are slow or they took pity on us.
It's just taking them a while to do all the updates to the pricing. I checked the US GW website last night and many of the prices were still unchanged, for example, the Land Raider, but today the higher price is showing. The same for Space Marine Tactical Squads, last night they were still $35 US, today they are $37.25.
It may take a few days, but eventually the websites will reflect all the planned price increases in each respective country.

Why do they have to increase their prices every year? It makes no sense there is no way that their costs increas that much. Even if they do include free shipping now they still have a ridiculus margin. 37.50$ for a box of space marines. Its 10 plastis figures. You can get a bag of 100 green plastic army men for 5$ it's like come on. OBviosly the GW stuff has more detail but it's a set price the more they make the cheaper it is for them to make it. It's not like they have to pay for a mold for every sprue they use the same one over and over again. Sorry for the rant but their darn price increases are one of the reasons that I stopped playing for so long.

I'm a 42 year old who collects GW stuff and the father of a 12 year old who also likes GW stuff. I can't tell you how many upper middle class parents I know (and I'm friends with) who look at GW product exactly as " 100 green plastic army men." To them, especially the mothers I've asked, there is no difference. A buddy of mine who has no interest in my hobby whatsoever pointed that very comparison out to me. Also, I've been told by more than one mom that they'd much rather thier kid have a video game instead of a box of PLASTIC TOY SOLIDERS at the same price or more. Again, to them, no difference. This is another example of GW being so lost in the US market it's beyond shocking into saddness. They can't rely on Mommy buying little Timmy expensive plastic to make him happy. That doesn't work in the US.
Back On Topic, free shipping is a good move for GW. I don't buy "direct only" stuff from GW though, I can live without most of what they offer that way.

So because people are stupid and make weird generalizations GW should price their stuff the same as single pose, horribly detailed things that are sold in my grocery store's toy aisle?
Yeah. I don't buy it.
Go and price GW's stuff compared to multi-part plastic/resin figure kits. Their prices aren't that out there.
For example?

That's two figures and a horse, and the $29 price is on sale.

It's neither stupid nor weird.
Ignorant and thoughtless are more like it.
However, you're right you don't have to buy it. GW doesn't either, and it's costing them quite a bit now and will cost them more in the future unless they understand how to market the value of their product properly. To keep mildly on topic, free shipping isn't a sign they understand.
In case it wasn't clear, I was referring to the "core market" as GW sees itself selling to. Not to people who are older and a bit more savvy about what's around out there. To put it another way the disconnect between the target market's "money handlers" and the company is quite broad.

So let me see if I have this straight.
I hit you in the face with a brick, (price increase) and then give you a cookie (free S&H) to fix your teeth?
Most places on the Net offer free S&H after some imaginary dollar limit is reached, or just charge a small, flat rate no matter the size of the order.
Also, the deal with shipping the same day if you order before 1pm..... MANY THOUSANDS of places have cutoff times for ordering stuff and getting shipped the same day. That's nothing impressive.

Talk about a whiny bunch of people. GW doesn't even have to give free shipping but they are and all people can do is complain and say "well, online retailers give 20% off which works out cheaper on large orders" or "so and so offers free shipping all the time" or "everyone else has a cutoff date to guarantee same day shipping".
To use a further analogy I hit you in the face with a brick and then tell you to go feth yourself. Now which is better? To be given a cookie or to be told to go feth yourself? If it's the latter than either you hate cookies or you are beyond help.
Throw GW a bone here. Even if GW lowered prices 30% tomorrow the Maelstrom and Wayland fanbois would STILL not buy direct from GW because those retailers would probably drop their price even further (basically a cut of 50%). So either way, people will always buy from FLGS if they can, regardless of how much GW lowers prices. Sure we all benefit from lower prices but attacking GW for giving you something free is like complaining about winning $200M in the lottery because Uncle Sam automatically takes $70M of that.
I'm sure I'll be flamed as being a fanboi...again but it's the reality of it. Unless GW stops selling product outside it's own stores they'll never compete with the FLGS so compared to the FLGS they will always look like evil money-grubbers.

Is anything said there untrue? No?
They set themselves up in a poor model and people like you and Kan will defend their stupidity until the end. So be it.
You do realize that it's GW's own fault for all their assinine behavior in the corporate world? Once upon a time, they were doing it right, they waved bye-bye to that idea though. If you choose to eat the crap they toss on your table, have at it. Most of us won't. None of their actions would be seen as needed, by GW, if they would have continued their original model.
This part is key ----> Pay attention ----> Don't come in here waving the flag of support for GW using selling points that other places have had set up for ages, and then get hurt because someone points it out. Why laud them for doing something that is passed it's time as something innovative for online retailers?
GW isn't inventing the wheel here, they just found out it goes on the cart years after everyone else. Their lag in the business world is costing their customers money. With, or without "Free Shipping".
I'll propose this to you then; Maybe you're just so used to being crapped on by GW, that anytime they do 1 minor thing seen as a positive, you eat it up like was the LAST cookie.

What in the hell are you ranting about, malcontent?
Warstore, arguably the fastest shipping turnaround I've ever seen, takes 1-3 days minimum to process and ship an order. Sometimes longer if it's a bitz order. And that's making the order beforethe cutoff time for shipping.
To top it off, you pay S&H on pretty much everything from there.
Buying the parts for a single (plastic) Terminator so I could go about making my Chapter-Master ended up costing $5.62 in standard shipping.
Standard shipping, mind you, being getting a baggy packed into a mailing envelope and sent via snail mail and the USPS.
Buying an Ezekiel model cost $17 from GW.
$17 flat, with no sales tax charge and no S&H.

Awww, now I know you aren't starting the name calling already.
Also, if the Warstore is the fastest around that you've seen, you haven't seen much. I ordered from Nobleknight just last week and it went out that day.
Almost no place charges sales tax, moot point.
You seem to be quite confused about the overall arc of the conversation. Maybe you should go back and read, not scan for content.

What can GW do other than lower prices? My point is even if GW dropped prices by 30% people would piss in their (GW's) cornflakes because prices didn't drop 35%.
Not very many online places can guarantee same day shipping. My experience with Warstore is 3 days from day of order placed to arrival at my door.
Free shipping from GW is good for some things. If I need to buy a single pot of a Foundation paint I can't get it at my local store cheaper so if I'm in no hurry it's nice not paying $7 shipping for a $4 jar of paint. So I pay $3.70 for a jar of Macharite Red, whereas before all the free shipping I'd pay like $11 for a single jar of Macharite Red.
Bitz take a little longer to ship as they are cut to order and I'm sure only a few guys are being paid to cut bitz all day. Free shipping is a step in the right direction. Not much else GW can do because as long as FLGS are willing to sell at a discount (mine doesn't, I pay GW prices though without shipping) people will still bitch how GW is fething them over and they will keep ordering from FLGS.
Only way GW can get it's customers back from buying from brick and mortar NON-GW stores is to stop selling product to independents, thereby forcing people to buy direct or go down to an "official" brick and mortar GW store.
Not to mention not everyone who plays 40k has a store nearby or knows about buying online. Up until 2 years ago I had no idea about stores like The WarStore or Wayland or Maelstrom. I either had to drive 3 hours one way to save 20% on something (not economical if the money you save goes into your gas tank) or order direct from GW. From 1995 to 2008 GW got a LOT of money from me.
Enough people order direct from GW that for those people who can't buy brick and mortar or don't trust independant retailers the free shipping is a godsend.

Just noticed the prices went up in Marines Heavy Support recently. I just asked my FLGS how much Predators cost last week and he looked it up online and told me 41.25, they're up to $44 now. Land Raider's up to 62.
Thank god I found an ebay seller who sells new, in box stuff at low prices. Got me a pair of Preds for $30 each! Gonna Be shipping cost of some approaching ten bucks... but even so, that's $10 less than what GW wants.
How do these discount retailers make their money?

It is a generalisation. It makes an assumption of a group of people with nothing to back it up other than Fate's usual brand of self-righteous indignation that he directs at anyone who isn't suckling at GW's teet 24/7. And of course it's hasty - Fate's the one who said it. But seriously, even getting past your own ' Jump to defend every thing GW does at the drop of a hat even when it's off topic' Kan, you have to look at this through a filter. You've always got to take what's posted on the internet and filter out the 'Internet Hyperbole'. So, using your Ultramarine example, when I see someone (and I have seen someone) write " That was the worst trailer I've ever seen", you have to filter it into something more reasonable like " I didn't like it". In this case - the shipping - we have an offer that isn't exactly inspiring. They ship on the same day? Wow. Welcome to 21st Century shipping standards. It's free? Gee... that's not exactly new. I'm not going to complain or put up some sort of hyperbolic " How dare they offer free shipping? They should send me free models!!!!1" shtick, but please, I'm going to call it for what it is - a big ' meh'. It's a minor offer from a company that is struggling to make themselves look good at anything, especially when it comes to the internet (banning internet sales, suing fan sites, and putting up prices isn't helping, and a little bit of free shipping won't change that), and there are better offers out there. Why should we not talk about the better offers? It only gets worse when you have folks like Ol' Fateweaver who would go so far as to make us believe that this new offer is something that we should be thankful for and, worse, that we're bad people for not accepting this gracious offer and continuing to order elsewhere. Or that somehow looking for a discount is 'wrong'.
