What else is allowed? Coke cans as drop pods maybe?!
We had several players at our location with some poor scratch build conversions as well. I could care less as long as the guns/turrets/deffrollas/bases are the appropriate size and proportions. Dash himself had some scratch built deffrollas. I've given plenty of money to GW over the years, so if someone doesn't want to shell out big bucks for Hydra turrets I'm fine with that. I try to make my stuff as nice as I can in the event I go to a tourney with appearance scores, but to each his own.
Table wise however, I would have been pretty disappointed in what I saw in your photos. I call or email the TO ahead of any event that matters to me and ask if they are following the 25% terrain guideline, and if not, can I bring some of my own to help out. If I know the terrain is stingy I plan accordingly.

I don't know the full story because I left early, but I've been PMed about peoples' games getting canceled an hour early with a "finish up this turn, we're only giving an hour and a half" because of scheduling conflicts with the semi-finals and another event. I got some seriously angry mails from folks who got denied a win or a game conclusion because they didn't get to finish their game.
I had fun though and none of it affected me. The only thing I wish was different was that my last opponent had a typed copy of his list. How do you show up to semi-finals and only bring a single copy of your list that you penned together? Curtis, if you read this - not sure that will fly at semi-finals; borrow army builder or use notepad or excel.

I'll be playing 40k, but not writing about it, making batreps, posting on Dakka much, or having an internet presence anywhere really - there's simply not much gained for doing so and the cost is more than I'm willing to pay. If I were all-powerful, I would cleanse genepool of some filth, but I'm not, and also not willing to tolerate the filth. Bad guys win?
There's one battle report left in me for a game I'm not sure I'll even be playing.....if Stelek and I get paired up at the Nova Open either in the tournament or at the Friday Night Celebrity Death Match, it will get a battle report. Other than that, goodnight, good luck, and its time for me to chill and step out of the limelight.
Screw that Dash. Orks don't go for pansy-ass emo crybaby whining. Don't let the haters win. Some people like watching da pink boyz krump all over da place.
Post your reports, win-or-lose. Have a good time with it. Don't do it because you think other people need to learn to play, do it because it's fun, and all sorts of people who don't need to learn to play enjoy what you're putting out there. Remember, the vocal ones are a tiny minority, the people who read this stuff and like it are generally not going to say anything, but they are there and they do enjoy it.

That's not a scratch built model, that is a folded piece of paper with 4 drinking straws glued to it! I don't mind if the model is not from GW there are perfectly acceptable ways to model a hydra turret that don't use any GW parts whatsoever.
By your standards people could show up using cardboard boxes as rhinos as long as they had the right dimensions and use empty bases with nothing but some pieces of paper on them to represent space marines... I'm sorry but that shouldn't be acceptable in any tournament, much less one of this calibre...

Sad to hear you won't be writing these anymore Dash. For as few games as I've played, I feel it's people like you who put the time and effort into putting their experiences on the web that have made my armies as good quality as they've played, and dramatically increased my understanding of 40k.
For every troll out there, there's 10 people who read your stuff and don't say anything at all. Don't let it bug you too much.
And to add my 2 cents to the mix... the low quality, and lack of terrain really threw me off for such a big event. I've seen much smaller events with awesome terrain... you'd figure the organizers would be able to round up some better stuff at least for the top tables. Also, the straw autocannons? Lame, but he might have had an excuse, like that he accidentally broke the gun during transit but still had the body intact... Whatever the case, the rest of his army was VERY well painted, and I'd have let him go as he obviously put some effort into it.
Get some better army lists though.
And Dash? Keep on playin' Hoo-rah. Hopefully I'll get a chance to play you sometime.

Straws are NOT WYSIWYG, and they weren't even on the right chassis. Let me say that in another way too: A Leman Russ with straws and a bottle top is NOT a Hydra. He should not have been allowed to field that crap, and you would have been within your rights to make him take them off the table. This is the semi-finals, and there are plenty of ways to get auto-cannons.
Either field the models correctly or don't field them at all. If he would have spent the time to make them at least look like he spent more than 30 seconds stealing stuff from the venue you were in, it wouldn't have been so bad. But that was just shameful. I would be embarrassed to have my name and picture associated with that.
I think the rest of the guy's army looked nice enough that the straws were excusable.

I worked pretty hard to get my stuff WYSIWYG - mostly by scratch building. I think its lousy to bring really ugly stuff to a game - really, what does 40K have going for it over a computer game, beyond the modeling? The visual is what really makes it worth doing. I feel bad about bringing unpainted models myself, let alone straws taped to paper... The rest of that army looks great though.

You are mistaken as to my standards, PhantomViper. GW says the models have to be at least 50% GW, and all the vehicles in the photos I saw, including the photo you pasted, are clearly GW except for the turret and weapons. As far as I can tell the barrels on the cannon are not 12" or 14" long, the model height has not been jacked up for advantage, so I'm fine with it. If someone brings a model that is altered for advantage, or I'm not clear what it is, I'll get the TO to do something. I knew that was a Hydra in the photo as soon as I saw it, so lets play.
Ard Boys is GW's strategy to get players to go out and buy several hundred more dollars worth of models. They don't ask for painted, because they want people to buy more and assemble only, then buy more, more, more. If they don't want painted, then why buy more if I can build a hydra turret and plop it on a chimera? If that same player wants to go to a more traditional tournament with appearance scores and such he'll have to do a better job if he wants max points.
I worry a lot more about the opponent who has a completely finished and extra fancy 2500 point army when I walk up to the table. I'm happy to see somebody with home built conversions, as that represents to me that said opponent is inexperienced with the models/army, uncommitted or rushed to get it to the table, and willing to take shortcuts to achieve his goals. That tells me that planning ahead, being thorough, play testing, and studying all the army books will give me the advantage. It did this time. I have to pick what 2500 point army I would like from GW...

I'm guessing that there was a lot of banning after the drama in thread one and two. This relative quiet and topical posting is kind of nice.
As for the straws: Curtis's army was VERY well painted. Except for a couple of straws. I'm not going to fault someone for not having finished it. =p I got wtfpwned, and he didn't need his straw hydras to do it so I have no complaints!
Nurglitch - lay off. There's nothing wrong with my army, and crap like "With the state of Dash's paint jobs, he needs to excuse the straws" is not needed. You don't need to like the paint job. Its painted well, if in non-traditional colors, everything is based, and its colorful and themed. You know what? My wife plays 40k. Its her army. So pbbbbt.

Paint jobs are in the eye of the beholder Nurglitch. Adding the caveat that it's just your opinion doesn't mean it's ok to insult someones work. If this was a painting thread then sure. He'd be asking for feedback. But since he's not, it's not something to bring up. They are painted to the basic standard to enter tournaments which is all that matters.

Hulksmash:
My discussion of DashofPepper's horrendous paint job started when another poster got holier-than-thou about DashofPepper's opponent's fantastically painted tanks including some crude proxies using straws. I was surprised that anyone could be offended by such proxies considering how ugly and poorly painted DashofPepper's Orks are.
But as he said, and I reiterated, I don't need to like his paint job. I don't get why he would get so defensive when he's obviously aware that his painting won't appeal to everyone, and when the comment about it is defending his opponent's wonderfully painted army from being slurred.
Previously I'd tried to drum up some brainstorming about how DashofPepper might have pulled a win out of that Kobayashi Maru. But it seemed like people were too busy trying to be outraged at his opponent having the temerity to use straws to proxy Hydra Flak Tanks. DashofPepper could have replied to the people that took me up on my suggestion, but it seems to me that he's more concerned with defending his paint job than addressing specific strategic and tactical issues presented in the game.
I mean, if I had been as self-aggrandizing a tactical genius as DashofPepper then I too might want to distract people from how I lost, as opposed to owning up to what happens when my opponent's lack of incompetence means I don't win.

@Dash
I think its super lame and "soft" of you to let trolls on the internet get you down. I would REALLY hate to see you quit writing these great batreps, and from the responce here on dakka...it seems to me despite what any douchebags say about/to you on other sites that is unsavory...the content here will take a serious hit if you stop. That is a VERY bad thing.
If you ENJOY doing what you're doing here, you should TOTALLY keep it up. You should shrug your shoulders and ignore the flak.
Your problem is that you're fighting an internet troll war that is unwinnable. You're good enough with your orks, but your tactics online are terrible. You dont have to defend yourself from every idiot out there that doesnt even GO to tournaments, ones that dont win the games, or ones that are simply unknown outside of forum/blogsites. That battle is UNWINNABLE. Should you really be fighting it? DONT FEED THE TROLLS...its playing THEIR game!
OR, should you simply add more of the content online that people love to read? THIS is the reason I stuck up for you so hard on our WC website when the mods themselves there seemed to be being unfair to you. The guy that runs our boards wants more content...so I tried to make way for you to come in and add some.
You add quality content to dakka. Something REAL to read rather than another religious debate or another "what army should I choose" thread that noone cares about. Ignore the low insults of trolls telling you your paintjob sucks, your tactics/army sucks, or trolls that call you out on their blogs. You dont have to go there and give them traffic...and you shouldnt.
You should be playing the silent war. Post your batreps, give advice and have fun with the forums. Thats why they're here, and you've helped and entertained people with your content. Don't even bother with other forum sites. I swear, everytime one is mentioned (even Stelek's) someone is always saying "I've never heard of that site...whats that?" Dakka everyone knows...you're becoming a personality here. A cocky one perhaps, but you've given plenty to the community. Learn from your experience and keep going, maybe ease off on the cockyness and/or arrogance to get more of the responce that you can stomach to read...and ignore the haterz.
Dont quit...its soft, its weak, and you let them win.
Dont quit unless you simply dont get enjoyment out of discussing your 40k experiences online. From what you've posted...I highly doubt this is the case. You're letting the trolls get to you....Don't. You're doing yourself a disservice AND Dakka. This site needs good content...thats something you've been trying to provide.
Change your tactics...dont attempt to fight an unwinnable troll war across 50 40k sites. Restrict yourself to one or two to post at religiously...and dont get involved in personal flamewars. It's not worth your blood pressure.
I hope this helps, and I hope you reconsider.
Watch....."QFT" 's are incomming....I'm not alone in thinking this.

Deadshane: QFT. ha! besides, as has already been mentioned, a lot of the trash has been taken out through suspensions or what-not. The haters may be louder, but I truly doubt they're the majority, I think...

Up to you...
Alright, Nurglitch, we know your opinions on his models, though did you enjoy the battle reports?

So I am no longer one the unheard masses. This is my first post (I have been lurking and lurking for some time) and have created an account solely to support you, Mr. OfPepper.
Unfortunately I have never had the opportunity to meet you, let alone stand (or wobble, dependent upon Mr. Morgan's involvement) across the table from you, as I was not able to make the SVDM and lack the funds to travel about. But I have so very much enjoyed your battle reports.
So I hope you will change your mind about stepping out of the limelight--I feel you have much to offer. Yet I understand if your remain steadfast in your decision. And hopefully, one day, I will find myself setting up across the table from you.
PS The same store that held the SVDM is holding a 1500 pt GT in July, though that is likely too far now that you are moving to Florida.

Should I have an interweb record? No...no--it would be too shameful. |
