Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do |

See those buckles on your coat? Could do something with those. Play it up, rather than just leaving it at "I'd use these to close my coat if it was colder".
Maybe even take belts and attach them to the buckles, crisscrossing over your front, taking attention away from whatever 'normal' shirt you end up wearing.

Masked One
This link is a website for making your own Stormtrooper costume. While I know that you are making a 40k one, it still has very good tips.
As the owner of a Stormtrooper costume and a general annoyer of "the normals" at GenCon each year, I have a few suggestions that I hope will help.
1. Don't show skin. Are you a 24 year old chick with a firm belly, nice skin, and/or great cleavage? No? Then cover it up. Nothing kills a full body costumed faster than your hairy neck/back/legs peaking through when they shouldn't. Wear something dark to cover your neck. Most stormtroopers are wearing spandex under their gear. Yes, I said it. The truth is out. Also, a black neck piece that you can get at a scuba diver store. Mine cost $15.
2. Don't allow any clothing to show that shouldn't. In some of your pics, you look half-assed. The red shirt in that one picture completely makes you just look like a bank robber that grabbed any old Halloween mask and mid 1990s over-coat that the cool kids wore. If that red shirt is supposed to show, well, it doesn't work. Buttoning up that pirate coat would be 100% better.
3. Details, details, details. The gas mask is a great start. You need something to go over that pirate coat. The red sash that on the Kamaazar posted below your pictures would be a nice addition. As would a purity seal on your spear-thingy. The hand/gloves look is OK, but the duct tape is distracting. Is there any way you can get your hands on a pair of cheap but large, black, leather (or cloth) gloves that you could cut out the fingers and most of the back of the hand? You can keep the duct tape, but having just a little peak out from under the gloves, along with the wires on your fingers, would look sharper.
That's all I got. Post pictures and stuff. Good luck!

I think I may need to drag my end of the world custom stuff out and do some photos!
Do you have access to swapmeets and the like? Also are you good with hardware? You could improve the gloves by going to the electrical section of a hardware store and picking up some cheapy bits too. @Kronk posted a good link, as I suggested the body-glove, I think that site has places to get them Also you could use/modify some of the heat shaping plastic stuff to make your leg armor too.

I despise that image. She's a talented designer, but gets dissed for not being Olivia Munn. I guess geeks only appreciate pics of girls that like 40k if they can spank to 'em.

(and for obvious reasons I won't link to the Cosplay Daemonettes from Spain )

the first one (The SOB) is a great costume, If I remember correctly it is her boyfriend pushing her to wear it so that makes it his fetish and his threads about it seemed sort of creepy...
As for the Despoiler pic. It s a decent costume. So because she isn't anorexic and doesn't choose the stereotypical "jailbait/attention starved" costumes most female cosplayers wear she is somehow bad or can't like 40K? Most of the dudes I meet who play 40K are fat nerds. Glass houses...
I'm still waiting for someone to do a decent ork costume...

Just making the comment that not everyone likes the same thing, someone above generalized, though I would chime in on where I stand comparatively. As someone how has designed, built and photographed props, costumes and sets, I have a very very judgmental about looks of "models" on a micro scale. A lot of the "ZOMGZ HAWT!!!" Models look that way because some photographer was good at make-up and Photoshop skills, not cause the chick is hot.
As for a costume POV the Chaos Chick above hit the nail on the head, and it looks awesome, even if she isn't "ZOMG HAWT!" and she probably has more brains than every hot bottle blonde Model I have ever worked with does. The SOB costume is again Awesome, and the woman has a great body for it, however I have worked with her type before on a professional level. A woman that copies and wears a Bro-Ho hairstyle, is a Bro-Ho and will let you know exactly what she thinks about "EVERYTHING" a little to loud.
I think the silliness of the chops gives them appeal..

Your generalizing blondes, and girls with "Bro-Ho" hairstyle in a negative way, what are you trying to prove? You're saying because some blondes are dumb the others are as well? Those with "Bro-Ho" Hairstyles is a dumbass and generally annoying?
Yeah, ok.
----------------
Heh, I just thought they stood out in a silly way. The rest of the costume is very well built and maintained, and is generally serious, and then you see his face with animal furred bootstraps for something on his face.

I actually generalized about people that use BLEACH on their HEAD to change the color of their HAIR; people that seem to think that smelling large doses of a proven HARMFUL FUMES in small one bedroom apartment bathroom, with no ventilation is a GOOD IDEA. I never said anything about natural blondes. I also said MODELS, and some are smart. These are the models that spend about as much time behind a camera as in front of one, so I consider them Photographers, not Dumb Models.
You generalized all that, to blondes as a whole for me. You also seemed to miss the fact that I was speaking from my experience, not for the world as a whole. Two-toned hair in Southern California, marks you as a type of person, it is a way of identifying with the Desert Rat crowd... for feth sake these people are proud to call themselves BRO-HOS. It would be like me, I have a mohawk, getting offended if someone called me a Punk, when I have a mohawk because I am an old school punk and identify myself as such.
Unless you are a woman that uses bleach to dye your hair, two-tones, in Southern California that is not a fan of going to the desert, and has a huge amount of ambition to become a doctor or Lawyer, or any other profession that requires a NORMAL hair color, I suggest you not get so defensive about what I said about a very small SUB-SECTION of the Southern Californian population I have personally had NEGATIVE first hand EXPERIENCES with.
Automatically Appended Next Post: And as an aside, now that you mention it they would look way better if they were his hair and not a make-up prop...

If you wear a robe, consider carefully placed 'random' tears that show off bits of electronics beneath.
Does the character type you're playing (I'm not familiar enough with the filthy, deluded Imperium to pin down an exact costume translation, but I think I get the idea) use a familiar sort of thing? You could get a fake crow or something similar, give it a mechanical lens eye, bits of metal in its wings, things like that...
